My father showed me some stuff which links the muslim faith, catholicism, and the masonic brotherhood; I found this to be extremely disconcerting, especially considering im planning on beginning with RCIA in the immediate future. Here’s the link in question:
babylonmysteryreligion.com/The%20Islam%20Connection.htm

What really bothered me was the symbolism in the monstrance; somebody please set me straight.

Sounds like a cult group put this together…they have their own ‘seeing’ eye…2 +2 =0…

If you have cable, please go to EWTN, Eternal Word Television…

To display the Eucharistic Lord, we place Him in a most fitting place, the monstrance.

Be not afraid…

This was apparently put together by a religious professor; the claims are extremely disturbing… they make me hesitate regarding my coming to Rome

it’s pure nonsense. No where in any writings of the Church will you see any of this junk. Also this person has never taken an Art History course. Much of what he said about what the symbols mean is garbage. This is an anti-Catholic site and not worth the time to read.

I just glanced through it, but saw enough to realize that there is nothing but falsehoods in it.

I got to the part about Catholicism and Islam being the same thing, and from glancing at it, it appears that the parallel they draw from is about sun and stars being depicted on some objects. However, if they were really the same thing, they would teach the same things.

The little bit I read, a lot of conclusions are drawn based on images, not teachings, and even then it’s how the images are interpreted by the writer of this page.

Rather than go through all of this and try to answer your questions, it might be best to state your particular concerns. (And not only here; you said it’s making you doubt Catholicism, so take it to your priest as well.)

So start with the symbolism of the monstrance. I didn’t get that far on the site, or maybe I missed it because I was skimming. What worries you about the monstrance?

Also take into account what the poster above me said. This site is junk.

Who told you it was written by a professor of religious studies? Having the name of the guy who wrote it could tell you a lot.

Btw, im not a catholic yet, im going to begin the rcia process over the next week hopefully; my concern regarding the sun and moon was with the monstrance: the fact that it holds a crescent moon symbol underneath where the host sits; with the rays of light representing the shining sun…

Because they use disconnected images, and creepy ones at that…the senses are powerful means the Enemy comes.

Yes, turn away from such junk…and from these kinds of cults.

The Word of God is all about Christ and His redeeming and saving power. And His redeeming and saving power is about the new life in Him…about communion.

Anything that is not teaching communion with God and neighbor but divisions and spreading hatred and fear come from Satan.

There is a thread here in the CAF about this same subject. The title of the thread is “The Monstrance”. Here is the link:forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=76185

I hope this helps.

I think the so-called “link” between Catholicism and Islam is bogus. Anybody can make a symbolic link, and almost anything can be linked to anything else.

The whole thing about the “male” and “female” rays is just silly. Note that they don’t give proof of their accusations.

The crescent in the first particular picture looks like a reflection. The second, as far as I can tell, wasn’t really a crescent moon, just design. But use google images to look up other monstrances; you won’t see crescent moons all over.

I’m not up on what the design of the monstrance means, but I have read that the whole sun thing is symbolic of the Transfiguration. That’s why the rays.

But moon symbolism? It’s only in the mind of the guy who wrote the site.

Look at the rest of the site. It’s a seventh-day adventist site. That is what’s ultimately being promoted there. But don’t trust any site that doesn’t initially give out the information of who they are. It states that the site is a non-profit site, but the whole thing about Catholics changing the worship to Sunday is a tip-off.

Be skeptical of any site that doesn’t easily give you information of who they are. But if you’re still uneasy, feel free to talk to the priest who will be running the RCIA classes.

Shared symbols don’t mean anything. This particular website is linking meaning where there is none. Makes for great sensationalism but doesn’t do anything for fact or truth.

Graphic representations can mean different things to different people. For example, the swastika symbol appears in several cultures. Does this mean all these cultures hated Jews?

If you want to know what the rays on a monstrance represent then read up on monstrances and their designs. Here’s a particularly beautiful one.

You are about to convert and you believe the utter rubbish that one can find in this website?

Perhaps you better go to better websites.

http://www.wordonfire.org/

The link you gave was clearly done by person/s who hate the Catholic Church, with a very vivid imagination and totally ignorant of Catholic doctrine.

You have to learn to be discerning in what you read, This kind of Protestant rubbish propaganda is a product of hate and abject ignorance.

Since the love of God is the beginning of wisdom, then the lack of wisdom in that website is quite telling.

Friend, how could you not see right through this hog wash anti-Catholic bigotry? We’re toalking about serious bigotry conjured up to slander the Church. It’s nothing but a bunch of trash. When Iwas a practicing Protestant, I never bought into that trash. My feelings about this is equivalent to my reaction to Jack Chick tracts.

You know, the one thing that really sets Catholics apart from many faiths is the Eucharist. You’ve obviously haven’t read the the early church fathers regarding the Eucharist. Ignatius clearly calls those that do not accept the bread and wine are the real body and blood of Christ, heretics.

If the bread and wine are the real body of Christ, then why would it not be held in high exsteem. Either you’re very gullible or not really sincere in starting RCIA. Strange.

The Church holds that Freemasonry is incompatible with the Catholic faith. As to Islam, we share a God, Christ as a Prophet, and veneration of the virgin Mary. That’s it. Symbolism? What about the pagan Roman symbol of the criminal’s death? The Catholic Church shares that one with Caesar: the cross.

What you need to do is run out and buy a: Catechism, and a copy of Catholicism for Dummies. They should be mandatory reading in every RCIA program. Never mind the red herrings and canards that are thrown up by those who hate the Catholic Church. Focus solely on what the Church teaches.

  1. Catholicism is NOT the same religion as Islam. Catholicism believes in the Trinity, Jesus is God, the Crucifixion, and that Islam is founded by Satan (Mohammad, a mere man, founded it, but, he was very decieved). All these things Islam denies.
  2. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA to the comparison between traditionally dressed nuns and Islamic women in burqua’s (or something). Oh dear! Silly! I don’t know if those were real nuns, but, did you notice how they were smiling?
  3. Why are you beginning RCIA so late? I thought this program started in September.

The first thing I would ask before going into any sort of website that deals with religion or cults etc would be to ask who is their authority. There are plenty of people who like to disturb others with so called allegations and they look for anyone gullible enough will fall into the deceit.

I had a quick look at it (as a former Protestant myself). It’s a load of rubbish. The centre of the Catholic Church is Christ, and no other. I remember one protestant friend of mine who, when I told him I’d gone Catholic, blurted, “How you gonna feel when you have to bow down before a statue, huh?” Well, I can inform him with 100% accuracy I haven’t bowed down before a statue yet.

I have no idea of where the sun and moon symbols came from, but if you look at Revelation 12 for example (which is in the Bible), there is a description of a woman clothed with the sun and with the moon under her feet. I think many Catholics would accept this refers to Mary, especially since she’s been appearing with disconcerting regularity in heavenly apparitions, particularly over the last couple of centuries, and in 1917 at Fatima the two miracles there both involved the sun.

If you take a good look at the window in the New Orleans church, it seems to me the image above the moon and sun is that of a stylised woman. And in the end, all it is is ART, not idolatory. Who cares what’s in the window? It’s just part of the decor.

The Moslem dress for women is merely traditional Arab desert dress given religious overtones, and turned into a religious icon. The head to foot covering kept out the sun and the sand, and the vortex effect of their black clothing actually induced air to circulate around their bodies, thus cooling them.

But the reason nuns wear overall covering dress is to reduce temptation, not reveal their bodies, and signify they belong to Christ, not the world. As far as that goes, religious orders even in Buddhism tend to wear long, flowing robes. And they cover their head in line with Paul’s injunction about a woman covering her head.

The wafer the Pope is using is simply a bigger version of the small wafer that we all take as part of communion, The wafers are used for the simple reason they’re convenient. If you’ve got a Cathedral of 1000 people to give bread too, long lasting wafers of unleavened bread are a far more convenient method that the usual protestant method of cutting up leavened bread.

And he dips the wafer into a cup, not a half moon, just as Christ did.

As for the “all seeing eye”, it’s a symbol that’s been around for donkey’s years, and it’s simply a result of anthropromorhism. So what if the Freemasons or Moslems lifted it from other sources? It probably predates both of them, and is symbol meant to mean God’s omniscience ie. He sees everything. In the ART in the church, it simply means we are in God’s presence and nothing is hidden.

For an article on anthropromorphism, read the following -

newadvent.org/cathen/01558c.htm

The thing that really annoys me about these sorts of stupid concoctions is how they create such misrepresentation on such false bases.

Since becoming Catholic, I’ve come to realise just how stupid and downright ignorant many Protestants are about the Catholic Church. A lot of them tell a lot of lies about it, frankly. And lying is a sin. It gets on my goat.

To be avoided. Just a quick viewing showed some omissions and claims which I never heard of before; didn’t care to read more. I question the validity of the site and it’s claims. Why did your father show you this site? Is he trying to disuade you from beginning RCIA?

If you have questions about the monstrance, why not speak to a priest rather than research from some site of dubious validity? If you are preparing for RCIA, I would suggest you stick to official sites of the Catholic faith.

My dad showed me that sort of stuff because I was demonstrating an interest in becoming Catholic; he’s been trying to dissuade me from swimming he Tiber

Go toward what you are convinced is the truth. The Lord is calling you to lead your dad along. Can you even believe that?
