Thank you for the question. It is an interesting question, in that there are often as many interpretations of parts of the Bible as there are versions of the Bible itself! Personally, I have tried to study as many translations of the Bible as possible. I would be hard pressed to think of any truly monumental disagreements between the two volumes we are discussing. That is, after two people were to have the ability to discuss a particular issue.

Having said that, there are those who would take bible passages to attempt to dismiss The Book of Mormon. I think there is plenty of room for discussion, and many of the subjects might be more related to the person’s particular denominational frame of reference than to the Bible itself.

The Book of Mormon itself states that its purpose is “… the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations.” Latter-day Saints don’t use scripture as the sole source of God’s instructions to mankind. They feel the same way about the Bible.

Sometimes I feel like some folks are prone to worship a book more than their God. I find that particularly common among protestant evangelicals. But that is another discussion! I fear that I may have gone off on a tangent. Please let me know if I have adequately addressed your question.
okay now as you know we are taught not to interpret the bible. We are taught to keep with the teachings of the Church and you must have the power of the Holy Spirit to define scripture. Now do you agree with that. Also LDS don’t use scripture alone, Now being a Catholic I can relate to that. But who do you follow. As for RCC we follow the teachings of the RCC Oral and written scripture. I guess what I am asking who guides you in your faith. Like in my faith it is the Church. We believe that the RCC is the Living Christ. The Church is led by the succession of the Apostles.

Catholics are taught that? I don’t remember, but then it’s been 20 years. How does one get the “power of the Holy Spirit”? Just curious.

One major discrepancy between the teachings of Smith and the Bible (any version, even KJV) I’ve noticed, as well as others posting on here time and again, is that Jesus said marrying another while the first spouse still lives is adultery. This is pretty major, wouldn’t you say? Sure Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had more than one wife, this was considered necessary at the time, and man is apparently excused in his innocence in the matter as it was accepted culture at the time. But the OT is the supposed justification in the D&C, when Christ clearly stated otherwise in the NT. Again, why does that supersede what Jesus Christ said if you are truly Christian? Tell me where the BOM and associated doctrine gives another justification WHY plural marriage is acceptable for the New World and not the Old?

No offense but that is what I think I would need is a ward if I turned my back on the RCC. But that’s okay they will be back. They always come home to the RCC.
Fantasize all you like. Click your heels three times…

Thank you for your reply. I believe my statement will be in line with most LDS Christians. The Book of Mormon is another testimony of Jesus Christ, presented in a history of a group of people who removed from Jerusalem and settled somewhere in the Americas at about 600 BC. Within the volume, the appearance of Jesus Christ to this group is documented. As Christ taught his gospel to those in the “Old world”, so he taught it to those in the “New world.”

LDS Christians believe that The Book of Mormon contains “The fullness of the Gospel”, in that the teachings of Jesus Christ necessary for salvation are presented. The book does not take the place of The Holy Bible, but is considered to be an inspired companion to it.

There has been a great deal of scholarly research dealing with the structure and authenticity of The Book of Mormon. The book is replete with examples of the poetry and literary usage of the ancient civilizations spoken of within. Joseph Smith testified that the book was delivered to him by an angel of God, and that he was given the necessary tools and inspiration to translate from the ancient metal plates which contained it.

In my case, and in the lives of millions of others, The Book of Mormon has been a means of helping me live a life closer to Jesus Christ, and to better understand His will for His children.

Thank you again for your response. I would be pleased to discuss The Book of Mormon or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints further with anyone who is interested.
Welcome. I also am LDS and I should tell you that many many here are ex-mormons and quite anti. No one here has genuine questions so just know that the purpose of any question is not as it seems. Welcome and have fun!

When is a question not “genuine”? When you don’t have an answer for it? I asked a question and it was ignored, yet again. “No one” is a generalization. I’m not an “ex-mormon”, but I do question the validity of the BOM. I have questions about the Catholic Church too, but I almost always get a straight, logical answer from them. If you need to have your feelings about your church validated, then get on an LDS forum.

One gets the Power of the Holy Spirt as the bible says. It is passed on the same way Jesus Christ himself passed it on. Jesus gave this Power to the Apostles when he said what my Father gave me I have now given to you. It has been passed on over history. It is by the laying of hands the same way Jesus taught us. It is called Holy Orders today but it is the same as before. Nothing has changed in the faith. We do not have the power to change anything. We just have the faith and trust in our Lord Jesus Christ to do as we are told and stay truth to the Church. And that faith is called the Grace of God. No one can take it from us or shake us. At least not me. I believe what Jesus said when he said to Peter you have the keys to the kingdom, I do not take that lightly or make a mockery out of it.

Jesus also promised Peter that the church would stand and we’re still here. 🙂

I have answers for questions you have not even thought up yet. I have been doing this for 30 years. If I ignore you it is because I don’t feel like answering you.

Also I really Don’t see where God actually justified plural marriages. Yes they were the culture in those days but if you also read Jesus said God was very disapointed with the People in the ot. Also wives like many words in the OT had many meanings. But I will not try to explain why or what was exactly right in the ot because I really don’t understand it myself. But you yourself said the key word. Jesus made it plain in the NT not to do it. And that is the point. Not dwell on sins of before, God sent Jesus to open our eyes so there is no question. But the point of the matter is what is a sin. If you are doing something and do not know you are sinning against God thats one thing. Not that it is right, but once you are corrected and know it is a sin, whats the excuse now. You admitted it is a sin in the NT. That in itself should be enough. What are you going to say to God, Well everyone else was doing it. It never worked for me when I was a kid with my Parents, and I am sure it is not going to work with God either. Because we will get the same answer IMO you know better. But God sent Jesus for many reasons to take away death, and to make it clear to us what is right and what is wrong. Remember what Jesus said, when he was forced to say divorce is right, He said no, it was wrong then it is wrong now. Another wards people would not except his teachings but that did not make the right. He said NO. This time he made it quite clear. But people still turn it around and say its okay. Bottom line you either live Gods way the whole way or you don’t. You can not pick and choose. Oh of course you can, I can go to any Church I want and follow what they say, but if it isn’t Gods way what good does it do me. Hey I can even start my own. Its done every day. But is that going to get you or I into heaven I think not. The RCC is hard, impossible really, but that is why we have confession, and Priests to help us turn away from our sin. Jesus knew it would be hard, but he also did all he could do to make it as easy on us as possible. To not know the truth is one thing, but to know the fullness of the truth and then turn away from it is not a good thing. The Pope said that if you do that your soul is in grave danger.

There seems to be another change from what mormons told me when I was in school.
There is increasing evidence that there were indigenous peoples in the Americas from a very early time.
I don’t know if this is a change or not. When Mormons told me that Jews came to America in boats, we had already been taught in school that the American Indians migrated from Asia. So I never questioned whether they believed the Jews were the first people here or not.
I’m sure that you know that the migrating party was not Jewish but rather from the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim - which were carried away by the Assyrians and so their genetic make-up does not currently contribute much to today’s Middle Eastern genetic make-up.
Lehi, the foremost patriarch in the Book of Mormon narrative, apparently descended from the tribe of Joseph through Manasseh. Therefore, Lehi was not Jewish. Lehi’s sons married into a family of the tribe of Ephraim. There was a good deal of intermarriage in early mid-eastern society. There were several migrations to the Americas discussed in The Book of Mormon. It would be difficult to say that all Book of Mormon people were of one particular lineage.
The idea that the people that came here in boats are no longer Jewish seems to be a new idea. We know from history that there were in 12/13 tribes of Israel in about 750BC. Thirty years later 10 tribes were carried away. Mormons tell me, 120 years after they are carried away, some of them land in America. Given peoples inclination to marry people like themselves, logic would tell us that biologically they would still be Jewish to some degree. Culturally they may have changed but biologically not so much. I assume that is why Mormons use to believe the people that arrived in America were Jewish.

Why do Mormons believe in the practice of baptizing the dead? Our Lord said things like, let the dead bury their dead but you come and follow me (He who is the way the truth and the life)…

Now if our bodies were formed from dust (and into dust they will return) and our souls are seperated from our bodies at the time of death, why would baptism after death make sense to anyone?

Secondly, Our Lord tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like good seed sown, some on rocky ground, some in thorns and some on good soil…

If the good seed of the Gospel, God’s chosen people, golden plates et al. existed in the America’s for hundreds (or thousands?) of years before the pilgrims came why weren’t the Americas found by the pilgrims to be following Christ?

Did the seed find no good ground (souls) in all of the inhabitants of the Americas? Is it the Mormon view that the Gospel of Our Lord in the Americas was (perish the thought) a dead letter?

You know what I have learned from this site is that Mormons never really answer anything about their faith. You can never get a straight answer, I don’t know what to believe about them or what not to believe. Are they really that confused, full of secrets or what? And not one has the same belief as another. That in itself would be a problem for me.

I have answers for questions you have not even thought up yet. I have been doing this for 30 years. If I ignore you it is because I don’t feel like answering you.
Another standard question-dodging technique. Laughable! You’ve been dodging questions for 30 years, so yeah, I guess you’re pretty good at that. LOL!! :rotfl:
I guess if you want to weed out the weak-minded for the Catholic Church, go right ahead, I won’t stand in your way! That’s all you’re going to get with your type of arguments.
May God bless those who are sucked in by LDS lies.

Was I misunderstood? I wanted to have my question answered by a Mormon. Not that I mind your (name removed by moderator)ut, but it seems like you think I don’t agree on the supreme word of Jesus Christ over flimsy justifications in the BOM. That’s my point, I wanted to know how these guys think they can get off asserting their testament is a true testament of Jesus Christ, because I see huge differences between the two that are really fundamental, not just minor interpretation issues. This doesn’t even seem like the same JC their own copy of the Holy Bible NT they carry around is about. I keep seeing my question or similar come up by others, and it always gets dodged or sidelined. I ask missionaries to their face and they blush and walk away basically. (Gets me on my way sooner when I’ve errands to run and they just won’t get out of my face.) I think the CC is not without flaw, but is most definitely the closest thing we have to the truth in God.

Hi Seek,

There’s a reason that “This doesn’t even seem like the same JC” ~ it’s because their “other testament of Jesus Christ” is about a DIFFERENT Jesus Christ than the one we know. 🙂

I don’t think so. If you’ve been doing it for 30 years, there must be something about it you like. In my experience on these boards, when someone advocating or defending a position ignores a question it’s because he as no answer. It puzzles me how people like you can hold to a position when you can’t answer fundamental questions about what you believe. It’s kin to lying to yourself.

If you left the Catholic Church for Mormonism, how smart can you be?

Brothers and Sisters let us not take the Grace of Our Lord for granted for we should know that none come to Jesus Christ unless the Father draw them. If someone leaves the Catholic Church we are endebted to pray for them for Our Heavenly Father wills none of his sheep to be lost.

God may have great things in store for his Church through mfburkowski (the angles of God rejoice at the return of one lost sheep). Mfburkowski, I hope you return to the one sheepfold and more perfectly to the one Shepherd.

You get the first price, k0nod541, for dodging questions while pretending that you’re answering them, which is the only thing that you and your brothers have been able to do here so far.

How many different versions of “you will know false prophets by their acts” do you need to study scientifically and ponder synoptically before you realize that Mr. Smith’s main purpose in life was screwing his neighbor’s wives and teenage daughters? Do you need to hear it in Reformed Egyptian?
