Despite Catholic teachings, women religiously take the pill

It can’t be that important, else the Priests would spend countless hours preaching on that very subject. As those Priests are in the best position to plainly see all of their one and two child families that fill the seats in their Church’s.

The fact of the matter is that the absolute vast majority of Western Catholics do what they want when it comes to contraception. If the Priests drove them away, there’d be no Western Church’s…hence the relative silence.
What does any of that have to do with the teaching of the Church and the mortality of the sin? If people left the Church in droves, it wouldn’t change the Truth. The fact that many priests don’t bother to be strong about these issues, also doesn’t change the Truth. Mortal sin is mortal sin. It separates you from Christ and leads to eternal damnation. If people are okay with that, then I don’t know what to say.

If it was about the truth and not about filling pews, then there’d be decisive action in the West with regards to this very issue.

I think it’s clear that there’s decisive action regarding same sex unions, as it doesn’t affect Church attendance and that there’s no action against contraception use amongst Church goers, as it would affect Church attendance.

Okay. 🤷 Are you saying you don’t believe the teaching is true because of this lack of decisive action, or are you complaining about the lack of action? I’m not clear.

You seem to be really concerned about Church attendance…or think the Church is more concerned about it. If the Church was more concerned about it, they would have ended the teaching about contraception, abortion, female priests, etc. It’s not happening.

The only reason I care about Church attendance is that I want my brothers and sisters to all make it to heaven. Ignoring de fide teaching out of concern for attendance on earth will negatively affect the salvation of Catholics.

I’m saying that divorced, no annulment, re-married, birth control taking, 3 times a year Catholics are free to attend Church, never hear anything about " their mortal " sins and happily, blissfully and ignorantly partake of their apparently sacred Eucharist and they don’t have to worry about Christian special interest groups who fight against their lifestyle.

Yet, in this same Church, openly practicing homosexuals run the risk of being denied that same Eucharist.

It’s hypocritical…that’s my problem.

Why change the teaching when instead, just don’t mention it.

I think the point you’re missing is that priests and any Catholic for that matter, can not speculate about how the person next to them is sinning or going against Catholic teachings. That itself can be sinful. But someone that openly declares their sin, can be denied Eucharist. If someone practicing ABC publicly declares it, they too could find themselves being denied as the openly practicing homosexual.

Then, later, when the priest sex abuse scandal broke, the church ended up with extensive closure of schools and parishes, 60 in Boston alone, and several diocesan bankruptcies. The previous monolithic support of the church was gone, and the proscription of contraception helped kill it.
Actually, school and parish closures preceded the clergy scandals. Not enough Catholics supporting the parishes and schools. My children and grandson went to an excellent parish school in Brooklyn, and it was abruptly closed at the end of a semester because of lack of funds and pupils. That really hurt because the school was so good, very Catholic, etc. But, when the parish is mostly old Italians, even assessing the parents to make up shortfalls wasn’t enough. 😦

This thread is about contraception - not homosexual relations. Both are mortal sins though. The thread also isn’t about the denial of the Eucharist. Your charges of hypocrisy are boring and off-topic. There are plenty of threads about homosexuality. If that is what you are interested in, then take your anti-orthodox rants to one of those threads.

Are you trying to claim that the majority of Catholics who use birth control are ignorant of Church teaching on the subject? Seriously? That is pretty funny…

Nope, they’re well aware of the Church position. The Church is seemingly well pleased to have them fill Church seats and leave their envelopes before they leave.

It’s also very telling as to how little influence the Church actually has on its own members in the Western world.

How do you really know that though? Aren’t you generalizing? Have you polled every Catholic that uses ABC to say that for certain?

Don’t be too quick to laugh. Catechesis ain’t what it used to be.

I agree that catechesis is lacking in many places, but even non-Catholics know what the Church teaching is on birth control. 😛

I do agree that many people don’t think much about sin or Confession anymore. The more you sin and ignore the consequences, the easier it is…

If a soul decides it doesn’t want to be saved, that is their choice. Hell is never something forced on a person.
I doubt that any couple decides that they don’t want to be saved. They may know that the Church is opposed to ABC, but decide that they will use it anyway. Cafeteria Catholics perhaps - which would mean a lot of them - but there are those who don’t consider it a soul threatening action. Without any statistics to go by, I’d nevertheless think that Catholics who use ABC don’t consider it any more than venial sin. For if they really believed that it was a mortal sin and that they’re thereby hellbound, they’d not use it.

Which is kind of my entire point…WHY don’t the Priest tell them?

The difference, which can be deadly, is whether they have learned that it is a mortal sin and reject that, or if they are unaware. Deciding that something is a venial sin, when the Church teaches it’s not, does not save someone from the consequences.

But, hey, it’s only hell…why not take a chance! 😦

As a matter of fact, one of the main achievements in recent years, both in sex education and in so-called ‘feminist’ consciousness-raising is encouraging women and girls to say NO–as in, “Just say NO” and “What part of NO don’t you understand?” These and other similar expressions were promoted to encourage women and girls that it is** OK **to say NO. The woman and the woman alone decides when and IF to have sex.
And the woman gets pregnant by herself? The internet is currently the number one purveyor of pornography on the planet. Have you watched TV lately? Hook-up culture did not invent itself.

The radical feminists who are viciously anti-men and pro-abortion? Or the Sex and the City ‘female chauvenist pigs’ ?

The woman cannot and will not have sexual intercourse by herself - ever.

The radical feminists encouraged women to turn themselves into the eternal victims of the eternal enemy - men.

Sex is not the answer, love is.

God bless,
Ed

To support the opposite view. It isn’t anyone’s business but the prospective parents involved, and their medical consults if there are medical issues.

I am surprised that people are surprised that Catholics agree with the general population on this issue. Catholics, like other human beings, want only two in the bedroom, no one else. The issue on contraception drove a stake through the relationship of American (and European) Catholics with their church, which was the beginning of the end of the idea that the Catholic church can control people’s lives, as it had done in the past. American Catholics fled their previously monolithic support and took their wallets with them. Then, later, when the priest sex abuse scandal broke, the church ended up with extensive closure of schools and parishes, 60 in Boston alone, and several diocesan bankruptcies. The previous monolithic support of the church was gone, and the proscription of contraception helped kill it.
I was there when the Birth Control Pill manufacturers and the media launched their assault on Normal Human Sexuality in the late 1960s.

The Church is not interested in wallets, and God certainly isn’t. If some people think having lots of sex is more important than Church teaching, you may also notice that no priest will be knocking on your door on Monday if you miss Mass on Sunday. It’s not about the money, and no, the Church will not force you to stay, or even visit, if you don’t want to.

God bless,
Ed

A clear warning was given by Pope Paul VI in 1968, but the Hippies, pornographers, topless bar owners, adult bookstore owners and the sellers of (now cool) illegal drugs did everything they could to drown out that message. Along with the head shops and underground newspapers and comix.

As the Baby Boomers got older and decided to contracept or send their kids to public schools because Catholic schools were too “expensive,” of course they would close.

Unlikely, I’d think. Who would say, “Well, it’s a mortal sin and we’re going to hell because of it, but no matter.”
or if they are unaware.
Possibly.
Deciding that something is a venial sin, when the Church teaches it’s not, does not save someone from the consequences.
More likely IMO that they’ve decided it’s a venial sin to start with. If they’ve had poor catechesis, how would they know that the sin is mortal even though they acknowledge that it’s a sin?

They may well believe that they’re doing the right thing, that practicing birth control even with the Pill is doing right by the family they have. Numerous Protestants believe exactly that. There are Catholic and Protestant couples with 3, 4, or 5 children who used ABC, then stopped in order to have the next child. Are they going to believe whomever might dare to tell them that the way they had their children was wrong?
