They used an HIV-based pseudovirus to mimic SARS in a petri dish or whatever to along with cells.
You’re ignoring the word “combined”, they combined the HIV structure with cell lines expressing horseshot bat.

The abstract:
In this study, we investigated the receptor usage of the SL-CoV S by combining a human immunodeficiency virus-based pseudovirus system with cell lines expressing the ACE2 molecules of human, civet, or horseshoe bat.
Nowhere does it say they crossed HIV with a coronavirus.
They studied coronaviruses by using a different virus and putting that non-coronavirus with cells from humans, civet cats and bats (separately).
Read the “Methods” section.

There’s not a great international alternative
So none.
The Hill. Another newspaper? Read thei history. My head hurts.
I follow the Lancet in the meantime.
You do you.
Cheers.

How about the naval bases China is building to enforce the nine dash rule, quite a hefty chunk of the South China Sea, which, in spite of its name, is mostly international waters.
That is a concern too. There have been a number of incidents between fisherman from Indonesia and the Philippines, and those with China in that region.
While corporations (and consumers) have been mesmorized by cheap goods, we overlooked all of the abuses committed by this regime.

Fine. We’ll use “combine”. Where did they combine HIV and a coronavirus? I read the methods section. I didn’t see it. I’m open to correction here.

China and the WHO’s chief: Hold them both accountable for pandemic

Instead of focusing on global counter-pandemic efforts, the WHO’s Tedros was politicizing the crisis and defending China’s missteps.
Peas in a pod?
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as mentioned in the The Hill opinion piece is a member of a party that was ideologically aligned Marxist-Leninism. Was health minister when three outbreaks were covered up.
This was from 2017.

Here’s the New York Times back in 2017 (it’s behind a paywall but what the non-paying public can see doesn’t look good for the WHO):

I purposely selected a leftist source to demonstrate that it’s increasingly an issue across partisan groups. The WHO has not been a morally responsible organization.

To be fair, it’s frontline workers are excellent. It’s management is unfortunately beholden to those it’s funded by.

@ATraveller

In any major organization that has thousands and thousands of people working for it, there’s going to be plenty of exemplary employees. That isn’t really the issue and it never was. The issue is the stark difference in how China was handled in 2002 compared to how it was handled in 2019/2020. It’s pretty clear that the head of the organization and possibly some other upper management people were beholden to China at the expense of good science and at the expense of human lives.

If other nations look at the figures in China and believe them, they’ll assume the Chinese methods of battling this have been successful, and perhaps do the same, not realising China are simply lying, as people have said, to protect their own image.
This is so important. Science only works when data is reliable.
Considering Italy, Spain and France (and others too, too many to list) have locked down, why are their trends similar to China but just higher in numbers? We know a series of missteps in the US have led them to where they are now. South Korea took a very different path from everyone else and they are doing much better.

People around the world - not without reason - are accusing their leaders of various missteps. It’s happening in the UK. It’s happening in Mexico. It’s happening in Brazil. It’s happening in the US with our administration. It’s happening in literally dozens of other places. That will all need to examined in detail.

Taiwan has done very well for itself but they know what they’re up against and they know the stakes. Europe does not. North America does not. We’re largely still sweet and naïve, or at least we were.

But yes, none of this negates the issue of suppression and corruption. Fabricated data leads to bad decisions, and we see that domino effect around the world.

Otjm, I am not claiming the virus was brought to China by the US. I am saying China is telling its own people that - because they are.
I was exceedingly aware of where the rumor started. I find it… interesting, that they would start such a rumor.

And I am well aware of the chin chatter concerning war. Backing an enemy into a corner with no alternatives has never been a particularly good way to conduct business. However, I am more inclined to see the Iranians start shooting than I am the Chinese.

Nowhere did I say that. Please STOP
You wrote this and then quoted the abstract. AIDS isn’t a virus. It’s a condition. HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. It’s unhelpful to make an unsubstantiated claim.
Accidental release and intentionally made is most likely. The nucleotide sequence contains AIDS and SARS sequences and a 2008 research paper discussing the sequence noted that adding AIDS to SARS increased the infection rate in humans. The sequence also has a cleavage site between two proteins (S1 and S2) that fold to make the spike protein that can only be cleaved by a human protein.
