I did not misrepresent what he said. He said what he said. The real irony of your post is your declaring me “perilously close” to bearing false witness for saying what the former president actually said while essentially accusing the president of it. I realize you’re biased against Trump and those who support him, but this is over the edge.

Equally ridiculous is the idea America is a Christian nation.
So is America a Jewish, Muslim, Hindoo, Buddhist, nihilist, secular humanist or what nation? It is something. There is some religion (in a broad sense) that it is based on.

I have not in any manner misrepresented what Obama said. He said what he said.

You have misrepresented me in this exchange, and grievously. My point in bringing up Obama’s declarations was not to assert that he believed those utterances or that he believed them in a particular way, but to point out that such utterances have major resonance when one is the president of the U.S. The man who leased the billboard expressed himself, which he had every right to do. But political correctness pressured the billboard company to deprive him of that which was perfectly all right with it before.

Imaginably those who do not live in the U.S. do not have as strong a command of the American political landscape as they might imagine that they do.

He said what he said. And you are purporting to judge my thinking when you have no idea what I’m thinking. Willfully misrepresenting means “lying”. I did not say Obama said anything other than what he said, and for the reasons I said it.

I thought you were a better person than to try to win an argument by calling the other party a liar instead of meeting the real argument head on. I see now that you are not.

For those who perhaps didn’t read what Obama actually said, here it is, from the source I quoted before:

"A few days ago President Obama, in an interview he gave France’s Canal+ TV Channel, said that the American people need to be better educated about Islam, since US could and should be regarded as a Muslim country. He said that the number of Muslims residing in the US makes it “one of the biggest Muslim nations”.

There just isn’t much way to take that other than that he said America is a “Muslim nation”. That’s what he said. I did not purport to interpret what he meant by it. I certainly do know how a lot of people took it.

Obama also said so famously that one doesn’t need to quote it again, that America is not a Christian nation. Again, I don’t purport to read his mind as to what he meant by it, but I do know how a lot of people took it.

Including the guy who put up the billboard, but whose voice “political correctness” shut down.

No. It’s good that you have now told me and everybody on here that you have judged me a liar for quoting Obama’s words. It says a lot more abouit you than it does about me. Think what you want of yourself.

but haven’t we always been a country with
freedom of religion?
Christianity, since the birth of our country, has been the majority religion. I am not sure what the statistics are today in June of 2018. of course, there are many who call themselves Christian, but don’t attend church or perhaps are CEO’s, Christmas and Easter only. Egypt probably considers itself a Muslim nation even though Christians are able to worship there.

To be fair to Obama, i think he wanted to point out that the other faiths should not be excluded when talking about religion in
America and, certainly the number of Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and Jewish people of faith has increased.
We are a country of many faiths, but I think Christians are still in the majority.

I think what most people were offended by in the interview was that he seemed to want to downplay the Christian religion and its place in the history of our country.

It is this calculated and somewhat fantastic misrepresentation of reality that recalls the mentality of birtherism.

And please note @Ridgerunner, I did not say that you supported bitrtherism, but I spoke ospecifically of the mentality. That mentality is clearly reflected in this series of your posts. And @7_Sorrows, there is nothing dishonest in the least in pointed that out. Please retract your false accusation against me.

I did not misrepresent what he said. He said what he said.
Sadly you did on two counts.
First you are continually misquoting in a way that shifts the connotation.
Second, you are deliberately juxtaposing two unrelated quotes framed in different contexts to distort the meaning.

And btw, that involes no minreading at all. Just reading your posts.

The clip does not support the quote which is rephrased and distorted in the article, and treated in a stragely polemical manner in the clip.
There just isn’t much way to take that other than that he said America is a “Muslim nation”.
Intersting. If that is what he said, why the quotes around only the two words: Muslim nation (sic)?
If you want just to say what he said, why not actually quote him?

Thank you so much. I think that your willingness to be fair rather than pay gotcha and try to spin this into something as phony as - let’s say, the War on Christmas is highly laudable.

you brought up birtherism and birtherism
mentality in posts #16 and #38.

you brought up birtherism and birtherism
mentality in posts #16 and #38.
I am not unfamiliar with my posts.
In nether post did I suggest indicate the RR promoted birtherism.
Nor did I speak dishonestly.

I did say:
… this calculated and somewhat fantastic misrepresentation of reality … recalls the mentality of birtherism.
That applies whether RR promotes birtherism of not.

in both posts #16 and #38 you were quoting RR and replying to his posts.
it is onl y natural one would come to that conclusion.
