You are right, it is unbelievable because it is not true! The conviction of Galileo was rescinded relatively recently, but the bans on the belief in heliocentrism ended in 1757, and books supporting this model of the Solar System were specifically allowed in 1822.

Bill I can’t change my profile as being listed a catholic. The church teaches once your parents have you baptized you are a catholic forever like it or not. You can call me lapsed. Thats what your parents wanted you to be and thats all you were allowed to learn growing up. The church teaches ignorance of others…its sad.
I don’t quite recall ever being told I was not allowed to switch religions. Certainly there are members of this forum who are Orthodox, Muslim and Jewish who started as Catholics and now no longer consider themselves so.
With respect, this is completely off topic, and out of line. Yes, there are those who have completely abused the position of priest in a thousand different ways (sexual immorality being only one way). I doubt you will find anyone here who is anything but disgusted with such betrayals of faith. That being said, the Church has never taught that any man is capable of perfection in this life. Further, what outrages me is the fact that the Church is the only group being singled out for such attention when like numbers of ministers in other faith traditions, teachers in schools, doctors, coaches, etc. are all abusing children in this way.

Bill, (off topic) yes there are others in other faiths who have molested children. When you look at current numbers where protestants out number catholics in the USA 2 to 1 latest statistics show that the catholic church (insurance and other assets have paid out over $2 billion dollars in settlements and thousands of priests have been charged since 1950 with these crimes and the numbers are still growing. Lets not forget the bishops/cardinals that LIED and covered up these crimes, and they are crimes/felonies and the thousands of so called good priests who were aware of other priests molesting and did nothing to save their own behind and cushy job. Disgusting! When you mention other groups and other faiths you are shifting the blame/issue away from the catholic church and not accepting what the hell is going on in the catholic church. If you google priest molests you will see this is a world wide epidemic. Don't give me this baloney that we are only human and we make mistakes. Having sex with a minor is not a mistake. Its a felony. Stealing a chocolate bar from a store is a mistake. I grew up in the church in the 1950s/60s and no one then or up until these brave boys came forward would ever believe a priest could EVER commit such heinous crimes. Google priest steals, Google priest grows marijuana and you will see many they are not the squeaky clean group that catholics want them to be. I am a Catholic both by birth and by choice. I was raised in the faith, but I would hold that there is a huge difference between being raised in one’s faith and being indoctrinated. Indoctrination suggests you ultimately don’t critically examine the faith. I have critically examined my faith at many times in my life.

Was Jesus really the son of God? There should be no double standard when it comes to morals. Lets see, from a young age we were all taught that Mary conceived Jesus at 12 or 13 years of age and married to a much older man Joseph. How old was mary when she was married 10 or 11? How do moral christians justify that story? That goes against all our MORAL teachings and beliefs throughout history. We have laws that we instituted abut minimum age. Morals are the same no matter what part of the world you come from. If a neigbor or relative had a daughter that was pregnant at 12 or 13 by a much older man everyone on this forum would be outraged, but again the old double standard. If the bible says so it must be true and it must be OK. Right? WRONG! I believe the son of god story was made up to justify mary getting pregnant when she was just a child. I am a lapsed catholic like most are today. UNBELIEVABLE!!
