Conservatives at odds with Vatican over condoms

I am not sure if the Pope is going to clarify this.
Eventually, he will make some statement reinforcing the consistent teaching of the Church regarding artificial birth control. It may not be a direct clarification of the current statement, but it will straighten everything out…and drive the progressive/heterodox Catholics nuts. 🙂

Here is the quote that has drawn so much attention:
There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants. But it is not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality.
This is exactly how the quote is being presented in the media, and it leaves out the key portion right after this, when the Pope is specifically asked if the Catholic Church is not opposed to condoms, he replies:
She of course does not regard it as a real or moral solution, but, in this or that case, there can be nonetheless, in the intention of reducing the risk of infection, a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way, of living sexuality.”
So no, condoms are not being presented as suddenly moral in certain circumstances. The Pope is simply pointing out that in some specific circumstances they show a movement towards moral concern. He flat out says that they’re not a moral solution, yet people are falling all over themselves over this. 🤷

There’s not even a crack in saying that condoms are “justified”, at least not in the Pope’s words here, because he flat out says they’re not a moral solution. 😛

Peace and God bless!

Nonsense. The words “conservative” and “liberal” have broader meanings than simply describing secular political orientation.

Some Catholics (conservatives) will favor the Church doing things as traditionally as possible, others (liberals) will favor newer or different approaches. This doesn’t have to touch on Church teaching, although in some cases it might.
Those aren’t “conservative” Catholics, those are traditionalist Catholics. The others are non-traditionalist Catholics.

Otherwise, conservative and liberal come to mean nothing except whatever the particular poster wants them to mean.

You stick to conservative and liberal if you like; I’ll opt for orthodox and heterodox.

In many cases an objective or at least widely agreed upon categorization can be applied. That this is not always true is hardly reason to avoid the word; the same can be said of “traditional” or even “conservative” in the political sense.
Rich Olszewski:
You stick to conservative and liberal if you like; I’ll opt for orthodox and heterodox.
Unfortunately, the terms often have different meanings.
Doing things “traditionally” vs. “newer or different approaches” must still fall into acceptable or not acceptable by the rules of the Catholic Church.
Yes, although suggesting a change in those rules is often acceptable as well.
Los Angeles:
Recieving Holy Communion by the tounge is acceptable and so is recieving Holy Communion by the hand.
Yes.
Los Angeles:
Neither is more conservative or liberal than the other, they are both acceptable by the rules of the Catholic Church.
That’s probably a fair statement, since both have been approved and practiced for over 30 years now. However, a similar example would be the use of a straw for communion. Its use in viaticum has been approved for many years, so there would certainly be nothing heterodox in suggesting a loosening of current rules to allow routine use in distributing communion during mass. Such a suggestion would however be a rather bold move, and most Catholics would probably take a conservative position that this sort of change would be bizarre and unnecessary.

It is this generic sense of “conservative” that the article is using when it describes those who oppose saying anything at all positive about condoms. It is not identifying such people as members of the Conservative Party.

Right. Conservative and liberal are political terms - hence liberal or conservative media or parties, but we are either orthodox or heterodox as Catholics. An orthodox Catholic can be politically conservative or liberal, and one who is heterodox can also be the same.
Yeah. I beleive that to be true.

It is not the condom per se that is the problem. As I child I noted the presence of condoms in the washroom of theatres, and noted that they read “for health purposes only.” Ironically, if their use were limited to this, they would be a tolerable evil, limited to keeping men from catching diseases from whores and loose women. The greater evil, it seems to me, is the lie that diseases like AIDS can be stopped by the dispersal of millions upon millions of condoms. In a way it is like the difference between toleration of the age old practice of prostitution and the insane reduction of sex to a kind of drug and one totally unrelated to reproduction. Worse than the condom, of course, is the pill Might as well give a cynanide pill to every one, with instructions to take it if you get tired of life. The birth dearth is going to kill the human race
Condoms can not stop HIV/AIDS. They have a 15% failure rate.

The FDA requirements say that no more than one condom in 250 can fail a leakage test.[10] Do the math: When the United States donated eight hundred million condoms to developing nations in 1990, the condom companies could have included 3.2 million defective condoms in the batch! But it gets worse: Globally those who promote “safe sex” say that the world needs twenty-four billion condoms every year in order to be protected.[11] If they had their wish, and each government ensured that condoms were at least as reliable as those produced in America (which they are not),[12] there could be ninety-six million defective condoms being used every year.

"NEW YORK – Faced with a changing outlook from Pope Benedict XVI on condoms and their role in preventing the spread of HIV, many prominent conservative Roman Catholics in the U.S. are rejecting the Vatican’s own explanation of what the pope said.

“Several orthodox Catholics said they would only accept a more formal papal pronouncement. Others insisted that journalists were purposely misrepresenting Benedict’s comments. Some questioned whether the papal spokesman, the Rev. Frederico Lombardi, accurately quoted the pope.”

The Drama…

The Pope has made no changes to doctrine and condoms are still intrinsically evil. Why do people complicate matters so.

The big problem here is that the world has taking this on another direction. and so many would even try to find out the truth because this is just what they want to hear and they block out everything else. Plus the name of the Book doesnt help either.

I submit that the writer of the article by the Associated Press either does not understand that Catholic Church cannot be sub-divided into conservative or liberal groups (by intent to keep rules or change rules, or otherwise) or worse yet, is trying to create division among Catholics by referring to those that know that the personal views of the Pope are not official Catholic teaching vs. those that think that the Pope’s personal views are offical Catholic teaching.

If anything I have said is against the Catholic Church, let it be anathema.

The writer doesn’t understand it because it isn’t true. Any group can be subdivided into smaller groups. My family can be subdivided into those who are more conservative and those who are more liberal in the quantity of toppngs they apply to homemade pizza. My parish can be subdivided into groups based on which mass times they prefer to attend. My diocese can be divided into those who prefer the old bishop, and those that prefer the new one. And Catholics throughout the world can be divided into those who deeply believe that nothing positive should ever be said about condoms, and those who don’t feel as strongly against them.

Since a very small chunk of the population reads the news anymore, I doubt the reporter deludes himself into thinking he has that kind of power. I hope few members here are deluded by that thought.

Indeed ! When you are Catholic in name only, there will be many divisions ! When all accept Catholic teaching, all truth, { including all bishops} then a unity will be had as never been seen and Jesus prayer will be understood . Truth cannot be subdivided no matter your personal moniker.

The ban on condoms is still in force. The Pope was simply saying that when a grave sinner begins to consider the wellfare of others, that is a good thing. In other words, people who willing enter into grave sin who do not want to harm another person has at least some hope at redemption, they are not completely lost.

The Catholic ban on condoms has not changed even the slightest.

In any case, the assumption is that men are going to use the condoms. Many men find them an intolerable limitation on their pleasure.

It is a bit like “rules of war.” War is all violence, and any limitation on it is a moral advance. The cause of all this commotion about what the pope said is that each side has made the condom into a symbol. For many liberals, the gun is a symbol. The reality is that the guns is designed to kill/maim. The atomic bomb is designed to kill and maim perhaps millions. The task before us is to limit their use, because we can’t “Uninvent” them. And in order to do this we must go to the intention of the human beings who might use them. We must somehow persuade them that they ought not ever to be used. The problem being that Cain did not have to use a weapon to kill Abel.

A handgun was designed for the purpose of killing, and Sam Colt made his for the TexasRangers so that the Rangers could win their fights with the Apache and Comanches. This helped the Rangers who up to then had to depend on a single-shot pistol/rifle/shotgun.
A condum is just a thing. We know they were designed to keep whores from getting pregnant/catching diseases. Given that in the 19th Century, the death rate among whores --usually young girls forced into prostitution, the use of the condom was a kind of moral advance. On the other hand, to introduce it into the family household is something else, because by analogy, it reduces the relationshio between man and wife to something like that between whore and client.

The Pope has not advocated condom use. He has said that condoms are not the solution. The subject in the interview was actually on morality, not on condoms.
You obviously haven’t read my post which you just quoted entirely. If you do, you will see that I addressed ***only the Morality ***of the issue and the intention. I did not even mention condoms once in my entire post.
