I really am surprised at this. But perhaps I shouldn’t be. As I mentioned earlier, I went from a public high school to a Jesuit university where (in those days anyway) virtually every student was Catholic and had attended Catholic high schools. All the same, the language was as crude as anywhere else, albeit perhaps more inventive, except for the graduates of one particular Jesuit high school, or at least some of them. I never asked any of them what they thought about vulgarity and obscenity in Chaucer or Shakespeare.
