- No. But it is normative to such meetings.
So why is this not normal in a “normal environment” such as EF or NO Mass?
- I see a parallel at Pentecost - that was just such an environment of praise and worship.
I would never argue that the apostles had no Charisms, or that any of us lack them. Although, I wonder why there was a need to make such a movement - such as CCR - if these gifts were already apparent within the Church. To me, they seem to be more manifestly evident outside of an environment that is catering to magnify these said gifts. (I am walking on broken glass here.) Logically, from an intellectual point of view, I feel when one puts himself within an environment where there is some kind of expectation for someone to receive a “Gift” at some point, one is far more likely to be victim of a group mentality, therefore this “gifts”, seem to me, to be less then genuine due to this fact.
- I would say that the CCR seeks to fulfill the mission of the dismissal at mass, when we are “sent”.
And this was missing before 1967? Are you saying that the E.F. and O.F. do not offer this?
- The gifts are received at baptism. Prayers are offered for their release at charismatic functions.
I agree, to a point; I don’t feel that one needs to be at a charismatic function to release these gift though, I feel that they seem more “genuine” while not surrounded by people expecting and encouraging themselves and others to release these said gifts. Jesus was asked by his disciples how we should pray, he then taught the “Our Father’ - which seems like a rather simple, straightforward prayer that everyone can say., in comparison to praying “in tongues“, which seems opposed to this idea, and excludes the majority.
- In the early days, it almost certainly did. Pentecost, on the “Lord’s Day”, again was the first example.
Again, are you saying that this was somehow prevented post “the early days” - or at least until 1967? What did the liturgy lack until 1967?
- Video? What good would a video do - especially viewed by another soul which God chooses to illumine differently?
My diocese has had many “charismatic revivals“, and I will admit that I have never been to one, but I have talked to others whom have participated and I have heard of some questionable practices that had manifested themselves within these revivals. I can search the internet and find them myself, although, I felt it better to have someone who is involved in this movement direct me to a sound source to find the “typical” form.
- 1967 was only when a certain group of persons re-focused on the Holy Spirit and began to share their experiences.
So, before 1967, people lost focus on the Holy Spirit? Could you explain how you came to this conclusion?
- Here are but a few instances in scripture: Luke 2:25-27, Acts 2:1-17; Acts 4:8; Acts 4:31; Acts 8:29-39; Acts 10:44-47; Acts 11: Acts 11:28; Acts 19:6; Romans 8:26; Romans 15:19; 1 Corinthians 2:4; 1 Corinthians 12; 1 Corinthians 14; Galatians 3:5; 2 Peter 1:21; 1 John 4:2; Revelation 1:10. There are many more.
St. Matt. 24:24 comes to mind in reference to untested spirits. Could you be
certain of
all the charisms that you might see in the renewal? Have they
all been tested as Scripture has prescribed? I read on a
previous post in this thread that they sometimes get together and speak prophecy… who would test these? Could they be false if not somehow infallibly tested? What good would a untested prophecy be? I read on
another post that someone fell down and ‘trembled”, “quaked” or shook, then some seminarians determined it was NOT of the Sprit! Is this how these gifts are tested? Even if was indeed a Priest, can we feel secure in their discernment without a decision from Rome?
Certainly you have read the catechism (CCC 688, 798-801, 890, 951, 2003, 2035) on charisms? Certainly you have heard the Popes, Bishops and Priests defend and support the charisms? Did you know that the Pope, whenever he exercises infallibility (CCC 2035), is exercising a charism? What if the Pope thought it was hokey or embarrassing to do so? Did you know that the infallibility of the Pastors of the Church is also an exercising of their charism? (CCC 890). Neither the charisms, nor their manifestations are to be shunned, but rather celebrated and embraced - since through them the Church is built up. Is there something wrong with building the Church up?
This is certainly a straw man, we are not discussing charisms that have been subject to the infallible testing of the Church. They have been tested, and I agree that they are indeed good! The CCC speaks of gifts that are all genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit, and requires that they “all” be tested as such ( CCC: 801) as the Church has prescribed. There is nothing wrong with building up the Church, I just have reservations about doing under false pretense.
Certainly, you have been confirmed and received the Holy Spirit and His charisms? What, exactly, is in the manifestation of the charisms that so persistently troubles you?
What exactly? That they have not been tested well enough and are subject to… well anything.
