***Mea Culpa ***(I can’t believe I’m about to do this…:banghead
My experience with spanking was normal, until the beginning of last year. I pled guilty to Domestic Assault and Battery of a Minor, for spanking my school-aged child. I was honest with CPS, and never claimed to have done nothing wrong. I had no record, but the state would not even consider a first offender plea-deal. I took the classes voluntarily and did everything the state wanted to see. I spent two days in jail, and have 3 years probation.
Lawyers throughout the process advised me “the state wants this generation to be the last that is spanked”. Sometime in the future, the goal will be for all spanking to be legally labeled child abuse and be prosecuted as such. In some states, the law says that the state does not need the cooperation of the family to charge a case.
Now, I don’t spank my kids. We’re all used to it now, but if I were ever tempted to, I would go to jail for another 88 days if I did. Even when my probation is complete, my thought process will probably not allow me to even think it. My view on the idea of spanking has not changed, but I know I cannot be trusted with the decision. Some things are not worth risking. My security clearance was flagged, and recertified, based on my honesty. I kept my job, and I kept my family. I deserve everthing else that happened. Suffice it to say that I am not the same person that I was a year ago. I have several more years of parenting to go and 6 kids to share them with. I cannot complain.
Why am I throwing this out there? Be careful. Society feels entitled to tell parents how to raise their kids, especially Catholic, home-schooling, conservative, traditional families.
