Vatican II, a legit Council, is also infallible. No different than any other Council. You cannot reject a council. To reject Vatican II as invalid and filled with errors is no different than rejecting Trent.

You can reject what some may have made the Council out to be, but the documents in their purest form are the teachings of the Catholic Church. If you reject them, you reject the Church.
To accept the validity of “communicatio in sacris” is a rejection of a handful of previous councils, in particularly Vatican 1, which infallibly stated dogma can’t be departed from due to a “deeper understanding”. How then, do you reconcile this rejection of the Church’s infallible teaching, and blatant disregard for the 1st Vatican council?

All Councils are created equal. One is not more important than the other, as the Church is built upon the sum of the Councils. Further, Vatican II was also created to continue the work of Vatican 1, which ended abruptly.

How do I reconcile this? Perhaps I’m being simplistic in that I’m treating this like I would Canon Law. If presented by the Church with two options and there are some differences, I will take the one that is most recent. In the case of this, I’ll take what Vatican II writes and teaches infallibly until I research and understand why this is the case.

As stated in another thread around here; Dominican philosophy is “I obey - now lets study the thing to make sure we’re getting it right”, which is the track I’m taking with this. I obey the decrees set forth by Vatican II, now it’s time to find out why the decrees happened and how they fit into the tapestry of the Church.

Vatican 2 was never marked with infallibility, or set to define, or redefine, the dogma of the faith, as we can see by words of Pope Paul VI.

***Pope Paul VI, **12 January 1966:
*
In view of the pastoral nature of the Council, it avoided any extraordinary statements of dogmas endowed with the note of infallibility, but it still provided its teaching with the authority of the Ordinary Magisterium which must be accepted with docility according to the mind of the Council concerning the nature and aims of each document.

Also, before you say it was “purely Pastoral”; DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH - LUMEN GENTIUM
SOLEMNLY PROMULGATED BY HIS HOLINESS
POPE PAUL VI
ON NOVEMBER 21, 1964

Council’s General Secretary, 16 November 1964:
In view of conciliar practice and the pastoral purpose of the present council, this sacred Synod defines matters of faith or morals as binding on the Church only when the Synod itself openly declares so.

Derek was delighted to post material from Vatican I, but neglects to observe this most important declaration that was solemly defined for perpetuity:

First Vatican Council
2. Wherefore we teach and declare that,
by divine ordinance,
the Roman church possesses a pre-eminence of ordinary power over every other church, and that
this jurisdictional power of the Roman pontiff is both
episcopal and
immediate.

Both clergy and faithful,
of whatever rite and dignity,
both singly and collectively,
are bound to submit to this power by the duty of hierarchical subordination and true obedience,
and this not only in matters concerning faith and morals,
but also in those which regard the discipline and government of the church throughout the world.
The bolded part includes ALL documents of Vatican II, despite one’s looking for loopholes for disobedience.

LOL! Surely you jest, I’m not the one looking for excuses to do what has been condemned for 1600 years.
Also from the 1st Vatican council:
The Roman Pontiff, when he speaks ex cathedra, that is, when carrying out the duty of the pastor and teacher of all Christians in accord with his supreme apostolic authority he explains a doctrine of faith or morals to be held by the universal Church, through the divine assistance promised him in blessed Peter, operates with that infallibility with which the divine Redeemer wished that His Church be instructed in defining doctrine on faith and morals; and so such definitions of the Roman Pontiff from himself, but not from the consensus of the Church, are unalterable.

Also from the 1st Vatican council:
See, we’re following the most recent documents put out by Rome. So you mean to tell me the current Church, and everything a part of it since 1930 or so has been corrupted? That the gates of Hell has prevailed?

Vatican 2 failed to define anything infallibly. Vatican 1, however, was quite clear, and defined infallibly, that sacred dogma must not be altered out of a supposed deeper understanding.
It’s truly unfortunate, but Praying with heretics must be pretty important to you if you’d disobey the infallible and timeless teaching of the Church to justify doing it.

Derek Ellery:
The Roman Pontiff, when he speaks ex cathedra, …] and so such definitions of the Roman Pontiff from himself, but not from the consensus of the Church, are unalterable.
While you’re LOL-ing, do you realize the foolishness of your argument? LOL, indeed!
This refers to the Pope speaking “from himself” in an ex cathedra proclamation, and has no reference to an entire Ecumenical Council. There have only been two times in history that ex cathedra was used.

In googling your little excerpt from the Council’s Secretary, I was not at all surprised to find that just about every heretical trad website was using this as justification to spread their errors.

Of course not, but I take note at the observation of Pope Paul VI when he said on 7 December 1968: “Today the Church is going through a moment of disquiet. Some practice self criticism, one would even say auto-demolition. It is like an inner, acute and complex disturbance such as no one could have expected after the Council…”

Or the words of Pope Benedict XVI in 2005:“Should we not also think of how much Christ suffers in his own Church?.. What little faith is present behind so many theories, so many empty words! How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to him! How much pride, how much self-complacency!.. Lord, your Church often seems like a boat about to sink, a boat taking in water on every side. In your field we see more weeds than wheat…”

BXVI has also talked about certain elements within the Church who take things (such as questioning the authenticity of a Council) too far. You going to quote those?

Derek Ellery:
Vatican 2 failed to define anything infallibly.
Here’s some homework for you, Derek, to correct your misinformation.

I. Divinely Revealed
Doctrines contained in the Word of God, written or handed down, and defined with a solemn judgment of the Church as divinely revealed truths by any of the following:
a) the Roman Pontiff speaking ex cathedra
b) the College of Bishops gathered in council
c) infallibly proposed by the ordinary and universal Magisterium

First off, the idea or rumor/whatever that V2 was a “pastoral” Council is a simple lie and mistranslation/misunderstanding or twist of what John XXIII actually said.

What he actually did say at the opening of the Council was this:

John XXIII, Opening Speech at Vatican II, Oct. 11, 1962: “The substance of the ancient deposit of faith is one thing, and the way in which it is presented is another. And it is the latter that must be taken into great consideration with patience if necessary, everything being measured in the forms and proportions of a Magisterium which is predominantly pastoral in character."

John XXIII or Paul VI never said it was a pastoral council.

And even if it were, it’s irrelevant, because it nonetheless fulfilled the conditions of Infallibility. Let me show you.

Pope Pius IX, Vatican Council I, Session 4, Chap. 4:
“… the Roman Pontiff, when he speaks ex cathedra, that is, [1] **When carrying out the duty of the Pastor and teacher of all christians **[2] **In accord with his Supreme Apostolic Authority **[3] He explains a doctrine of the faith or morals to be held by the Universal Church, through the divine assistance promised him in blessed Peter, **operates with that infallibility **with which the divine Redeemer wished that His Church be instructed in defining doctrine on faith and morals; and so such definitions of the Roman Pontiff from himself, but not from the consensus of the Church, are unalterable. But if anyone presumes to contradict this definition of Ours, which may God forbid: let him be anathema."

So now let us examine if they indeed fulfill these conditions:
  1. A Pope must act as Pastor and teacher of all Christians
Each one of the 16 documents of Vatican II begins with these words:

“PAUL, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, TOGETHER WITH THE FATHERS OF THE SACRED COUNCIL FOR EVERLASTING MEMORY.”

Pope Eugene IV, Julius II and Pius IX all began their respective council sessions or the Council itself with the same words.

So Paul VI thus fulfills to act as Pastor of all the Christians.
  1. A Pope must teach in accord with his supreme apostolic
    authority
Each one of the 16 documents of V2 ends with these words:

“EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE THINGS SET FORTH IN THIS DECREE HAS WON THE CONSENT OF THE FATHERS. WE, TOO, BY THE APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY CONFERRED ON US BY CHRIST, JOIN WITH THE VENERABLE FATHERS IN APPROVING, DECREEING, AND ESTABLISHING THESE THINGS IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND WE DIRECT THAT WHAT HAS THUS BEEN ENACTED IN SYNOD BE PUBLISHED TO GOD’S GLORY… I, PAUL, BISHOP OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.”

He fulfills the 2nd requirement with this.
  1. A Pope must explain a doctrine of faith or morals to be held by
    the universal Church
He clearly says (Paul VI) that V2 is to be Religiously Observed:

Paul VI, Papal Brief declaring Council Closed, Dec. 8, 1965:
“At last all which regards the holy Ecumenical Council has, with the help of God, been accomplished and ALL THE CONSTITUTIONS, DECREES, DECLARATIONS, AND VOTES HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE DELIBERATION OF THE SYNOD AND PROMULGATED BY US. Therefore, we decided to close for all intents and purposes, WITH OUR APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY, this same Ecumenical Council called by our predecessor, Pope John XXIII, which opened October 11, 1962, and which was continued by us after his death. WE DECIDE MOREOVER THAT ALL THAT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED SYNODALLY IS TO BE RELIGIOUSLY OBSERVED BY ALL THE FAITHFUL, for the glory of God and the dignity of the Church… WE HAVE APPROVED AND ESTABLISHED THESE THINGS, DECREEING THAT THE PRESENT LETTERS ARE AND REMAIN STABLE AND VALID, AND ARE TO HAVE LEGAL EFFECTIVENESS, so that they be disseminated and obtain full and complete effect, and so that they may be fully convalidated by those whom they concern or may concern now and in the future; and so that, as it be judged and described, ALL EFFORTS CONTRARY TO THESE THINGS BY WHOEVER OR WHATEVER AUTHORITY, KNOWINGLY OR IN IGNORANCE, BE INVALID AND WORTHLESS FROM NOW ON. Given at Rome, at St. Peter’s, under the [seal of the] ring of the fisherman, December 8… the year 1965, the third year of our Pontificate.”

And that sums up the third condition.

But it is not an area of faith and morals. If so, then everybody who said that Vatican II addressed no area of faith in morals is mistaken. It can not be both ways at the same time. Freedom of religion can not be an area of faith and morals up until Vatican II and then suddenly cease being an area of faith and morals. If it is an area of faith and morals, then Vatican II did address this area of faith in morals and therefore was more than just a pastoral council.

In googling your little excerpt from the Council’s Secretary, I was not at all surprised to find that just about every heretical trad website was using this as justification to spread their errors.
So Vatican 1 was in error when it infallibly stated that sacred dogma must never be tampered with? The incoherence of your position is astounding.
Vatican 2 never defined anything, Vatican 1 did, taken with this, and the 1900 years of Tradition the Church possess it should be fairly clear to anybody where the error lies, and it’s not with the Church’s sacred Traditions, nor those who adhere to them.

Then explain the documents the last 40 - 50 years. Explain Vatican II. Explain how the Church, and those who safe guarded it, have erred. Explained why Christ Jesus would have allowed this to happen.

Why don’t you?

Pope Pius IX, First Vatican Council, Sess. 3, Chap. 2 on Revelation, 1870, ex cathedra:

The Holy Roman Church has declared “communicatio in sacris” is, and always has been, forbidden. Vatican 2 didn’t seek to redefine, nor could it have, this timelessly infallible teaching.
Please provide the quote from the document.

Just because he is not speaking ex cathedra, doea not mean we are not obliged to follow:

Derek, As I noted in your “meet and greet” statement how adamant you are with regard to ecumenism, I am expending way too much energy at this point, for I truly believe you are closed completely to any opinions other than your own misconceptions.

Have a good day - I’m withdrawing.

As in my “meet and great” post, I am closed completely to the novel heresies that contradict the timeless, infallible, teaching of the Holy Roman Church.

Another question; can you attend Protestant weddings or Protestant Funerals?

Could my wife attend her mother’s Protestant funeral?
