Devout Catholics: Do you feel its a sin to watch Craig Ferguson?

i really like him most of the time but when he (&/or one of his guests) gets on the subject of sex, i get turned off… he makes allusions to “self-gratification”… and (I was going to be specific, but won’t)… other perversions… :hypno: uch: I try to ignore it but sometimes after watching the show, i feel somewhat … unclean.

But i gave the show another chance last night & it was very good… funnier & much cleaner… (for some reason) so anyway, i am somewhat undecided (or vacillating?) & would like to have others’ opinions. Thanks.

From what you shared, he sounds like he’s reveling in sinful behavior. He is especially offensive to Christians, especially Catholics who view that as a mortal sin. You want to help his Neilson ratings? Is he not offensive to you?

I would suggest spending time in front of the Eucharist, perhaps attending daily Mass for a while, and then ask yourself again in a week.

I’ve seen his show, and the guy is just perverted. He’s also exhibited behavior on shows that make me suspect he’s a closet homosexual.

I do not recommend this show. It’s definitely not a good thing to watch if you’re a devout Catholic.

Just like anything in the media, you have to be selective in what you watch and when. When he’s offensive, turn him off. I kinda like his show, it’s kinda goofy. When he gets gross, I turn him off.

Nielsen ratings are only affected by participating study families, not you and me (unless you participate in the Nielsen ratings program).

I watch Craig Ferguson from time to time when the kiddo keeps me up late. Sometimes he can be hilariously funny. I just turn him off when he gets crude, just like I change the channel when an inappropriate commercial comes on. Part of watching TV nowadays, I’m afraid.

I do both of these things… and as stated, he did seem to have a much “cleaner” show after that… although it still leaves something to be desired. What is really disturbing is that Letterman is also starting to tell jokes focused on the issue of sex (“performance” etc…). I gues i am getting very prudish in my old age because i almost blushed… (& i watch the show alone)… Hmm…

Yeah, i know what you mean… that is one of the creepiest things of all… I am not sure he wants to project the image of possibly being a closet homosexual… I think he just wants to get a laugh… But still, he does this so often, it can’t help but make you wonder… and keep on wondering…

I am a devout Catholic but i have to admit, i like the show except for the inappropriate stuff… I guess my question is: How much TV garbage is too much for a devout Catholic. I watch very little TV… & i know i am in no danger of losing even the smallest fragment of my belief system… So maybe someone like me can watch a little “inappropriate” stuff & not be too affected.

Those who aren’t as committed to Jesus & the Church may not be able to watch without being influenced… affected adversely…

Do you think we should write to him? I mean, if no one ever protested in writing… he could easily get the idea that he offends no one… obviously perpetuating the notion that “everyone” is into not only sinful sex but into talking about it, flaunting it… even being proud of it…

I am always in favor of writing to people in hopes that they will realize how offensive some of their material is. Of course, it has to be charitable, because the moment we get nasty we cease to be Christlike and we lose all hope of being heard. But a decent, respectful, well-worded and specific letter (perhaps mentioning one or two instances of offense, if possible) would certainly be appropriate.

I don’t get the anti-Christian “hate-vibes” from Ferguson that I do from other talk show hosts. My impression is that he’s just doing what he thinks will get a laugh from the audience. It’s a shame that many of these comics don’t realize that their acts would be every bit as funny without all the innuendo. Dirt doesn’t make comedy funnier, just dirtier. Perhaps if the producers of the show got an idea of how many Christians would like to watch, but are turned off when the jokes get raunchy or disrespectful, they’d consider their ratings and their bottom line (which are the terms in which they think, unfortunately) and decide to broaden their appeal by having their writers cut out some of the unnecessary crudeness.

Of course, I rarely get my hopes up that I’ll see actual results when I write to someone like this, but it doesn’t keep me from doing it. If nobody wrote, there would be almost no chance of their altering the programming, right?

**Last night was the final straw for me! **

I was addicted to the Late late Show… and even when i saw that Mr. F was being too wild, i kept watching until last night… he made a joke about, well, i don’t even want to mention it really…

I turned it off & watched something else… It was weird 'cause it was amazing both how difficult it was & how easy it was…

i found something (A DVD) that was engaging… educational…

Now i am wondering if i will be tempted with this addiction again (when i have no interesting DVDs to watch )…

anyway, i am definitely writing - There is absolutely NO need for him to resort to such filthy jokes… The perverts, i am sure, would continue watching if he dropped them… and the Christians could then feel OK about watching… He can’t lose… (i pray he doesn’t lose God/Heaven)…

Porn (reference to it…) should not be allowed on TV where children can possibly see it. True, most children are in bed by that time, but there are always those times…

I thought a person who was strong in his/her faith could watch something like the Late Late show without it being a big deal to the soul. And technically, watching such stuff can’t, per se, cause a person to lose his soul (?)… but…

Anyway, I thought i could watch without it affecting me too much…

I was wrong… After watching Mr. Ferguson last night (and admitttedly, at other times) i felt… hmmm… i guess dirty is a good word… unspiritual, not close to God… even depressed on some level… “icky” I could go on…

There is some Scripture that says something about how all things are lawful but “all things edifieth not”… It is amazing how we humans can rationalize non-edifying stuff…

But if a person is dis-edified (is that a word??) too often, or non-edified… he can fall away from God and begin to not really care about being edified…

Obviously, this is not a good thing… And I am sure it would prolong a person’s stay in Purgatory…

Last night’s show was awful. I didn’t watch the whole thing, but I saw enough to make me cringe. It’s a shame. He’s a talented guy who has the capacity to be genuinely comical. But apparently he’s stuck in puberty (like so many comedians these days) and doesn’t realize how narrow the audience of interest for that sort of thing really is.

I know what you mean about that feeling you get. It’s sort of like the way you feel when you skipped dinner and ate an entire bag of chocolate chip cookies instead. Like you need to throw up and be rid of the junk, and like you never ever want to touch another chocolate chip cookie for as long as you live! Gross. Scandalized. Violated. Insulted.

What a terrible shame.

That’s exactly what i was thinking… that his raunchy comments are only amusing to a very small (sick) group of people…(@ least i hope it is small… ).

Yeah, for sure… The real shame is that he is undoubtedly leading many people onto the Road to Hell… He sends a message to all that such things are not as bad as we Christians say they are… engendering hostility toward us in the process…

I am strong in my catholic faith and i even (on some level) start to wonder if maybe i am too prudish, etc… I mean, you see enough of this stuff & you start to feel like you are a real weirdo, Superprude or something… when in fact, when you come to your senses, you know it is not you who has a serious problem…

this was one reason i decided to skip the show… I knew i had tons of better things to do. But the main problem is his foul-ness… I don’t feel it is sloth or whatever to watch if he is just funny, if he cut out the R rated stuff… We all need a good laugh once in awhile (some of us more than others ). And he is one of the funniest people I’ve seen in a long time… hence my addiction… (it also doesn’t hurt that i find him very attractive… ).

The evil one uses many ruses and disguises to lead you away from the faith. Those who lampoon the faith, or who speak in opposition to it must be examined very carefully as to their values and goals. The show is very worldly and does not lead you to a life of holiness. I have watched it a few times, but no longer, based on the foregoing observations.

Would Mother Theresa have watched the show, or prayed for him?

I hate to be one of those “good old days” guys, but late night television was at its best in the '80s and early '90s. You had Carson, followed by Letterman in his prime, and then a terrific interview show by Bob Costas.

These days, I only watch late night shows if there’s a guest I really want to see, and even then the questions almost always become sexual in nature. My biggest disappointment is with Letterman. I used to be a big fan.
