Do Catholics know the real Jesus?

Hello people,
I see all the comments, First off lets come off to a good start, I’m not a protestant, I’m not a Calvanist, I am a bible beliving Christian they way the church is called in Acts 2. Let me ask a few questions:
The New Testament hadn’t yet been written on the day of Pentecost described in Acts Chapter 2, so it’s hard to see how the Church could have been a “Bible believing Church” before the Bible was complete. But I’m glad that you are a Bible believing Christian. So am I, which is why I am Catholic.
First off, Do you believe that Gods Word is truth and holds authority over the world and mankind (John 17:17)?. If you do, praise God,
Yes! And as 1 Thes 2:13 says, “God’s word” consists of BOTH Scripture AND the Apostles’ preaching (what we call Sacred Tradition).

“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers,” 1 Thes. 2:13.

My question is, do YOU believe that God’s word BOTH in the form of Scripture AND in the form of Apostolic Traidition has authority over the world and mankind?
Do you believe your a good person?
Only by virtue of Jesus’ shed blood. Catholics believe we cannot do anything good apart from Jesus’ help. It’s right in our Catechism. “We can have merit in God’s sight only because of God’s free plan to associate man with the work of his grace. Merit is to be ascribed in the first place to the grace of God, and secondly to man’s collaboration. Man’s merit is due to God.” CCC 2025.
Are you trying to hard to do good, keeping all the sacraments? Do you keep the 7 sacraments?
Sacraments are not works. Sacraments are gifts which we receive, not good deeds that we perform.
To believe in the Gospel is to believe that Christ paid it all at the cross. … Which comes to the last question: Do you believe Jesus paid it all at the cross? And if you do, then is there a need for transubstantiation? If Christ paid it all on the cross, why must we continue to sacrifice our saviour in a waffer. That some how God Himself physically becomes that waffer when the priest says “bread”. It is true, Jesus is the bread of life, He states "“Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:54 but then Jesus also states:
“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40. Now is this a contradiction? Or what is He really trying to say?
“The flesh profits nothing” John 6:63
This is a false dichotomy. Yes, we believe Jesus “paid it all” on the cross. And yes, we believe His sacrifice is perpetual, since He is our high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (Heb. 6:20). Perpetual priesthood means perpetual sacrifice. That’s why Revelation 6:9 and 8:3 shows an altar in heaven. If Jesus were not still our sacrifice, then why would Revelation still depict an altar in heaven? (You’ll find that the Catholics here know our Bibles quite well. Usually better than those who come here to “enlighten” us).

part two
As for why we continue to re-present the sacrifice… it is because Jesus said so. John 6, the overlooked and/or abused chapter protestants have walked away from.
We don’t re-present the sacrifice. Rather the Mass or the sacrifice of the Mass is to make presence the sacrifice of the cross in an unbloody manner. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice transcends time and space. If it didn’t, we would still be dead in sin.

Hello people,
I see all the comments, First off lets come off to a good start, I’m not a protestant, I’m not a Calvanist, I am a bible beliving Christian they way the church is called in Acts 2.
Does this mean that you are a Charismatic Christian? If so, are you aware that there is a vigorous Charismatic Movement in the Catholic Church?
Let me ask a few questions:
First off, Do you believe that Gods Word is truth and holds authority over the world and mankind (John 17:17)?. If you do, praise God,
As for God’s Word being truth, I presume that you mean the Scriptures in the reduced canon of only 66 Books.

Catholics accept Sacred Scripture as truth. It is the Catholic Church that first characterized the Scriptures as the “inspired and inerrant word of God.”
another Question: is Do you believe that people even the elect will be decieved?(Matt 24:24) . . .
Do you believe your a good person? . . . Paul states in Galatians 2:16 “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”
You see it’s not us who can keep the law, we as man failed to keep the law so Christ came and died, so that now having faith in Christ’s righteousness, we put on that righteousness. There’s nothing that you can do apart from God(Romans 4:6)it is Christ who strenthens us. By having faith good deeds will come. There’s not list that we have to follow. You see if you truly believe that Christ is everything, and you do not want to disobey God, then it’s the love and faith that you have by His spirit which drives you to produce good works.
Are you trying to hard to do good, keeping all the sacraments? Do you keep the 7 sacraments? And Lucy have you truly “repented” and believed in the Gospel of Christ, to forsake all efforts to save yourself from the sacrements(which isn’t a law in the bible)good works, indulgences. To believe in the Gospel is to believe that Christ paid it all at the cross. Hebrews 10 states:y that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
My, my, my. I am guessing that you think Catholics believe in “works righteousness.” I encourage you learn what the Church ACTUALLY believes.
Hbr 10:11-18
And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. . . . Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Which comes to the last question: Do you believe Jesus paid it all at the cross? And if you do, then is there a need for transubstantiation? If Christ paid it all on the cross, why must we continue to sacrifice our saviour in a waffer.
You pass along a common Protestant misunderstanding of the Mass. You misunderstand everything that possibly could be misunderstood.
That some how God Himself physically becomes that waffer when the priest says “bread”. It is true, Jesus is the bread of life, He states “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:54 but then Jesus also states:
“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40. Now is this a contradiction? Or what is He really trying to say?
“The flesh profits nothing” John 6:63
YES: we believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist because HE said so! As for “The flesh profits nothing” note that all through the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus refers to “my flesh” – eating “my flesh”, “my flesh” to be given for the life of the world. In verse 63, the word is SIGNIFICANTLY changed to “THE flesh.”
These are just a few things that I’ve mentioned, I have the Catecism and the apacratha. We also can soeak about cannon of scripture if you wish, or even Mary.
Yeah. Watch out for those “apacratha.” As for the canon of Scripture, since the Catholic Church gave us the canon, there is little to discuss except why people removed 7 inspired books. Mary? Stay tuned.
I care for everyone here and I just want you to know the truth.
Get ready. If you want truth, you’ll get it. You’re in for some surprises.

Also, remember to hold on to Charity. Though you have not done this. You will get better response if you say “It is my understanding that Catholics worship Mary, why is that” as opposed to “Why do you Catholics Worship Mary over Jesus?”

Both get the same message across, but one holds the love and charity Christ demands of all of his followers
:clapping: 👍

Hi JehuandGod,

As a Catholic, I can say “Yes, I believe these verses 100%!”

However, it appears quite obvious that you have an incorrect knowledge of the Catholic Church.

Your post seems to begin with an implication that the Catholic Church is not “Bible Believing”, which isn’t correct. The Catholic Church believes the Bible 100%. Not only do Catholics believe the Bible entirely, but also acknowledge that there is no contradiction anywhere in the Bible. Truth cannot contradict itself.

The second part of your post seems to be an assertion of “faith alone”, which the Bible does not teach. Nor does it teach salvation by works alone. The Catholic Church, in agreement with the Bible, teaches that while salvation is impossible without faith, we are saved by God’s grace. Both faith & works are necessary responses to that grace, which is needed for either of these to even be possible.

Your objection to the Eucharist displays a lack of understanding of what sacraments are, as well as why Christ gave them to us.

The sacraments are not man-made attempts to “save ourselves.” Rather, they are the means, that Christ instituted, by which we receive God’s grace.

The personal interpretation of “the flesh profits nothing” is probably the most commonly used objection to the Eucharist. However, this very interpretation actually creates a personal contradiction by Jesus. Did He really command people to eat his flesh, then immediately state that it would be a waste of time?

I agree – our flesh is worthless, but how can anyone claim that Christ’s flesh is of no avail?! If His flesh was of no profit, then Jesus entire life, death & resurrection would have been worthless! If they were all worthless, then our “faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished" (1 Cor. 15:17b–18).”

In addition to the numerous articles linked here, as well as the loads of threads that have previously provided explanations for the same objections you raise, here are a couple of articles that may be of great value in explaining what Catholics believe and why.

JehuandGod, before we accept any spiritual advice or teachings from you, may we know more about your credentials? For instance, new “born again Christians” sometimes pop on here to tell us what the Bible “really” says, only to discover that we have read the whole Bible and they haven’t! And invariably they misunderstand what we Catholics believe. So I’m sure you’ll understand that we want to know more about you.
  1. Have you read the whole Bible?
  2. Have you read the whole Catechism of the Catholic Church?
  3. What type of church do you attend? (yeah, I know you want to say “Bible believing,” but can you be more specific?)
  4. Do you have any specialized training or education that qualifies you to interpret Scripture better than we do?
  5. How often do you read Scripture?
See, virtually every regular member here has read the whole Bible, most read it daily or at least frequently, and many have read the whole Catechism. So, is there something you can add to the Gospel beyond what we already have? Or is there something about Catholic doctrine that you feel qualified to show us that isn’t in our Catechism?

We don’t re-present the sacrifice. Rather the Mass or the sacrifice of the Mass is to make presence the sacrifice of the cross in an unbloody manner. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice transcends time and space. If it didn’t, we would still be dead in sin.
re-present does not infer a second sacrifice. But yes the priest does re-present what happened at the Cross. It is because there is no limit (time and space) on God that His Actions are eternal.

Do you believe your a good person?
Are you a fan of Kirk Cameron by chance?? 🙂

Anyhow, Catholics fully believe in all the verses you do, but probably not your interpretations (I assume so since you are not Catholic.) Could you perhaps synthesize what it is you are driving at? Because of course true Catholics know Jesus. Are you suggesting they do not?

I think you should peruse the website here because many of your questions on the so-called “Apocrypha” and Mary are probably addressed already.

Hi, Alexander. Welcome to the Forums! I knew Jesus for many many years while I attended a “Bible believing” church, usually 3 times a week. I thought Catholics were all Mary-worshiping idolaters who might be saved but if they were it was in spite of the Catholic Church and not because of it. :o

Long story short, it was Jesus’ very words in the Gospels that convinced me that the Catholic Church is Christ’s Church. The BIBLE Made Me Catholic! 👍 I now know the REAL Jesus and not the symbolic Jesus we observed on the last Sunday of every month (if someone remembered to buy grape juice) in my former church. My faith is deeper and richer and stronger since I became Catholic. Praise be to God! 😃

Hello JehuandGod,

I have a question for you. You begin by quoting scripture, but didn’t give us a reason why we should believe that the Bible is the Word of God.

Please let me know why I should accept the Bible as the Word of God. Where did it come from? Who got to decide? How do we know it contains the truth?

Perhaps after we’ve come to an understanding on that, we can start accepting what it says.

Hello Alexander!
I have read your comments. First off, why don’t you and I get a good start. I’m not a protestant either. Nor a Calvinist. I am a Bible believing Christian just way the apostles were in Acts 2. Let me ask you a few questions:
First off, Do you believe that Gods Word (Jesus Christ) is truth and holds authority over the world and mankind (Matthew 28:18,19)?. If you do, praise God! Another Question: Do you believe that people even the elect have a free will to follow God?(Rom 10:4,13) If you believe in these things in which Jesus Christ mentions then I think we’d be off to a good start. I’m not here to fight. However I am here to argue for and defend the Truth (1 Tim. 3:15).

You start by speaking of the commandments. If it’s the 10 commandments you speak of, as you said, of course Paul states in Galatians 2:16 “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”
Of course we cannot keep the old law. We as men failed to keep the law so Christ came and died, so that now following in Christ’s righteousness, we too might put on that righteousness (Jn 14:15, 20:21-23, 2 Cor. 10:8). Like you said, there’s nothing one can do apart from God (Rom. 4:6) for it is Christ who strengthens us. By having absolute faith in His message, truth will come. There is no room to follow our own ideas. You see, if you truly believe that Christ is Lord, Who has authority over all and can delegate it, and you do not want to disobey God, then it’s the love and faith that you have by His spirit which drives you to find His Church, guided by the Apostle’s successors.
Do you understand Christ and His instituting the sacraments? Do you know what a sacrament is? And Alexander, have you truly “repented” and believed in the Gospel of Christ? Do you deny yourself and your own authority to follow Christ’s? To believe in the Gospel is to believe that Christ paid it all at the cross. It means doing all the He commands of you and nothing less. Just as you said: Hebrews 10 states: that we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hbr 10:11
And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
Hbr 10:12
But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,
Hbr 10:13
from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.
Hbr 10:14
For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
Hbr 10:18
Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Which comes to the last question: Do you believe Jesus paid it all at the cross? And if you believe our Savior loves us that much, why wouldn’t He want to give us His body everytime we gather? If Christ paid it all on the cross, why wouldn’t we remember that each time we come together? Some how God Himself physically becomes bread and wine when the priest says consecrates it. It is simply a beautiful “divine mystery”. He states “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:54 but then Jesus also states:
“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40. Now is this a contradiction? For what is He trying to say?
That all who believe in Him will do His will. And to them, He will give His flesh and blood in love. These are just a few things that I’ve mentioned. I am a former Dispensationalist so I know inside and out where you’re coming from. We can speak about the canon of Scripture if you wish, or even Mary.

I care for everyone here and I just want you to know the truth.

Wow, these thorough and knowledgeable responses make me proud to be a member of CAF. How does protestantism even stand a chance?

Keep it up, guys! I have nothing better to contribute.

Hello I’m Alexander (edited personal information) and I’m 21 years old. I’m new to Forums and I would like to talk and share Christ Jesus with anyone that would like to hear His Word. I’m a “Christian” a believer in Christ, faccording to God’s word. I’m not hear to argure but state facts. I not here to say what is "right and what is “wrong”. I’m here to pray for the catholics in hope that they will see the Christ as He is.🙂
:rotfl:

It just cracks me up whenever I read something like this. People like Alexander stumble upon this website, probably while they’re looking for more fundamentalist and anti-Catholic sites to join, and must expect to find a bunch of Biblically illiterate, mindless, sheep, just waiting to be “saved the Bible way” They must think they’re the very first “Christian” to come here (they’re the only ones brave enough to enter SynagogueofSatan.com  ), and they alone will “enlighten us” with “Christian truth”. All I can think of is “great, here comes another one!”

It’d be funny, if it wasn’t so tiresome  .

Carry on, you all are doing a great job.

In Christ,

Ellen

I would first like to state that the bible translation in which I read is King James, also, the work we do as christians is produced by our faith.I’ve shared that verse. The catecism is not valid doctrine. It’s the same doctrine in which the pope adds too. God said do not add to His word.
I have nothing to do with the reformation, I can care less. I don’t believe that Mary is devine. She cried out for a saviour. I would never call any man father except for who is in Heaven, Jesus mentioned this in His Word. Praying to the dead is a sin. Worshiping a graven image is a sin. Changing the commandments, which I’ll explian later, is a sin. Israel is God’s time clock. Just read Daniel, Revelation. The Church is not Peter, Christ is the Shephard of the church. Pergatory is not in the bible, the apacratha is not valid doctrine. Everything Catholics hold to is tradition. Prove me wrong.

Interesting, I was in your camp not all that long ago. I too was a KJV Christian.

Let me pose a question to you, and see if you can answer it.

Where in the KJV, or any Bible translation, does it say that the BIble is the only standard for your faith?

Where does the Bible say that you should follow only those teachings which are in the Bible?

I as a KJVer used to view the belief that the Bible is to be the only guide for the Christian faith to be a self-evident proposition. It is nothing of the sort.

By contending that the Bible is the sole guide for your faith, (as I assume you would), you are contradicting your words with your propositions; because that proposition is never found in the Bible.

Perhaps one day you will wake up, as I did, and the walls of your religious system will start to collapse. When that happens, I hope you consider Catholicism. You wouldn’t believe how good it feels to be home. Becoming Catholic is bar none the best thing I have ever done.

I would like to state that the bible translations in which I read are the New King James, New American, and the Revised Standard Version. The works we do as Christians are not complete without our faith and vice-versa. The catecism absolutely contains valid doctrine. It’s the same doctrine in which the Apostles taught. God taught not to add nor take away from to His word.
I have nothing to do with the reformation either. Like you, I could care less. I don’t believe that Mary is divine either. She cried out for a savior. I would never call any man my Heavenly Father except for Who is in Heaven. Like you said, Jesus mentioned this in His Word. To worship the dead is a sin. To worship a graven image is a sin. Changing the commandments - which after you explain I shall reply to later - is a sin. Israel is God’s people, the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Just read Revelation. You are absolutely right. The Church is not Peter. Christ is the Shepherd of the Church. The word “purgatory” is not in the bible. Nor is the word “trinity”. The apocrypha is valid doctrine. Everything Catholics hold to is the faith of the Apostles. Prove me wrong.

Great post! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍

Jehu, until you can answer his statements nothing else you say can be taken seriously.

I would first like to state that the bible translation in which I read is King James, also, the work we do as christians is produced by our faith.
The Bible I read is the St. Ignatius Catholic Bible RSV-Second Edition and the Douay Rheims Catholic Bible which predates the King James.
I’ve shared that verse. The catecism is not valid doctrine. It’s the same doctrine in which the pope adds too. God said do not add to His word.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains Scriptural references. It is a summary of our beliefs concerning faith and morals. It also include documents from the 16 Document of the Second Vatican Council.

Not all of the Catechism is infallible. Certain parts of it is infallible.

Nothing new is added in the Catechism. It’s been handed down to us from the bishops who got it from the Apostles, and the Apostles received it from Jesus.

catechism (pronounced /ˈkætəkɪzəm/; Ancient Greek: κατηχισμός) is a summary or exposition of doctrine, traditionally used in Christian religious teaching from New Testament times to the present.[1]

Catechisms are not limited to the Catholic Church. There are other catechisms written for several Protestant churches.
Catechisms are doctrinal manuals often in the form of questions followed by answers to be memorized, a format that has been used in non-religious or secular contexts as well
I have nothing to do with the reformation, I can care less. I don’t believe that Mary is devine.
Well, the Catholic Church does teach that Mary is divine. I don’t know where you got that idea or belief from. The Catechism doesn’t even teaches it. Base on this response, it is apparent you know very little about Catholicism. That’s one mistake you made so far.
She cried out for a saviour.
She did. She prayed the Magnificat. “My Soul proclaim the greatness of the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” She received God’s grace from the moment of her conception and preserved her from original sin and personal sin.

She was preserved because God hate sin. He would not allow his Son dwell inside a sinful woman. Mary is the type of Ark. Like the Ark of the Old Covenant, the Ark is pure. The Ark also carried the Word of God in the form of the Tablet. Mary on the other hand carried Jesus, the Word of God.

Mary is sinless and there has been thread about this subject, so let’s not derail this topic.

You are pretty new here and is so common for newbies or rookies like yourself to derail topics.
I would never call any man father except for who is in Heaven, Jesus mentioned this in His Word.
: Matthew 23:9, “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in Heaven.” Notice, however, that this makes no distinction between spiritual fathers, which is what our priests are to us, and biological fathers. In other words, if you interpret this passage to say, absolutely, that no man is to be called father, you cannot distinguish between calling a priest, father, and calling the man who is married to your mother, father.

But, is that actually what this passage is saying? Or is Jesus warning us against trying to usurp the fatherhood of God? Which, in many ways, is what the Pharisees and Scribes were doing. They wanted all attention focused on them…they were leaving God, the Father, out of the equation. Which is why Jesus goes on to call them hypocrites, liars, and whitewashed tombs.

If you interpret this passage from Matthew 23 as an absolute ban against calling anyone your spiritual father, then there are some problems for you in the rest of Scripture. For example, Jesus, in the story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16, has the rich man referring to Abraham as “father” several times. Paul, in Romans chapter 4, refers to Abraham as the “father” of the uncircumcised, the Gentiles. That’s referring to spiritual fatherhood, not biological fatherhood.

In Acts 7:1-2, the first Christian martyr, Stephen, referred to the Jewish authorities and elders who were about to stone him as brothers and “fathers,” as does Paul in Acts, chapter 22. This is referring to spiritual fatherhood. So, if you interpret Matthew 23 as saying we cannot call anyone our spiritual father, then you have a problem with Jesus, Paul, Stephen, and the Holy Spirit…they must have all gotten it wrong.

It is okay to call priests “father”, just as it was okay for Jesus and Paul to call Abraham “father” and for Stephen and Paul to call the Jewish elders “father.” As long as we remember that our true Father is God the Father and that all aspects of fatherhood, biological and spiritual, are derived from Him. And as long as we do not allow anyone else to usurp that role in any way, shape, or form, as the Pharisees and Scribes were prone to do.

Praying to the dead is a sin.
Praying for the dead is old. It’s practiced by the Jews. The Mourner’s Kaddish which is based from.

Prayer for the dead appears in the Pharisaic[1] book 2 Maccabees.[2] Judas Maccabeus offers a sacrifice as a propitiatory sin-offering and a memorial thank-offering. These prayers and sacrifices were intended to improve the standing of the dead during the resurrection. Jews do not regard 2 Maccabees as canonical, perhaps because of its theological innovations.[1]

Within Judaism, prayers for the dead form part of the Jewish services. The prayers offered on behalf of the deceased consist of: Recitation of Psalms; Reciting a thrice daily communal prayer in Aramaic known as “Kaddish” which actually means “Sanctification” (or “[Prayer of] Making Holy”) which is a prayer “In Praise of God”; or other special remembrances known as Yizkor; and also a Hazkara said either on the annual commemoration known as the Yahrzeit as well on Jewish holidays.

The form in use in England contains the following passage: Have mercy upon him; pardon all his transgressions . . . Shelter his soul in the shadow of Thy wings. Make known to him the path of life.

Hey,
Am I the only one who got a PM from this guy wanting to discuss pretty much the same thing his 2nd post says?

I have no problem with that per se, but I just wondered.
