Colin Powell on Trump

I do think the Repub party has taken a populist/nationalist turn under Trump. Or perhaps more accurately, Trump was elected because a good part of the electorate has become populist/nationalist.

I can understand the feeling, and share it myself. I’m not a Repub and never have been, though I never vote Dem anymore because of abortion. But I’m tired of this country being run by the big capitalists, which are Dems now, not Repubs. I’m tired of them shipping jobs overseas and importing slave labor to make more money. And I’m tired of the wars.

Powell is a member of the privilieged establishment and has been for decades.

R-I-N-O: Republican In Name Only. Powell isn’t the only one.
So I guess the previous republican president wasn’t really republican either:

“We’ve seen nationalism distorted into nativism, forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America,” Bush said. “We see a fading confidence in the value of free markets and international trade, forgetting that conflict, instability and poverty follow in the wake of protectionism. We’ve seen the return of isolationist sentiments, forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places.” He went on to denounce “bigotry” and “white supremacy” in any form as “blasphemy against the American creed,”

Bush is wrong about some of this. Mr. Trump isn’t advocating isolationism. He just wants fair trade and is trying to defend our country against serious threats elsewhere in the world.

Yep, in a recent thread that discussed General Mattis’ rebuke of Trump, one Trump supporter immediately denounced the general as a “deep state operative”. Yet Trump himself had appointed him… seems a lot of Trump’s hand picked appointees become public enemies before long. As you said, Trump boasted that he knows better than all the generals…so…

Leaving the WHO in the middle of a global pandemic is, in my humble opinion, isolationism.

Or the withdrawal from a number of other major international treaties.

The treaties may be Congress’s responsibility (not sure about that), but the administration’s attitude that the world is riding on our coattails and owes us is not one that I share, or have ever seen much evidence of.

Bush has said the NY Times story that came out that said he was not voting for Trump is made up.

A treaty is not a treaty unless ratified by the Senate. Obama did not submit either the Paris Accords or the Iran treaty to the Senate because he knew the Senate would never pass either one.
So the only support they actually had was a handshake agreement with Obama alone.

Wait for the “RINO” comments.
Looks like you were right. I sympathize with him. I miss the GOP, back with it was “grand.”
That sounds akin to “no true Scotsman.”
You mean the SINO’s? 😆

I started drifting away when it was slowly taken over by the Tea Party, before it became the “T” Party. I will not support them with another dime until that nonsense is gone, if ever.

An important international handshake, the rejection (and non-replacement) of which is evidence of isolationism.
I think the U.S. is well served by being isolated from the country that calls for her death constantly. Giving taxpayer money to that odious regime was a terrible act.

And NOT giving away Americans’ money to third world dictators and Al Gore with the Paris Accords was meritorious. More “isolation” like that, we could use.

But you forget that Obama couldn’t get the Senate to go along with his hare-brained “treaties”. Too bad they didn’t stop him from giving billions to the billionaire Mullahs that run the place, but it doesn’t appear they knew about it in advance.
