Trouble is brewing for RealCatholicTV. Those who have followed this thread concerning their website may want to keep abreast of developments. There is also a thread in the Catholic News forum.
Denver, Colo., Aug 17, 2011 / 06:12 pm (CNA).- Michael Voris, the founder and host of RealCatholicTV, says he was completely unaware of recently discovered troubles within his organization, involving a staff apologist’s sexually explicit writings, and his nonprofit corporation’s loss of legal status two years ago.

He was speaking or clergy that was corrupt. Only in the minds of a few does anyone see our clergy in the same way. Just because a bishop does not do what your think they should does not make them corrupt. You need instead to understand the pastoral reasons for their actions before condemning them.
When bishops do not do what Rome expressly asks of them, then they are being disobedient and, if not corrupt, then cowardly.

The bishop in my diocese distributed free syringes, paid for with the Faithful’s money, to drug users–it made the national news. I wonder what his “pastoral reasons” were for doing such a thing?

The diocese is also hosting an LGBT conference this September, run by a group whose orthodoxy is questionable at best, and with the good bishop offering a Mass for those attending. An educated guess is that he will not use this event as an occasion for calling active homosexuals to repentance and a return to the norms of Catholic moral teaching for the good of their souls.

Here is the bulletin entry copied below. Notice where the item is situated: just beneath the “Invitation to Married Couples” header (for World Wide Marriage Encounter). The entries appear a few weeks after New York State legalized same-sex “marriage”. It is also worthwhile to recall that the same bishop celebrated an “Inaugural Mass” for Andrew Cuomo, where the staunchly pro-abortion, pro-same-sex marriage governor-elect–conspicuously seated with his live-in lover (read: “not his wife”)–was given Holy Communion. In his homily, the bishop then lauded Cuomo’s political office/activity as “a form of evangelization”. This also made the news.

The Catholic Association for Lesbian and Gay Ministry is hosting its bi-annual conference in Albany this year on September 22-25, 2011, at the Best Western Albany Airport Inn. The theme of the conference is: “Setting the Table for LGBT People in a Diverse Church.” Keynote speakers for the conference include the Rev. Vicki Wunsch, Dr. Orlando Espin, and Dr. Caitlin Ryan. On Friday and Saturday there are a variety of workshops in the afternoon for participants to attend. You can register for the entire conference (Thursday night through Sunday noon) or for just one day if that works for your schedule. Bishop Howard Hubbard will join us for the celebration of the Eucharist on Saturday evening at 5:15 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact the CALGM Vice-President for Conferences, Fr. Bob Pierson, OSB, at rpierson@csbsju.edu

The bishop and clergy actively promoting such actions must have some very good “pastoral reasons” for doing so, though.

So, if one is to use the name “Catholic” in one’s title (as Real** Catholic** TV does), then you must be approved. Therefore, this group is operating in contradiction to Catholic teaching. Perhaps they can do an expose on themselves. Or better yet, perhaps if they were to remove their own beam, they might see better to remove the motes of others.
For your reference, I just came upon another important citation with regard to using the name “Catholic.” Canon Law states it specifically here: (Maybe it was taken from the V-II document I quoted earlier)

Canon 216. Since they participate in the mission of the Church, all the Christian faithful have the right to promote or sustain apostolic action even by their own undertakings, according to their own state and condition. **Nevertheless, no undertaking is to claim the name “Catholic” without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.

Canon 300**. No association is to assume the name “Catholic” without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority according to the norm of can. 312.

Pfft. I am truly sorry for your troubles and I know that Christians can be the first to start picking up stones. I think the whole thing is much ado about very little. A lapse of judgment? Who hasn’t done that. It it not a serious scandal, in my opinion and did not deserve any attention. I think if it had been other organization it would not have been mentioned. The only lesson here as I see it is that we are far better off focusing on principles and doctrine, not people. That is the lesson I think Mr. Voris misses and I would hope that those here that do not like this in Mr. Voris will refrain from hypocrisy and not focus on this person and this episode too much. It is simply not what Christianity is about. I am disappointed that CNS posted that story, but I guess they want their ratings too, even if one must engage in calmuny.

Now, as to the other issue of losing the tax-exempt status. I think this is one area that diocesan oversight can help.

Liza, I will pray for you and your husband that Christians will not forget themselves and behave with charity. I also posted on the CNS article.

RealCatholicTV is a wonderful website, and I have never seen them teach anything contradictory to the Church. I watch the Vortex everyday, and love Michael’s style. As to being “uncharitable,” or “offensive,” the only way he would be uncharitable would be not to speak out about the Truth, and just leave the world in it’s sin. And of course the Truth is offensive. We don’t like to be told no. But that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Here is a link to a youtube Vortex episode about being “offensive.”

Jesus dined with sinnersm I suppose your condeming Him as well.

Jesus dined with sinnersm I suppose your condeming Him as well.
 Firstly, Jesus was God. He knew what He was doing, and how He was fixing things. Jesus couldn’t create scandal. God is God.

Secondly, we are not Jesus or God. We cannot use this as an excuse. Jesus also turned the tables over in the temple… so does this mean if we see liturgical abuse we should start doing the same kinda thing and turn to Matthew 21:12 as a justification?

Lastly, there is a difference between hanging out with sinners and making space for a sin and justifying a sin. I love how people think Jesus hung out with sinners as opposed to… perfect people on earth? We are all sinners. Jesus dined, ate, laughed and cried with sinners his entire life (save for Mary)!

Notice the difference here:

“If you struggle to be sober, come to our public ministry on the 12th August to learn how, with the help of the Lord, you can become sober and live a new life in Christ and free yourself from sin”

vs

“Alcoholics! Welcome! Come to our meeting on 12th August. We will discuss issues such as ‘making space for alcoholics in the Church’ and ‘why is the Church so anti-Alcohol?’ and ‘Alcohol, the Church and the 21st Century: How the Church got it wrong’. Bring your bar friends”

Jesus dined with sinnersm I suppose your condeming Him as well.
Jesus preached to sinners: “REPENT, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.”

and His admonition to sinners who corresponded to divine grace was: “Go, and SIN NO MORE.” (In other words He did not give the woman caught in the act of adultery further license to commit adultery.)

Note that Jesus did not merely say: “Go and sin,” which, effectively, is what the majority of bishops and priests in the “west” are saying–either actively, in disobedience, or passively, with cowardice.

Recall that the first of the Spiritual Works of Mercy is to ADMONISH THE SINNER.

RCTV’s approach shocks and even offends many nominal Catholics because it is radically different from the status quo, which has become “blissfully ignorant ‘Catholics’ asleep at the wheel”.

Sure. It would be nice if we could just ignore the call to evangelize. If we could just steer clear of all controversy and completely avoid our Catholic vocations to charitably–yet boldly, prophetically and perhaps even under threat of persecution for the Faith–announce the truth. But that’s not the way things work.

If the lay folks in the U.S. are waiting for the bishops and priests to “do it all”, they are not only kidding themselves, but they are also failing in their vocation as Catholic Christians to be “leaven in the world” and to be citizens in “a City set on a hill”.

Jesus dined with sinnersm I suppose your condeming Him as well.
Jesus did not break the Religious Laws of the Prophets. Nor did He promote/encourage Sexual sins.

Mt 5:17:20
“Think not that I have come to abolish the law of the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but fulfil them.”… “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Even Cardinals and Bishops are required to follow the teachings of the Church.
See your Catechism of the Catholic Church. Second Edition, Code of Canon Law, and the Vatician web site.

vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19861001_homosexual-persons_en.html
" 15. We encourage the Bishops, then, to provide pastoral care in full accord with the teaching of the Church for homosexual persons of their dioceses.
No authentic pastoral programme will include organizations in which homosexual persons associate with each other without clearly stating that homosexual activity is immoral.
A truly pastoral approach will appreciate the need for homosexual persons to avoid the near occasions of sin.
We would heartily encourage programmes where these dangers are avoided.
But we wish to make it clear that departure from the Church’s teaching, or silence about it, in an effort to provide pastoral care is neither caring nor pastoral." etc.

Also see CCC 2357 through 2359 regarding homosexuality.
scborromeo.org/ccc.htm
Also in CCC see footnotes at bottom of page which includes supporting Bible passages.

Speaker “Reverand Vicki Wunsch” promotes homosexual acts, divorce, and gay marriage - per her website which they consider “Holy Unions”.

The Mexicans had the correct idea, of putting out a sign “We want a Catholic Bishop”. Their Bishop has recently been called to Rome for investigation.
If your Bishop violates the teachings of the Church in the CCC or Code of Canon Law - contact the following and provide copies of documentation: " calcatholic.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?id=0f724786-05df-4511-a0da-3ba138ccfeec ".
If his actions are offensive to many, you can also include a petition signed by Catholics in his Diocese.
Via Canon Law, a Bishop can be removed from office.

Regarding RealCatholicTV - they have always reported the “Truth”, and yet go further with written documentation.
CCC - “1822 Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.”
CCC - “1855 Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him.”

If we love our neighbor as ourselves, we will want them to get to eternal Heaven.
Admonishing sinners, Instructing the uniformed, and counselling the doubtful are 3 of the Spiritual Works of Mercy.

When RCTV violates the teachings of the Church, only then should they be admonished. They are providing a needed service.

If all USA Bishops actively and continuously promoted reading of the “CCC 2nd Ed” for everyone including Priests in their Diocese, this Country would not be in such a mess due to lousy catechesis in the past 40 years.

RealCatholicTV, although perhaps a bit provocative sometimes, is certainly more orthodox than CatholicTV. I’ve seen things on CatholicTV that make me sick when I think about how many people watch it, mostly along the lines of taking ecumenism too far or engaging in religious pluralism or immodestly dressed women, or a Jewish rabbi teaching Old Testament bible study (not a Catholic Jew, I mean a full Christ-denying Jew).

So if you’re looking for one to regularize, I’d go with Vorris’ channel.

More orthodox? What have you seen that is not orthodox. CatholicTV does not need to be “regularized”. It has always operated within proper Church authority.

Sorry, regularize was a bad word. I meant, “if you’re looking for one to watch regularly”, or to “become a regular” at like one becomes “a regular” at a restaurant.

As for unorthodox and liberal stuff? I used to watch the channel on tv all the time (via skyangel) and vague religious pluralism and ecumania was a serious problem for me. Also as I said, immodestly dressed women… Oh and a priest who acted and held himself like a teenage child…

And the biggest one:
Rabbis do not understand the old testament and should not be teaching it to Catholics. That is just plain wrong.

Don’t get me wrong, not everything was bad. I thought the kids trivia show was cute and I generally liked the Robert Barron stuff and a few other things, but in the end the bad out weighed the good for my personal tastes.

Pluralism, if that was really actually taught, is unorthodox. Nothing else you mentioned is. Ecumenism is a part of our Catholic faith. Ecumania is nothing but rhetoric. Immodesty is a matter of opinion, and possibly sinful. It has nothing to do with doctrine and can not be unorthodox. My priest has acted like a teenager during a homily in order to demonstrate the improper posture for communion. It is nothing to do with doctrine.

As to this last statement, Rabbis are not unorthodox. What they teach may or may not be. They surely are capable of teaching language, or even history relating to the Old Testament. They can also explain a Jewish understanding of passages. As long as this is kept in context, it is not unorthodox *Catholic *teaching.

I do appreciate your answers and I can see why Catholic TV is something you do not like. However, it is not fair to call it unorthodox.

A rabbi was teaching ot bible study on a catholic program. That is wrong. As to you finding some way to respond to each and every detail of my post and belittle it, I’m totally amazed.

I don’t care what your priest did during a homily. I didn’t ask you anything about your priest. There are many objective rules about modesty. Ecumania is a term used to describe ecumenism taken too far. Lots of things are rhetoric.

You’re welcome to love the program as much as you want. Nobody is stopping you. I don’t like it for the above mentioned reasons. Unless you’re the owner of the channel or something then I’m not sure why you’re taking it so personally or defensively. Not everyone has to like your favorite catholic tv channel. Nor is it a good idea to be a forum dominator, one who feels like they have to have the last word on every last little thing with an overbearing argumentative how dare you disagree with me or dislike my tv channel personality before they’re able to go on living a normal life. It just annoys people and causes you to be taken less seriously. I’ve heard about all I’m interested in hearing from you. You’re welcome to keep talking, but I’m done listening.

Oh and once again, Jewish rabbis should not be teaching the OT on catholic programs. That is ecumania. It is also dangerous because the viewers get the idea that it’s ok and that the OT belongs to the Jews and can lead to religious pluralist ideas.

Don’t know about being disobedient. When told by USCCB and the World Youth Conference that they were basically not welcome to teach catechism, Voris insist otherwise and is refusing to back off, saying he answers to a higher authority than the Church. This is dangerous ground to put oneself on as a Catholic since we are all called to obedience.
Mark Shea, is that you?

Anyway, to the OP, I have never seen CatholicTV.com, I do, however, subscribe to rctv.com. I highly recommend it; the talks Michael gives are very thourough. 🙂

Why are people so darn critical of RealCatholicTV? It’s Catholic teaching in-your-face style. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Many Catholics find Michael Voris’ work very appealing. Better than having some heretical politically correct show.

To get back to the original question, as far as I can tell, “RealCatholicTV” is very faithful to the Pope and Magisterium.
No one has proven otherwise.
They expose those in power who do not and lead other Catholics astray. They use documentation to prove their statements. This makes RealCatholicTV a target for those who for their own reasons wish to violate teachings of the Church.
