Obama Rejects Rosen’s Comments on Ann Romney
President Obama strongly disagreed with Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen’s controversial comment
about Ann Romney, saying today that “there’s no tougher job than being a mom.”

“Anybody who would argue otherwise, I think, probably needs to rethink their statement,” the president told Bruce Aune of ABC’s Cedar Rapids affiliate KCRG.

Rosen sparked a political firestorm when she questioned Wednesday whether Ann Romney is qualified to gauge women’s economic concerns, claiming the mother of five has “never worked a day in her life.” The Romney campaign pounced on the comments as an opportunity to boost the GOP frontrunner’s standing among female voters, while the president’s campaign and the White House publicly distanced themselves from Rosen.

The president went a step further, suggesting candidates’ families should be off limits. “I don’t have a lot of patience for commentary about the spouses of political candidates,” he told KCRG.

“My general view is those of us who are in the public life, we’re fair game. Our families are civilians,” he said. “I haven’t met Mrs. Romney, but she seems like a very nice woman who is supportive of her family and supportive of her husband. I don’t know if she necessarily volunteered for this job so, you know, we don’t need to be directing comments at them. I think me and Governor Romney are going to have more than enough to argue about during the course of this campaign.”

How odd to hear this from Barack Obama - the same man who has not denounced once the statements from various Democrats making obscene comments about conservative women such as Sarah Palin and her children.

Right on Cue, Obama Rides in to Play the Role of the Moderate Who Loves Moms
A fairly well scripted week, even if it did create a bit more blowback than the White House wanted. It kept the campaign away from the economy, the price of gas, the unsustainable national debt, unemployment, pretty much all of the topics the administration doesn’t want discussed.
Notice he didn’t just come out and say “Hilary Rosen doesn’t speak for me.” In fact he didn’t mention her by name at all.

Many women who are stay at home mothers say it is ‘work,’ and that it has economic worth. Ann Romney said her job bringing up five children was ‘work.’

NPR: What Is Mom’s Work Worth?
This is not about the economic worth of stay at home moms, you can’t move the goal post mid game. The point of the faux outrage on the right is the idea that Rosen implied being a stay at home mom is not real work. She did not. She did however say, quite rightly, that Ann Romney has never had to make the kinds of economic decisions or faced the sort of problems that a woman with or without kids in the workforce who makes 25 grand a year at a dead end job has had to make every single day. So the idea of going to her for any information on that subject is ridiculous.

Political expediency.
To be honest, though, those hateful comments directed at Palin dealt mostly with her personality, general parenting style, her “rich and inappropriate” lifestyle, her political record, and her verbal malapropisms.

This is different. What constitutes a “working mother” concerns ALL women in this country. Even the First Lady.

Yep.

So Ann Romney can not sympathize with struggling women with or without children because her husband is wealthy? I don’t think that is true or fair. Most if all of the presidents have been wealthy, thus their wives and the rest of their family has been too. Why isn’t Hilary Rosen putting what she say on to them too? Ann Romney’s position is not unique.

If we’re going to make generalities, I believe a stay-at-home mom, who is balancing the family’s one-income budget, knows far more about economics than two-income families with more money to spend.

She would understand how a family can live on less, and offer some good advice to a country who needs to live on less.

(And I would think that a single mother would have too much sympathy for another woman struggling for her family to be critical of her.)

Apparently in Rosen’s mind, Ann Romney can NOT:
think about it
have an opinion about it
hold concerns about it
care about it
know about it
learn about it -

so how could poor Mrs. R have sympathy/empathy about it?
Hilary Rosen says A Romney could not and H Rosen has
appointed herself Speaker on the Issue.

Good luck with that, Miss Rosen.

When I am in need of relevant and accurate advice I go to those with experience and familiarity with my situation. I’d go to a chef for advice on cook, a working mechanic for advice on my car and I would go to a woman who’s put on her time in the trenches of the workplace for advice on how women struggling in the workplace feel. As shocking as it might sound, I wouldn’t go to a woman who with her husband has a net worth of $250 million and has never worked outside of her home.

Ann Romney is not a politician, she is not running for president. Hilary Rosen was responding to the fact that Mitt Romney said he seeks his wife for advice on economic issues. Just because Ann Romney was a stay at home mother does not mean she is not qualified to speak on economics. Ann raised funds for many charities. Mitt is the politician, the one with experience of running businesses, why does it matter if she ‘worked’ or not?

Class warfare at its best. That is going to be the core of the Obama campaign and it is why he is going to lose,

She raised funds for many charities, you could not do without basic knowledge of economics.

Mitt probably would not get advise from her if she was not qualified, and he probably has professional economic advisers and Mitt has his own business experience. It is not as if his wife is his only economic adviser.

The Right tries to score political points off of what Rosen didn’t actually say and the the Left predictably has a panic attack and disavows everything. This was an economic discussion. This had nothing to do with the merits of working mothers. This is about the fact that Ann Romney has never had to balance an outside of the home career with raising her kids. She’s never had to go to a boss to beg for time off. She’s never had to figure out who’s going to take care of her kids when she works overtime. She’s never had to worry about how many extra hours she’ll have to put in to pay for the recital and the field trip and the school clothes and the soccer equipment. She’s never had to worry about scrounging up cash for co-pays. And she’s never had to worry about disappointing her kids in ways large and small because work come first. She has never had to make these decisions. Why, because she’s been wealthy enough not to be forced to do so. This is not the woman you go to in a sincere effort to discover what concerns the modern day working mother. Rosen shouldn’t have apologized. She shouldn’t have even clarified. She should however have suggested those on both sides of the aisle take some classes in listening and comprehension.
Wow - Great post 👍

Ann Romney may be able to sympathize with the realities most women confront, but she cannot claim to have been tested by them herself. She has never had to figure out how to juggle more than she wanted to handle.

It makes me think of that movie “Trading Places” with Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy.

How sad that you wouldn’t go to your wife if you wanted a woman’s perspective. In strong marriages spouses turn to each other for advice. And being a woman, she meets your criteria of an expert. I’m not sure where you get the “struggling in the workplace” stuff. That’s a recent spin. Weren’t all women supposed to be covered with free contraception? Even the stay-at-home wife? So women struggling to make ends meet at home don’t count. Or in Mrs. Romney’s case, women struggling with breast cancer and MS and raising 5 sons don’t count either.

Be careful, your class envy is showing. There’s an old interview with Mrs. Romney about her early marriage where they did struggle.

Again, ripping those goal posts up and dragging 'em farther down the field.

Economics involved in raising money for a charity is worlds away from the economics and struggles of balancing a family and a career and the struggles of middle/lower class women. No one said she was his only economic advisor, even he didn’t say that but he did say she was a person he uses to advise him on what working women, middle class women, average women (whatever you want to call them) are thinking and are concerned about, a choice which couldn’t make less sense.

Too much sympathy to be critical? What exactly do you mean by that?

At last, someone willing to discuss the real issue Rosen was referencing…where have you been all day? 😉

Hear, hear! This definitely calls for a toast!

Hilary Rosen said Ann Romney about can not speak for women because she is a stay at home mother, Hilary Rosen never said what she said regarding economics in the CNN interview or in her apology. Hilary Rosen said certain lifestyle choices disqualify you from representing women in the CNN.com apology, she did not say ‘disqualify you from representing working women.’
Rosen didn’t have to say any of that because it was obvious to anyone who actually listened to the segment.

It’s a pity the election’s so close because I would otherwise have suggested that if the president joined in this apologizing over a fake issue, he should be primaried by a woman!
