There are six billion or so humans, and only a few thousand lions.

The world could do with a lot less of the former, and more of the latter.

I agree I’m not known to have a soft spot for pets or a great love of nature. But I respect wildlife and I don’t think we should kill anything we don’t need (or want) to eat.

If people don’t read the story, I took away a few things:

He baited the lion to come out of the sancutary, he also did break the law in taking some sort of band off of the lion. I hope he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law, if it be extradition or whatever remedy, so be it.

He did wrong in his style of hunting but how many of us are vegetarians to begin with? I’ve tried it certainly and I am probably a low meat eater.

This makes me ill. A lot of beauty and nobility destroyed there, by someone so small and ugly.

A part of me would love to see him hanging in a noose. LOVE it.

I originate from a family of beef farmers so I’m not saying that I object to killing livestock. But to kill this animal for pleasure is nauseating. A dentist armchair warrior

Yeah. The body requires a certain amount of protein to stay healthy. The methods for obtaining it are often unpleasant, but the body needs it, nonetheless.

The body does not need a lionskin rug, or powdered rhino horn.

Man does not live by bread alone. There is more to live than stuffing your face.

Hunting is an honorable tradition that is as old as mankind.

Hunting for food but killing for pleasure is probably a sign of s personality disorder

Hunting for food and pleasure, both. Almost nobody in the modern world “needs” to hunt for food. Food is, at best, just another benefit of hunting.

People have enjoyed hunting since before the dawn of man. Ascribing to them a personality disorder is unchariable and ignorant.

By the way, the rules of the forum require that news thread titles be the title of the article originally cited, in this case: “Cecil the lion’s killer revealed as American dentist”

I think you will find that many people hunt for food. I think also that hunting in history ended with the quarry being consumed. Travelling to Africa for the sole purpose of illegally killing a magnificent beast for no useful reason other than naked self serving pleasure strikes me as psychopathic. This flawed excuse for a human being clearly has enough money from the dentally challenged to fuel his mid life crisis and beheading this beast clearly made him feel more manly than doing veneers. I hope they extradite him try him and imprison him for long enough for him to realise that his personal sense of fulfilment does not mean he can act like a savage in other parts of the world with the planet’'s wildlife

You may have a point. It is very deep-rooted, about as primal as you can get. In our DNA. Other primates do it too. Take a look at this.
Chimpanzees overhunt monkey prey almost to extinction
Humans have made a nasty habit of killing off entire species of animal.
Passenger pigeons once formed huge flocks in North America, but humans hunted them on an industrial scale. Largely as a result of this, the species was utterly wiped out by the early 20th century.
But it seems we’re not the only animal that can’t stop ourselves over-hunting our prey.
In a sinister echo of the passenger pigeon story, chimpanzees in one area of Africa have over-hunted the monkeys they prey on. As a result, the monkey population has been pushed close to local extinction.

I think you will find that almost nobody, today, literally hutns for food. Even in the darkest Africa is is more economical to make a trip to the grocery store. That is certainly the case for hunting in “developed” countries.

People continue to hunt for the pleasure of the experience. I know you find that objectionable but that does not make it psychopathic. In fact, I would say that ascribing psychopathy to those you disagree with is psychopathic. Some people, it seems, are just not content to disagree, they must also diminish the other even to the point of questioning their humanity and mental competence.

There are laws governing hunting not, as you would imply, to prevent it but, rather, simply to control it. If the dentist or his guides violated those laws then they will be held accountable through the judicial system.

But your irrational diatribes against hunting (for pleasure, as virtually all hunting is) add nothing useful to the subject.

Some might argue that this is a primitve behavior that ought to be expunged from polite society. But that ignores the fact that hunting has evolved with man and it is a highly regulated and socialized activity today.

I’ve killed fish, poultry, rabbits, hare and eaten them. I was brought up in rural Ireland where believe me first class protein was scarce but for a fool of a middle aged man to give $55,000 to travel abroad to illegally kill a Lion TO MAKE HIM SELF HAPPY is highly disordered. Let’s hope he’s delighted with his decision when Mugabe demands his extradition

Well this wasn’t he broke the law. I’m interested to know which other atavistic throwback passtimes you think are a great idea

For all we know he’s dining on lion steaks as we speak. I’ve no doubt that you think you could spend his money more wisely than he. It always seems that way to me when I watch the lifestyles of the rich and famous. There is more to disorder than your disapproval, though.

Our family often travel abroad and spend quite a bit as tourists (e.g. visiting Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle). Is that disordered? No.

My guess is that the dentist was relying on his guides and that they were the ones who made the error in the hunt. Whether such ignorance will constitute a viable legal defense is something we’ll have to leave to the courts.

I’m curious when excatly you believe “atavistic throwback passtimes” became disordered an pathalogical.

I am a vegetarian and have never hunted anything in my life (for which I thank God). I used to cry and cry when my dad chopped the heads off of our chickens. I would hate eating them. I finally just stopped doing it. Much easier for me.

That said, I agree with you - hunting for food is natural and normal. This is not. This is decadence and pettiness. Pointless destruction of God’s creatures. By a dentist with 10 grocery stores within a 20 mile radius of his home, a big fat paycheck and a penchant for cruelty, likely stemming from inadequacy and boredom.

Why are people like this so nauseating? I am not sure I want to know the answer to that. Don’t tell me if you know.
