Catholics, what do you do with 1 John 5? It contradicts RCC doctrine concerning the assurance of salvation. See for yourself.
19And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
First, it tells you to pay attention to the word of the prophets. So pay attention to it! … what follows does include some prophecy that John contributed to Scripture as he was carried along by the Holy Spirit, and you will do well to pay attention to it.
OK so far…
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept man’s testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
The RCC says we can’t know that we have eternal life at any point before we die, nor will we actually have eternal life until some time after we die. Yet John writes these things about God’s testimony that we have eternal life, and he tells us he writes these things so that you may know that you have eternal life.
As a life long, and I thought, informed, and I know practcing RC, I’m not sure that this is actually a doctrine, although you do have the message straight. But your only sharring a partial truth.
Its origin is in a man named John who spoke from God, and you will do well to pay attention to it. Deal with what is found there. That’s twice now that I’ve addressed the issue, so if you truly think I want to make it three, whatever is wrong with you is no small thing.
Friend, can we please “play nice?” Christian Chairity is a good thing.:yup:
RCC doctrine says we can’t have assurance of salvation but the Bible says something quite different in 1 John. What do you do with this?
Your right the bible does say something different…
1 John Chapter 5
3* For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4* For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
And if we believe in Jesus we will do all of the following:
Be a Baptized Christian, obey All of God Commandments, Obey the Beautitudes MT. Chapter 5, and do everyting with love. PJM
13I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life…
16 If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God * will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal.
There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.
John 20:"21*
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” 22* And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. *
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” **
If you take the reading from 1 John, with the reading from John 20:
(Both the same John), you can see why the RCC teaches as she does. (This is the very short version). Mortal sin, because it is so serious: i.e. Abortion=murder, that is factually seperates us from a Saving relationship with Christ, until we Confess (as Jesus DIRECTED to one of His bishops or priest, and are forgiven.) We call it the sacrament od Reconcillation.
*
1 John Chapter 1 (which comes before chapter 5)
"8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." **
18 We know that any one born of God does not sin, but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.
2 Tim. 3:16
" 16 All scripture is inspired by God and * profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."
John 3:5 "5* Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God”
Mt. 19: "17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. **If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” **
Friend there is a great deal more evidence I can give to explain the RCC position, but, I’ll see how you respond to this post first.
Love and prayers,
