When it went from 18 to 21 in the early 80s it seemed that MADD was more responsible then that at least in the largely German Midwest.

That’s were the end to draconian almost Muslim rules on alcohol need to end. Why does the US have the oldest legal drinking age in the world?
The US is a land of excess. People turn 21 and drink themselves into oblivion. Idiots.

My understanding about brain development is that human brains are not fully connected until the early 20s. Certain substances (e.g., alcohol, marijuana) can interfere with this process, delaying it or even causing it to fail completely.

Most of my knowledge of brain development and processes are in regard to education and learning, so I am no expert by any means. But the drinking age may be related to actual brain science… and Americans’ propensity to take everything to the extreme.

Yes, I saw it well I was flight instructing. You had kids who were good didn’t drink a drop until they turned 21 become outright alcoholics. And then you had the kids who’d try and hide it at Greek social events because they’d see us flight instructors and we’d know they are underage be the responsible drinkers. Yes from my aeromedical instruction brain development only begins in the teen years once you get out the concrete operational stage and doesn’t finish until about 25-27. Also a reason to stop treating 13-17s like adults in court but that’s won’t happen either.

Same, I smoked from about 15-21, now I can’t stand to be around it.

Yeah if you walk into a random store here and buy a large amount of it at once you’ll draw some attention as well.

Once a group garners political clout, they will never stop. They’ll always find another goal to champion because they’ve attained power and they don’t want to let it go. Only when people start ignoring them do they go away.

You like to make fun of people like myself who had a family member killed by a drunk driver.

Dastardly move on your part but I would like to remind you that you only have a privilege to say it just because you’re alive and well.

Meanwhile… go ahead and play with the bullet of love.

If you want to kill a group of people do you go buy some kind of alcohol or go buy some kind of gun?
I’m not sure what you’re trying to achieve. I’m legally allowed to drink, smoke, drive, and own a gun. I’m responsible and within the law. Live your life and I’ll live mine.

I couldn’t find a poster who was making fun of the victims of drunk driving.

Please try again.

Do you believe we should institute some common sense alcohol reforms to combat this?

Is alcohol really more important to you than saving lives? Nobody needs high-concentration alcohol. Surely you would support common sense alcohol reform. And of course all right-thinking men will want to ban high-capacity glasses cups.
I thought we did the common sense reforms when MADD was the rage. This mostly leaves us with people who ignore the laws or just lack common sense.

Maybe people should attend classes and get ‘certified’ before they can drink.

I don’t believe there’s any Church teaching to support your opinion.
Alcohol is not evil.
Alcohol, tobacco, and guns, are not evil in and of themselves.
Quite right, but I think the US cultural obsession with liberty at the expense of the common good is perhaps evil. If not evil, self-destructive. Alcohol ruins lives, and yet we permit it, not for any lofty purpose but only so that we can get intoxicated on it. It is promoted by a powerful industry which cares only about profits and not the harm done. Same for tobacco. Guns have a legitimate purpose, but apart from that, gun culture is tainted by several shady aspects. As a society, we are going about it wrong, but I see no real hope of correcting it.

Sorry dude, this falls under Your Opinion. I’m gonna enjoy my time at the gun range and afterwards sit outside with a cigar and Cognac.

When Carry Nation and her ladies were swinging their axes, I am sure that drinkers demanded Ax reform.

What was Jesus’ goals in making and drinking wine, was it not enjoyment?
Obviously we should not get drunk or “intoxicated”, but we should not get too strict here.

Drinking wine was a part of celebration, as at the Wedding at Cana. However, drinking water mixed with wine was also a part of everyday life. In the days before modern microbiology, plain water was widely known to be a dangerous drink which often sickened people. People knew that mixing wine and water made water safer.
