Critics Taunt Dr. Anthony Fauci for Watching Baseball Game Without a Mask

The subjects of the photo are providing an example.
It was Brietbart that added the text about critics of Fauci and published the picture. It is Breitbart that is responsible for undermining public compliance. It is not that much different than my hypothetical British newspaper undermining public compliance with the blackout in 1939. Very irresponsible.
You sure? I know in Alabama they closed public parks.
Yes, the parks are closed, but there is no directive saying you much wear a mask in those parks. If you think about it a minute you can easily find other reasons for closing the parks. Think about drinking fountains and bathrooms.

This is gotcha culture at its best.

He said he was drinking, and he tested negative the day before.

The two men who cut my neighbor’s lawn yesterday were wearing masks. One cut the front yard, the other the back, about 100 feet apart in a suburban neighborhood. What they really needed was hearing protection.

Even I’m not mandated to do that! Doing physical labor while wearing a mask isn’t good.

I always wear hearing protection though 🤓

I did not wear a mask when I cut my own lawn yesterday because it is dangerous to use power equipment when the mask makes by glasses fog up. I did use an electric mower which is much quieter than the big commercial gas mowers.

For similar reasons, the players in a professional baseball game do not wear their masks while facing a 98 mph fastball. They do wear them in the dugout. Common sense is so rare these days.

The real problem with this Breitbart posting is that it undermines public compliance with public health directives by downplaying the difference between being outdoors with a couple of close friends and being indoors around many unrelated people.
So you are suggesting the bad example by Fauci is Breitbart’s fault for reporting on it? Really??

RolandThompsonGunner . . .
I’m saying that’s another example of a situation in which social distancing doesn’t apply.
So says you.

And I anticipated this objection.

Which is exactly WHY I put a reasonable approximation of the signs that you see in businesses.
Remember to social distance! 6 feet!!
Here it is again.

And you agreed with me.

Now your proverbial Nats stadium sign morphs into . . .
Keep your social distance. 6 feet! Unless you thin you
are another example of a situation in which social distancing doesn’t apply.
And I am saying this business amost for sure does not have the directives you have made up.

He COULD just sit 6 feet apart from his friends.

The stadium was empty.

But he didn’t.

And I am OK with him breaking these unscientific political rules.

My issue here, is that affirmation of appropriate exceptions (that Fauci thinks, and you think), be extended to EVERYBODY.

And until it is, I will contiue to call out the hypocrisy on these UNSCIENTIFIC mandates that get applied selectively.

I can’t keep going around on this. You’re missing the point because you’re insisting on a hyper-literal interpretation of social distancing that no one actually endorses. You think if a parent takes his five year old to lunch at a place that says “remember, six feet apart” that anyone is going to expect the parent to sit at a table alone six feet away from his child?

Of course not. You’re so eager to point out what you think is hypocrisy (because he’s today’s target of the Breitbart Rage Factory) that you’re deliberately creating a false intrepretation of social distancing requirements.

Whatever flips your cookie, I guess. Gonna mute this one.

But public health officials do think there is a significant contrast between the two, so much so that the directives only apply to indoors.
Then I’d say the official are unwise in this regard, because activities cannot be categorized so broadly in terms of risk. Sitting for hours seated next to people, mouths and noses quite close, is risky,. To ignore it because one can categorize it in some way is hurting the effort.

“Oh ho ho, I heard Fauci sleeps in the same bed as his wife! Hypocrite! They should sleep in two beds six feet apart! These elites think they’re exempt from the rules!”

I’m saying it was not a “bad example” except for the spin put on it by Breitbart. Don’t fall for it. Listen to public health directives and follow them.

Breitbart did not pose for the picture. Fauci did.
If you want to critique the example it provides, it is properly directed at those taking the actions.
Not those that call attention to it.
It is not that much different than my hypothetical…
Oh look, another straw man…
Wait, sorry it is the same one.

Why make a directive about a mask in a park when people are not allowed in the park at all?

No, it would hurt the effort by treating all social systems exactly the same. If the public health guidance said that people should wear masks all the time when in public, even when outdoors, the public would see that as unnecessarily burdensome and would disregard all of it. Public health officials wisely set limits as minimally as possible so as to maximize compliance.

Agreed. The only issue is the lopsided way the media treats this.
If the man doesn’t want to wear a mask, he should not have to.
He said he was drinking, and he tested negative the day before.
I have been excoriated in other threads for that logic.
Apparently one cannot know from one day to the next if they have it. Tests count for little more than an immediate snapshot.

In fairness, Fauci replied thusly:

"But Fauci rejected social media criticism as “mischievous” in a Fox News interview.

“I had my mask around my chin. I had taken it down. I was totally dehydrated and I was drinking water, trying to rehydrate myself,” Fauci insisted. “And by the way, I was negative COVID literally the day before. So I guess people want to make a big event. I wear a mask all the time when I’m outside. To pull it down to take some sips of water and put it back up again, I guess if people want to make something about that, they can. But to me, I think that’s just mischievous.”

You do want to be fair, right?

My point remains that the public health directives on masks are for indoors only.
I wasn’t trying to trap you.
I just believe it would be good for you to post the directives in affect for the ballpark Fauci was in.
We can all reference it instead of talking past one another.
