I’ve been hearing that practicing yoga can be an open door to the occult. I understand that yoga studios usually encourage “spiritual enlightenment” and entering “an altered state of consciousness”. Can a Catholic in their own home practice yoga strictly for the physical benefits ie physical therapy while rejecting the Hindu spirituality?

Yes, you can practice yoga - either at home or in a class

I’m terribly sorry, but we must now suspend you for 1 million years because you have mentioned yoga. 🤧

Speaking of yoga, I haven’t done it even once in 2018 because of so much other stuff going on. 😶 I need to fix that. St Thomas Aquinas went into detail in the Summa Theologica about the benefits of a rigorous Youtube yoga routine.

Again I’ll refrain from speaking my mind as much as I can

I can’t fathom the _______ involved in thinking that yoga of all things is somehow nefarious.

It has proven benefits for physical health, which unsurprisingly enough benefits the mind - an organ supported and nourished by? oh right! The body

There’s a good reason many members of the Asian elderly community are out doing fitness in the park whilst western equivalents are homebound or racked with arthritis.

If you want to take care of yourself and live a longer life, correct yoga practise can improve breathing, joint strength and co-ordination.

If you want to be stubborn, you can often enjoy gruelling joint pain/inflammation and worse as you age.

Please resist commenting on things if you aren’t qualified because? Right. It further drives the youth away from the church and empties pews everywhere.

There’s nothing wrong with opinions; but heaven help us. They SHOULD be founded in scientific study, academic research and reason.

Not superstitious gobbledegook.

The meditation that goes with it. Unfortunately it is not always ‘just stretching’ as some wish it to be, if it were just stretching, well, they’d be just stretching, wouldn’t need to call it ‘yoga’.

OP, I would find other avenues for exercise (which there are many) which are not as questionable as yoga, better safe then sorry IMO. Yoga varies a lot, but generally if it’s just stretching, then they are not that deeply into it.

It’s similar to some kinds of martial arts, if it’s simply combat maneuvers it’s fine, but often times when they get right into it, these martial arts have codes of honor type stuff etc which comes with it’s own morality divorced from the Church.

In the same way, when it comes to yoga, when it goes into their mediation side of things, your in dangerous waters IMO.

God Bless

Thank you for reading.

No offense, OP, but do we really need another discussion of this? They never end well.

Wow, just discovered the ultimative CAF thread- is IT a mortal sin to do do yoga in tight pants with a veil on my head and still ne a submissive wife? 😑

There have been many other threads, those who love yoga will not give it up.

At a democratic pro choice anti gun clown Mass with a woman deacon, using altar rails, with a divorced and remarried Catholic recciving Communion and LGBTQ vespers after

yeah, and of course on the parking area of a SSPX chapel where we hear catholic rap music.

Even the little army men I used to play with as a kid are doing yoga! Is no one safe from this scourge?

You guys are hilarious.

Where can I buy the yoga army men? I need to switch up the rotating art installation in my living room shrine to St. Marcel Lefebvre.

Just as those who don’t will insist a stretch is worshiping a false god. I’m pretty sure the way I’m sitting as I type this is some kind of yoga position…and even without intent, I’m apparently paying homage to some Hindu deity.
I google imaged and found a picture of the chair pose:

Sorry mate. Stick a fork in you. You’re done.

I consider yoga to be on a similar plane as centering prayer. It has no roots in Christianity and could therefore be dangerous.

Yoga IS a religious meditation. An Eastern one. You can stretch, but I’d be wary of taking any classes on it.

Doing the poses is not going to harm you, but that’s just stretching. Not yoga. Yoga is spiritual.

If we would bann everything healthy just because the wrong religion has helped developping it centuries ago we would be in very bad condition.

surgery? No way the ancient egyptians did it, and this highly connected with pagan rites.
vinegar against infections? no, the zoroastrian persians used to do so.
