Humans are immoral because we have a soul and reasoning faculty, not becase we behave any worse than wild animals.

Hunting is obviously not for everyone and nobody is trying to persuade you to try it.

But be careful about playing the Pharisee in this drama. Put down that rock.
The higher a being is in the order of life, the farther it can fall.

CS Lewis said that demons are made not from bad fleas, but bad archangels.

So the human being can sin, because he has a mind and a will that can follow it, while a lion cannot, but that does not make the lion a higher being, rather the reverse.

Wrong.

Every evil you find in man you will find also in the animal kingdom. Including cruelty.

You’ve been watching too much Disney.
You chose the wrong thing. I’ve never seen a Disney movie or TV show in my life. For some reason, I can’t stand it. Can’t stand fantasy, I guess.

No, I won’t find every evil in man in the animal kingdom. Animals don’t plot to destroy another’s reputation, job, and cause general suffering.

Hunting is not a sport. It’s killing. In a sport, both sides AGREE to the “game.” Baseball is a sport, soccer is a sport, ice hockey is a sport, but hunting, no, that is not a sport. Cecil, and other innocent victims, did not agree to be lured to their death. For the same reason, horse racing is not a sport. Hunting is a way for men with little-to-no self-esteem to stroke their egos even though no one is buying.

I doubt a fair trial is possible. A wealthy American in sub-Saharan Africa, weighed against the emotional value of a local mascot?

I’m not sure I share your opinion about the judicial system of the whole of sub Saharan Africa but that’s the reality when wealthy Americans go to sub Saharan Africa to kill local mascots. Maybe he would have been better advised to continue to break hunting laws in his own country.

I saw it all the time on the farm in the pecking order of cats. A younger, smaller mother cat getting ostracized from the group by a stronger, older mother cat. If the younger attempted to do anything more than eat the leftover scraps (after the older cat was completely full) it would get claws across her face. Cats don’t have remotely the social order that humans do, but this is the closet equivalent you can get to destroying a reputation. They also have to make sure their kittens are a good distance apart from other cats if they don’t want to get beaten up.

But considering the severe limitations of the intellect of animals, I suppose you have some sort of semblance of a point, though I’m not sure what value it has. I mean, there won’t be any dogs committing tax evasion or slander in a serial publication…because it’s a dog…

Problem is, humans are not too rarely the most immoral and far from God on the list. I would gladly take being a fool than being someone who acts like Palmer. In my world that is grace, love and decency. Wouldn’t trade it for the best killing spree “high” in the world.
I agree with you, totally, 100%. To be Palmer would be awful, not just now because his life and career are ruined by his own hand, but even before. He seems a very unhappy man. I should pity him, but I find that difficult to do.

Hunting is a sport with rules that involves killing wild animals. Cecil is not an “innocent victim” because Cecil is not a human being. People have enjoyed the sport of hunting since the dawn of man.

It’s not ‘sport’ that’s laughable. Sports have rules and degree of peer matched talents

I think a lot of people feel this way. I don’t approve of the real vengeance though - the bloodlust in pursuit of him. I am ok with horror, shaming, etc. and I think that is appropriate, as long as you don’t cross the same line he crossed. What is the point of that. He should be extradited and faces charges in Zimbabwe.

The dentist got the same thrill in killing the lion, as the bored 15 year old boy does when he torches a cat in the alley for fun. Only difference is the dentist pays $55k and gets a great photo.

Next year, it will be Cecil-who?

When adolescents take pleasue in cruelty to animals isn’t it said to indicate an unbalanced mind

And, in fact, many rules of hunting are for the sole purpose of making it harder for the hunter. Interestingly, the dentist is being simultaneously pillored for bothh having an unfair advantage and for not using the most efficient method available. Such is the absurdity of the mob.

I’m not a member of a ‘mob’ however as an individual I do find the actions of this individual particularly odious

Saved… for now: Cecil the lion’s cubs are being protected by his BROTHER after fears rival male will kill them and take over the pride, says Oxford University expert.

Thank God!
Unfortunately, there is breaking news that Cecil’s brother Jericho has also been killed in an illegal hunt:

Also on CNN.

But Jesus cares more about Palmer, even (and especially) an unrepentant one, than 100 trillion lions.
How do you know that Jesus cares more about Palmer than 100 trillion lions? Did you ever ask him? I also don’t believe that humans are infinitely more important to God than animals. And scientific studies have shown that animals do have a rudimentary form of morality. Try reading, for example, Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce, Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals (University of Chicago Press, 2009).

I agree, I don’t think God would have created anything he didn’t care about. I think it’s quite unwise of some people to attempt to know the mind of God.

As to another’s remark that Cecil’s Cubs would be killed by the new alpha: As that would happen whenever a large male was killed, that, in itself, would not make the “taking” wrong.
I believe the cubs will now be “protected.” If so, I’m sure someone will credit the public outrage over Cecil for saving their lives.

Sure, I don’t disagree with you that there is a LOT of cruelty in the animal kingdom. I’ve been around animals all my life. They don’t sit and plan HOW to damage someone’s reputation and take away their job, etc., though. And because they lack that capacity, they are not responsible for their cruel acts. Humans, however, who DO sit and plan how best to destroy another human, DO have reason, etc., and because they do, they ARE responsible for their actions. That’s why Mr. Palmer needs to be extradited to Zimbabwe.

I’m a Master’s level theology student. While it’s acknowledged that no one can actually KNOW the mind of God (God doesn’t actually have a mind per se, he just is), we DO have to attempt to figure out what the Bible means and how much Jesus knew about his own part in the divine plan, etc.

Jesus, on the Cross, redeemed ALL creation for God the Father, not just human beings. So, I agree with you, God cares about ALL creation - Mr. Palmer and Cecil both.

The Vatican is actually rethinking its stance on the question: Do animals have souls? So much more is known about animals now than in the past. One could also read When Elephants Weep by Jeffrey M. Masson, a great lover of animals - and people - and not a Roman Catholic, BTW.
