We have to agree there are issues where one cannot compromise, abortion is the main one. There is no compromise which I can keep my integrity as a Catholic. I shall go down alone and fighting is need be.One can work out compromise to ensure your moral values, as well as those of others who may disagree, are all protected. It’s far from easy since liberals can be just as intransigent as conservatives. But negotiation in times of peace and war is the only lasting solution to solving problems. If one prefers continual fighting, however, that can also be arranged by refusing to negotiate.
I agree. Again, reasonable people, whether conservative, centrist, or liberal, can work this out. We need both tax increases and spending cuts to make inroads in the deficit and get our economy back on track. However, I believe we also need economic growth and investment and that usually doesn’t fit so well with either tax increases or spending cuts, or does it?I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we are all going to take a hit if we hope to regain a sound economic footing. That’s why I support tax increases AND spending cuts. Ten percent is doable.
John
There is no way you will get any democrat to agree to a 10% cut in any department or spending program except defense. There would be very few who would sign on th e1% cut that the Penny plan suggested. Now remeber I am referring to actual cuts, not decreases in increases.I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we are all going to take a hit if we hope to regain a sound economic footing. If people really understood conservatism, many of those “fence sitters” (many calling them-The remainder identified as 25% conservative and 35% liberal…so 75% would approve of compromise
Obama made what he thought was a compromise. There are some things uncompromisable with the Catholic Church. Yet he has Catholic HHS and Catholic Biden pushing this mandate. None of these three are capable of “getting it.” Many Catholics aren’t capable of understanding it. But that does not mean that it is not the Teaching of the Church. Obama should be dialoging with the USCCB, not Sebelius or Biden.I believe the Obama administration has offered what it thought to be a compromise on the HHS mandate, but it did not go far enough. This is where negotiations come in, difficult as they may be. Our country has had even bigger fish to fry, such as bringing the North and the South together after the Civil War (or The War between the States, as Southerners prefer to call it), the Carter administration’s–one of its few singular achievements–Camp David Accords, and Reagan’s peace talks with Gorbachev. It takes some willingness on both sides to sit down and talk, with a mediator perhaps. I know Obama is stubborn but so were Sadat and Begin.
I disagree…there are those among us who sit firmly in the middle on fiscal policy and social issues, and we’re tired of the absolutists on both sides gumming up the works. If people really understood conservatism, many of those “fence sitters” (many calling them-
selves moderate) would either step over to it, or fully away to the liberal camp. In dealing
with some moderates, or some who call themselves “independents” generally this is what
I have found.
Sorry, you said it first. We have to agree there are issues where one cannot compromise, abortion is the main one. There is no compromise which I can keep my integrity as a Catholic. I shall go down alone and fighting is need be.
Obama and the Dems could have in the first 2 years of his presidency and they didn’tThey’ll never do it.
Have to disagree with you here.Another one, some abortion is bad, but the death penalty in this country is okay? No they are not equal in importance as far as intrinsic evil titles are concerned; but no one here in the USA can provide a situation where the DP is needed. We have the means to protect the sanctity of life, no matter how hideous we find that life. This is what God is asking us to do, protect the least of those among us.
I admire your willingness to compromise and it does sound fair.No cuts, no tax increase.
I agree that Akin or whatever his name is made a large blunder in how he stated his position, regardless of how true his statement may or may not have been.Yes there were some Tea Party/Republican canidates who lost this election cycle, but not for being too conservative. I don’t know why canidates are not prepared for a question on abortion with a good solid answer?
Q: “Do you support abortion in the case of rape/incest.”
A: “I believe in the sanctity of life, and that life begins at conception. I do not approve of the murder of unborn children in the womb of the mother. Where as our President approves of later term abortion and not providing help to babies who survive abortion, I find that to be a radical stance.”
I’m hopeful…I think a great deal of pressure is on both parties to get something done. We need to carpet-bomb our representatives offices with emails stating our disgust with inaction. The way I’m doing it is to write one letter to President Obama and cc all of my elected federal representatives, Glenn Thompson (R), Pat Toomey (R), and Bob Casey (D).I admire your willingness to compromise and it does sound fair.
But, in reality, I cannot imagine any currently elected Democrat voting to cut anything other than defense, which is only one piece of the pie. Even if we reduced defense spending to $0, we would still be in a world of hurt.
Also, the current Democrats are all up in arms over the Ryan Budget which tries to limit the increases in programs.
I can’t say that I blame the Republicans for staying firm in their camp, because of this.
Yes, for starters, legislation should be enacted to make sure gay marriage is not coupled with coercing churches, synagogues, mosques, or temples opposed to same-sex marriage to marry couples in religious ceremonies or church settings. Also, compulsory gay adoption from Catholic agencies which are morally and religiously opposed to gay marriage should be banned. For me, this is an issue of religious liberty. Otherwise, allow gay marriage for those gays who want it. One should not legislate morality for the whole society on this issue, in my view. If one wishes to do so, then adultery and premarital sex should also be illegal.Yes, I appreciate that and wasn’t referring to your position specifically. Yet the Democratic Party has made such issues–social issues really–their own litmust test. Could a Democrat be in a leadership position without having an extreme liberal position on abortion and gay marriage?
Cannot disagree with anything you write here. But you must also agree that in almost every case in the USA with our resources we can safely house these people and keep society safe from them, so therefore except for the rarest of cases CP is not needed.Have to disagree with you here.
What about prisoners already serving life sentences who kill other inmates or guards? Or who order murders outside of prison (gang bosses)?
Without the death penalty, there is no way to deter a prisoner already serving life.
The Church has always held the death penalty is permissible, and a pridential judgement of the competent governing authorities.
God Bless,
Arthur
It is true Akin made a blunder, much like everyone does. But his blunder was repeated almost daily on NPR, even as the Benghazi email affair broke on Fox News. No mention of Benghazi for that entire week., but Akin’s misstep was repeated every single day.I agree that Akin or whatever his name is made a large blunder in how he stated his position, regardless of how true his statement may or may not have been.
I think for the next elections, Republican/Conservative canidates need to practice the answer you stated above.

I really don’t know how we can overcome an electorate which makes its decisions based on which news outlet makes the biggest noise. Perhaps there should be an exam before being able to register.
