Church Says Girl’s Communion Not Valid

story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040819/ap_on_re_us/communion_denied

“BRIELLE, N.J. - An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot eat wheat has had her first Holy Communion declared invalid because the wafer contained no wheat, violating Roman Catholic doctrine. …”

The girl’s mother seems like she is making trouble. She has a political agenda it seems.

You’re assuming that. You don’t know.

I call them as I see them. The girl can receive the Precious Blood, yet the mother insists that the Church comply with her wishes. Either there is faulty catechesis, rejection of Church doctrine, or a political agenda.

I agree. They want a democratic church.

Or number 4- the rule is just stupid. Instead of adhering to minute points of the law the leaders of the Church should realize that a little humility and mercy could go a long way towards restoring the damaged reputation of the Church in this country.

y2daddy,

You will need to tell me why the rule is “just stupid”. I don’t think that the proper matter of a sacrament constitutes a “minute point”, and so I will need to be understand why you think it does. The girl could receive the Precious Blood, and thus receive a valid Communion. That it is become a matter of news stories tells me that, as fix suggests, there is is faulty catechesis, rejection of Church doctrine, or a political agenda. I will, out of charity, assume the first.

There are both practical and theological reasons for this particular rule. All this is explained thoroughly in David Lang’s book, “Why Matter Matters” published by Our Sunday Visitor.

and while we’re changing doctrine, lets change those stupid rules on priests finally being allowed to marry, women being priests…etc…

Bad Catechisis, Rejection of Church Doctrine or Political Agenda… only…I would knock it down to TWO reasons…assuming…rightly so…that Church Officials HAVE THOUROUGHLY explained the REASONS WHY…which now means the woman has had a crash course on Catechisis…but STILL persists in arguing instead of being OBEDIENT (which by the way…STILL allows her daughter to recieve the Sacred Blood) I can only come to the conclusion she is now pursuing,
  1. Rejection of Church Doctine. or 2. Political Agenda

I just heard about this issue from my wife, as I was lying in bed–my wife is in the tentative state of being interested in Catholicism but this story got her annoyed (why, oh ladies, do you spring these issues on us as we’re trying to get to sleep??? )

Not knowing of this, I said, I bet the media did a hatchet job on the Church again. I mentioned that full communion is in either species, and the girl could also receive spiritual communion–and that these options would almost certainly been offered.

I read the stories, and I was right–and it looks if the poor girls mother is using the issue for some egotistical grandstanding.

Any body got links on why it must have wheat in it?

Though it could be the points you listed above. I think a more likely reason is satan trying to destroy reverence for the Blessed Sacrament. Why else would it be in the news?

Yeah I don’t think the meida or this girl’s mohter gets it.
THe bishop said wine would be an alternative here.
Their is no compromise here is she drinks the wine she recieves both the precious blood an body of Christ just as if she were to have the waffer and not drink the blood. WHy the insistence of having her own special wafer. Many alcoholics wisely abstain from wine during communion. And partkae of the wafter instead. No problem right>
However if this girl’s mother gets her way this leads to other issues soon alcoholics who have been obeying the church rules may start demaninding thier own grape jiuce sho they can participagte more fully. Now you can see how this thing can start to be out of hand in a hurry. Theyn your going to have another party alergic to grapes of all kinds and they are going to want water.

The church has viable alternatives to this grils situations but the mother won’t take it. It makes me wonder to her real motives. Of course the media which has no understanding of catholic theology doens’t understand by not having the bread (wafer) the child is not loosing out on any type of sacrament here. THis is not a protestant church we don’t substitute the communion meal with grape juice and corn chips like some low church denoms. Rules are rules for a reason, THis stuff turns into anarchy right away without rules.

So giving in to everyones demands, no matter how absurd, is the best way to restore a damaged reputation? Whatever. :banghead:

If in order to receive the body of Christ the girl needs to put her life in danger, and the church cannot find a way to accomodate her desire to receive, I will be devisted to the point of being in a state of deep confusion and doubt about out faith.

I will be watching this one closely. My faith is on the line here. If one is lost because of a technicallity then my heart will be crushed. I read this article this morning as I am sure many of you did. I have faith that the Catholic church will allow this girl to recieve the body of Christ, no matter what it takes.

The wine consecrated at Mass is always diluted with water. There is a canon law governing how diluted with water the wine should be, but this is a disciplinary canon, and not a matter of doctrine that cannot be changed. There is no *theological * reason that the consecrated wine/water mixture could not be so dilute that it would meet United States Pharmacopeia Standards for pharmaceutical water. A dispensation could be granted allowing the wine to be ultra diluted if it was really necessary. No one is so sensitive that they are allergic to water that passes USP standards for water suitable for injection.

There is no need to obstinately insist that rice cakes be consecrated, since there is another viable option.

The girl could receive from the chalice, (even a specially prepared chalice into which there has been no particle of the host dropped). If wine is a problem she could receive the very low alcohol content wine “mustum” which is partially fermented.

But the girl’s mother in her letter to the Vatican makes it clear that there is not a medical reason for her being unable to receive from the cup. It is simply the mother’s wish that the child not consume any quantity of alcohol whatsoever, not even a drop or two of the precious blood.

Uh what are you talking about all she has to do is recieve the wine in its accidents and she will reeive the Lord’s body and blood. Read the cathechism as your faith is in a state of confusion.
