If I may add something…
I am not familiar with oudave or other things he has said. But let’s be a little careful with the labels.
Seeing somebody kneeling in front of a statue can lead to some innocent misconceptions about what is going on there. It is not necessarily “anti-Catholic” to have questions about that, and be uncomfortable with it. It can be simple ignorance of what is happening.
I can understand the concern of idol-worship. In fact, I will go so far as to say that certain Catholics do not help the case. I’ll be honest, there probably are Catholics who don’t have a proper understanding that Marian devotion should be used to complement and enhance our relationship with Christ, and instead use Mary as a substitute.
The fact that some are misguided does not implicate Marian devotion at all. But we need to be forthcoming about the deficiencies of some people, because it may well be that oudave has had experience with such a person.
As many here have pointed out, the statue is simply a way of bringing us more in tune with whom we are conversing with (not worshipping). It’s a great thing. But when Dave says “I’ve seen someone do …” well, maybe he actually has. And he’s either misinterpreted the action, or the person was misguided and misrepresented our faith. Either are possible.
