Not to be confrontational but what kind of Catholic puts up sports banner in a place of worship??
That is a good question, but it if one leaves Christ because of it, then the banner would be an excuse, not a reason. That is the poster’s point. A sports banner, a mean priest, an unfriendly parishioner, the design of the Church, the music; people can find all sorts of excuse for staying home, but the problem will always primarily be that the person just doesn’t desire the presence of Christ.

Any parishioner who stops coming to Mass over this is a Catholic who has absolutely no understanding of the Eucharist.

I can understand a parishioner who moves to another parish. But stopping coming to Mass? In Peter’s words, “Lord, to whom should we go?”
Not disagreeing in principle.

However, after being pummeled with this sort of disrespect time and time again, human weakness will make even the strongest Catholic wonder, “Well, if no one else here takes their religion seriously, why should I?”

Great point.

As St. Paul repeatedly told us, we should be cognizant of those who are weak in the faith, or those who need help and encouragement in the faith. Actions like this can make those who are weak stumble.

Jesus had strong warnings about those who cause others to stumble.

I agree with you; people find excuses to leave the church in many way and in different places. Why give them another excuse?

I do wonder why parishioners who didn’t feel it was appropriate didn’t just say so, respectfully, as a group. I mean how hard is that - especially at a small parish. Just send an email or make a phone call.
