Dating a non-virgin: Yes or no.

Honestly, I don’t think it should even be a factor. As long as they are presently committed to chastity (and you’ll know if they are) there’s no point in bringing it up unless they do. However, I think it’s definitely a plus for a couple to get tested before they marry, just to make sure nothing’s amiss. Even if one or both are virgins, it’s a nice courtesy.
Well I wouldn’t think you need to get tested if you’re a virgin. But I agree with your point.

I do see how it could cause jealousy issues. But I think if two people love each other and are now committed to a chaste and prayerful life then it it’s overcomeable.

It doesn’t really tell you anything about self control as self control is a virtue that is built and strengthened with time and practice. So it may tell you that they had less self control at some point in the past but nothing really about the present. As for STD’s, well, that’s the kind of thing that you need to reveal if the relationship gets serious. But I guess I’m talking here about the complete unwillingness to date a person who isn’t a virgin once you learn that fact, even if you know that they are living a chaste life now. (Even if you’ve had a few dates and like them/are attracted to them). I would argue that that is shallow.
So the pitch is that if you’ve been dating someone and hitting it off rock solid. But then find out 5 years ago she had a fling with a guy on a motor bike. But now she’s good and done with that. Is that a deal breaker? Yes = shallow, no = deep?

Well let me switch that up a bit.

If you’ve been fed a staple diet of sex-before-marriage-is-the-worst-thing-on-earth. And you meet and hit it off with someone. Then find out they did the deed. Worst thing on earth stuff. Is making that a deal breaker a shallow answer? Or is it maybe a deep touch of reaction-type rejection? I mean like finding out the guy once looked long and hard at a porn shot. But doesn’t do that anymore. So he’s good and cured now right?

Or is there maybe a hint of doubt now that that person can hold to the path they’re on. Because they’ve already let go of the wheel once before.

I mean this is all hypothetical. Because I’m no lily.

But I know how I used to be. And shallow wasn’t one of the suits that fit me.

So I do understand the thinking. And do realize it was very focused on something that I’d argue actually backfired in the end. So I’m just exploring thoughts. Not holding to any judgements here. Because I’d come out on the bottom on that scorecard. There’s no way I could be in that camp now.

Well I wouldn’t think you need to get tested if you’re a virgin.

If both people get tested, it’s a precaution. If one person gets tested at the request of their partner, it’s a subtle accusation. I agree that there’s no need for a virgin, but it does build trust.

Well, I would argue that the “sex-before-marriage is the worst thing ever” attitude is contrary to Catholic teaching. It’s certainly sinful, but you can’t single out one sin and demonise anyone who has ever committed that sin. Jesus Christ never said to the adulterous woman “Go and sin no more, and by the way, you’re a slut and don’t deserve to be loved.”

I doesn’t take into account how God can work on a person through grace and the sacraments and how a person can repent and change. Sure maybe there’s fear that they’ll do it again or something like that, but you should be able to judge by their actions now what kind of person they are.

:confused::confused::confused:

How do you know these things? How do you meet a girl and track down her exes?

Also, I’m totally stealing ‘Broseph McProte(name removed by moderator)owder’ because it’s funny and brings my BIL to mind. Although, he’s an extremely devout Catholic and refuses to even give the impression of sleeping with his girlfriend. There are also guys like Russell Wilson and Tim Tebow out there. I’m not sure you can judge someone’s morality based on how attractive they are.
I kept a handy hook-up flowchart to keep track of the various pairings. Doesn’t everybody do that?

Yeah. The fact is, if someone is going to completely rule out a person once you realise they’re not a virgin then I think that makes them pretty shallow. I’m not saying for a second that you shouldn’t have a general preference or that it’s better to have slept around. Absolutely not.
But if you date someone and discover on the third date that they’re not a virgin and then proceed to dump them for that reason alone, then it’s shallow.
I actually agree with this, and voted “Yes”. However, note that the way you worded your question, whether one would consider dating a non-virgin, not “do you find virginity status completely irrelevant when dating”, makes it difficult for anyone to answer “No”, unless you are speaking of someone with an extreme “I’d rather die single than marry a non-virgin” mentality. I know there are some people like that on CAF, but I really think such people are in the extreme minority.

Also, while you clarified later that by “non-virgin” you meant someone who had actually been unchaste before marriage, I do think most CAFers would consider a widower or divorcee with annulment, etc. I also can only recall one poster on CAF who stated he wouldn’t even consider a victim of rape or sexual abuse – and even that person claimed it was because he knew he couldn’t deal with the baggage of the trauma, PTSD, etc…not because he’d consider such a person to actually be guilty of unchastity or “not good enough”.

However, I also suspect that there are many people who WOULD consider a non-virgin, but also DON’T think virginity status is completely irrelevant, either. Though even they might be reluctant to post about it, for fear of being attacked.

But, I also think some of the attitudes expressed on the other topic you speak of, that even having a “general preference” was shallow, selfish, immature, etc,was also extreme. Or that sexual history is “none of your business”. (Though to be fair, that particular poster also seemed to think a financial or credit history was also “none of your business” and totally irrelevant, which I actually disagree with even more strongly than whether a sexual history is relevant).

Yet, I’d hazard a guess that if someone had been 100+ partners before marriage, depending on the context, that actually might indicate a disordered sexuality that can’t just be cured with a trip to the confessional. Indeed, as columbkille noted, there is actual research out there that suggests that it does matter.

I certainly think it’s more important what someone’s current attitude is about sex. What some of the “history doesn’t matter” crowd seem to naively ignore is that many people are NOT honest while dating. Not just in the sense of lying about the past, either. Some lie about their current beliefs, or at least minimize differences, naively believing “true love” will overcome it all.

There are cases where a sexually active person might agree to a non-sexual dating relationship, NOT because they’ve repented or changed their minds, but merely because they “respect” the values of a prospective spouse. Much like some go through the motions of a faith conversation to appease someone into marriage. Only to show their true colors after marriage. And note that Catholics do NOT hold to the “anything goes in the marriage bed” attitude that many Protestants do, and don’t see marriage as a cure for sexual sin.

I suppose one can argue that even such liars can be found out, if one dates long enough and discerns hard enough. But I just find it flies in the face of common sense that past actions aren’t at all a predictor of future ones. Unless of course you are speaking of someone who had a major conversion/repentance experience. That certainly does happen. But sometimes, it only seems to happen, or the person backslides – think of Father Corapi, for example.

Go ahead. Argue until your tongue runs dry. We’re talking about my mother here. I’ll see if I still have her number. You guys have a nice chat.

(First thing she’ll probably do is remind you she’s not Catholic.)

But wasn’t one of their actions done complete with that motor-cycle dude? I mean what action now is gonna tell me for sure they’ve moved past that? What if it’s winter and there just aren’t any more motor bikes around? 🤷

Or what if I’ve got a motorcycle?

Sorry. Couldn’t help it. 😊

That is hilarious.

I also liked your coinage upthread.

I agree with BEL that you didn’t really have enough information on Beefy Mcwhatever and his ex-girlfriends. 1) Observation suggests that big guys are often very different with their girlfriends than with male buddies (namely, big cuddly baby-talking teddy bears, not He-Men) 2) people lie about conquests and 3) people (even people with big muscles) can be surprisingly patient about physical intimacy when in the grasp of True Love.

Well, that cuts both ways.

It means that if one is going around asking, “Are you a virgin?” very early in the dating process and then discarding anybody who won’t answer or who says no, one may wind up with the following results:

–discard actual virgins who value their privacy and dignity and don’t think they should be discussing their private parts with a guy they barely know
–discard widows, divorced women with annulments, and victims of sexual assault
–wind up left with an assortment of dishonest people and actual virgins

I’m thinking of King Lear, who asks his daughters to prove which of them loves him best and then punishes the one who answers honestly. That doesn’t work out well for him…

I do know for a fact (that as BEL has also noted) that the virgin hunters on CAF and another site I read occasionally don’t seem very successful at finding brides. (I don’t simply mean people who would value virginity in a future spouse, but people who deem it the primary marital qualification and who feel entitled to immediately ask questions about sexual history. They go on and on about it, but never seem to find someone.)

Similarly, although a good income is nice for raising a family, I suspect that putting “must earn over $100k” in a personals ad would not necessarily increase the percentage of people with six figure incomes that respond or the general quality of applicants. In fact, it may scare off both high earners and good prospects with lower incomes, leaving some pretty shady characters to sift through.

I have daughters and when they get to be more independent young ladies, I am going to be very, very definite about not going around sharing sensitive personal information with people they don’t know well. A guy who is not her gynecologist or very nearly a fiance does not have any business asking about virginity and she shouldn’t be announcing her virginity any more than she should announce she’s got pockets stuffed full of cash before getting off a bus on a dark night. Also, it’s important to avoid dating people who seem fixated on particular facts about them rather than appreciating them as a whole and unique person.

Sure!

I got it from Dorothy Cummings McLean, but the ideas had been gelling for a while. DCM has just firmed up my commitment to encouraging discretion in daughters.

SHE is the woman you talk about, with respect to Seraphic Singles and Edinburg Housewife???

I have read some of her writings at other venues and never realized she is the SAME lady. She is very smart and witty.

I had no idea she had been writing in other places! Thanks for the awesome tip!👍

Yes!

Edinburgh Housewife seems to have gone private (a shame, because she had a lot of good posts there), but she’s started up a new blog here:

thehistoricalhouse.blogspot.com/

I really like her as an experienced guide to flourishing as a single Catholic lady (and the guys can learn a thing or two from her, too).

I will go slighty against the grain here.

There is a difference between someone who has been with one previous partner and someone who has been with a hundred. This isn’t just sentimentality, the correlation between number of premarital sexual partners and divorce is quite high. The Heritage Foundation has a study on this but it isn’t widely mentioned in the media, even though it implicitly contains very salient advice. Political correctness and all.
I completely agree.

Past behaviours are important, albeit they need to be seen in the context of current attitudes.

I mentioned this thread to my husband and he mentioned that being too strict would rule out St. Augustine as a spouse.

This made me laugh, because I think most ladies would be glad to rule out St. Augustine, for reasons having nothing to do with his promiscuous past or fathering a child out of wedlock. For example, he valued continence so highly and valued conjugal relations so minimally, even within their legitimate context of joy matrimony. Not exactly marriage material. 😉

I did think about similar issues with St. Augustine myself…I was thinking he might be tough to live with.

He is an interesting counter-example to the idea that past behavior is a good predictor of future behavior. His (hypothetical) bad behavior as a husband might be logically related to his sins (overreacting in the direction of strictness), but you wouldn’t be able to predict them from his sins.

That rule “past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior” is a generally helpful one. But the truth is that it does not make room for grace. So I think we must be of two minds in this area. Jesus tells us to be cunning as serpents and simple as doves. I think that is a good way to think about this. We must be aware that the stated rule is generally true, but also leave room in our minds and hearts for the working of God’s grace, which makes all things new.

That is why my own emphasis now is upon chastity, professed and lived, and a long enough courtship prior to engagement that there is hopefully time to see any red flags and to weed out the liars/pretenders. There is far less danger in a person who fell into fornication and repented and recommitted to chastity than in a person who is technically a virgin but is a regular and unrepentant user of porn and masturbation. I have been reading a lot about this issue, especially in materials by Matt Fradd, and whereas I used to be a big proponent of virginity, now I realize that is not the biggest danger in a potential spouse. And mostly I am doing all this research in order to prepare my kids for what the dating world and oversexed culture is like and arm them against it.

That should say “holy matrimony”
