Critics Taunt Dr. Anthony Fauci for Watching Baseball Game Without a Mask

No, it would hurt the effort by treating all social systems exactly the same. If the public health guidance said that people should wear masks all the time when in public, even when outdoors, the public would see that as unnecessarily burdensome and would disregard all of it. Public health officials wisely set limits as minimally as possible so as to maximize compliance.
The absence of a roof doesn’t suffice if you’re sitting side by side chatting and laughing for hours, with your mask off now and then.

If our particular society will not comply with any more than minimal directives, it suggests that the stadiums, bars, protests, etc. be suspended.

I just believe it would be good for you to post the directives in affect for the ballpark Fauci was in.
No, that is Breitbart’s job. However you can bet your last MAGA hat that if those directives were in any way violated by Fauci, Breitbart would have included that fact in the headline!

Are you offering your own personal infectious disease advice as somehow more dependable than the team of professional medical experts who make up the NIH and CDC? I know I have said it before, but it bears repeating that we are seeing a widespread anti-science and anti-expert thinking running through parts of society, if any Internet blogger’s opinion on technical medical matters is just as likely to be valid as those experts.

“I had my mask around my chin. I had taken it down. I was totally dehydrated and I was drinking water, trying to rehydrate myself,” Fauci insisted. “And by the way, I was negative COVID literally the day before. So I guess people want to make a big event. I wear a mask all the time when I’m outside. To pull it down to take some sips of water and put it back up again, I guess if people want to make something about that, they can. But to me, I think that’s just mischievous.”
The mischief is making a false excuse. He’s clearly using his cellphone, not a water bottle. I don’t care one way or the other about him as a public figure, and don’t even think this is really news, but in this instance, he’s telling, at best, a little white lie.

In this limited regard, you might say so. Their directives may need some tuning. In general, though, I’m with you on depending on the NIH and CDC.

Do you suggest they need not follow the mandated they helped set in place?

I can’t keep going around on this. You’re missing the point because you’re insisting on a hyper-literal interpretation of social distancing that no one actually endorses.
No I’m not.

I am fine with EVERYONE having a NON-literal hyperinterpretation.

What I have an issue with is a hyperliteral interpretation for “commoners” and
a non-hyperliteral interpretation for elites.

One way or the other.

Then decide and EVERYBODY has the same expectations.

If Fauci and his buddy and his buddie’s wife
(“The other person is a very close friend of mine.”) get to be re-classified as a “close-contact” at Fauci’s discretion,
EVERYONE ought to have those SAME “discretionary” decision-making powers.

There is no “infectious disease advice as somehow more dependable” here.

The mask madate is a political mandate disguised as “science”.

Now more and more people are becoming aware that there is NOT ONE randomized propspective study that purports mask-mandating in society is going to effectively combat corona virus infection.

Not a single one.

I am disappointed in your
rapid abandonment of science
after you made such elevated demands concerning hydroxychloriquine data prior to usage in corona virus management.

What we see in this post is the elevation of the armchair scientist’s ability to properly assess the state of research in the specialized field of infectious disease above the assessment of the experts whose advice you can see here:

Don’t be misled by the date. This article was updated on July 16th, so it is current information.

First paragraph of my post I said he seated with two people.

There are no other people around.

No denial.

There are no fans at baseball games currently.

You changed my premise.

I didn’t ask for experts “advice”.

I asked for scientific data.

The mask-mandate is political Leaf.
It is politics disguised as “science”.

Masks will never pan out, at least the way they are used in society right now (below the nose, sometimes on the chin, hanging from an ear, re-breathing through runnny-nose-laden masks, fiddling around with “germ-repositories” also known as “masks”, looking the other way on mask mandates for leftists rioting, etc.

It is politics Leaf.

Mask mandates are political.

He asks for scientific data…you reply back with anything but…and it is somehow his fault?
If it wasn’t my fault someone else would just say it is “Trump’s fault”.

There is no scientific data supporting mask mandates.

None.

Mask mandates are a political weapon. At least so far.

Listen to public health directives and follow them.
“Directives” based on science?

Or should we just be “good citizens” and obey flippant political opinions too?

I wasn’t referring to you specifically… just a general comment. there is no shortage of people who are in denial that a pandemic even exists.

@vz71, @Cathoholic, perhaps my short answer was just too short. Here is what I mean. The fact that you eschew expert advice and instead seek to figure out the medical truth yourself based on your ability (or my ability, for that matter) to properly assess the field of research involved and interpret said research is the mistake. We already have the expert assessment of the medical truth in this regard. They have done the work for you, and much better, I might add, than either you or I could do. Therefore if there is a discrepancy between the expert assessment of the state of medical knowledge and my analysis of the same, based on what I can find on Google, or by asking various random Internet bloggers, then the smart thing to do is to accept the possibility that my assessment (and yours) is faulty and theirs is right. The chances of an armchair observer realizing some technical truth that is simultaneously missed by the whole team of experts at the CDC is infinitesimal. On the other hand, the chances of your or I misinterpretting what we find on the Internet is huge. That is why I say it was your mistake to ignore the expert analysis and insist that only primary data will satisfy you, and in the meantime, you wish to adopt a view contrary to those experts. Is that clear now?
