to be precise, and precision is a requirement of helpful discussion on this topic, “we” do not consecrate bread and wine, Jesus consecrates bread and wine thereby changing its substance into His body and blood, while its accidents (physical, chemical characteristics) stay the same. He does this through the priest who stands in alter Christus, in the place of Christ, in the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Also, in response to an earlier post we do not “relive” the sacrifice of Calvary at each Mass, we “participate” in the entire Paschal Mystery, the incarnation, life, suffering, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus in the Mass and the Eucharist.
