Do we vote for the lesser of two evils?

I can represent we have four votes waiting for Romney in Virginia! Our votes count!

Nice argument. Realistic available choices are (1) Democrat or (2) Republican. Regardless of whether you categorize a party “evil” or “okay”, you only have two choices for available for consideration, since self-declared Independents generally vote for one of the mainstream parties. I consider the GOP far superior with respect to my Catholic faith, which ultimately governs my vote in American politics. The Democrats support abortion, gay marriage, the social welfare state, and an overall secular humanist agenda. I support life, heterosexual marriage, capitalism, and limited federal government. Based on those beliefs, I have no alternative but to support the Grand Old Party.
Excuse for my writing and English as it’s not my strength. The library internet does not help either. :D:D

I would like to post my responses here to Tampa Dave, an Opus Dei Cooperator, which will touch on other issues I previously promised from other members.

It is unfathomable to me that people would put their Catholic Faith on a political party as a dependancy. This is sad and outrageous just like the comment, “If you vote for such person and such party, you still consider yourself Catholic?” Brother Dave, you are an Opus Dei Cooperator and should know better. You should put your faith on God alone.

Since this thread is on the lesser of 2 evils, here is my take on it and the evilness I see on the Repulican Party.

Capitalism
I just want to remind you that money or the love of money as the root of all evil. It was 30 piece$ of $ilver that caused Jesus to be crucified. Sure both political parties partake in this system but the Repulican Party promotes this system more. Capitalism is an evil economic system promoted/advocated/practiced by a pseudo dead “messiah” who along with other pseudo Christian Churches have taught blasphemous teachings about Mother Mary, the Trinitarian God, Immaculate Conception of Mary and Jesus Birth . Their false doctrines is a real religious attack to Catholism. He thrived on this system and built a billion dollar empire while hiding behind a fascade of religiousity and piousness with such right wing conservative allies like the Falwell, the Bushes, and have influenced the right wing conservative politics under the umbrella of the the Republican Party.

Sheldon Adelson, the conservative billionaire Las Vegas casino owner, has pledged to give up to $100 million – whatever it takes – to defeat Barack Obama. If Mitt Romney wins – $2 billion more for Adelson. If Barack Obama wins, millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.

Here’s how it would work for Adelson in a Romney-Ryan administration:
Code:
-- Romney would keep in place the Bush tax cuts, and cut Adelson's income taxes by an additional 20 percent. Adelson savings: $1.5 million per year on income he earns as CEO.
-- Romney's plan eliminates taxes on foreign profits like the ones Adelson makes on his Asian casinos. Adelson savings: $1.2 billion.
-- Romney's plan maintains the current low tax rate on dividends. Adelson savings: $120 million per year.
-- Romney's plan removes the estate tax. Adelson heirs save: $8.9 billion.
This is all in the name of Mammon!

Religious Bigotry
I attended rallies in New York on 9/11 2010. It was my personal experience and was being promoted by the right wing conservatives under the umbrella of the Republican Party with Tea Party Movement supporters in attendance. Newt Gingrich, Pamela Geller (organizer and leader of the Stop Islamization of America), Dutch MP Geert Wilders are among the speakers. There were so many blasphemous religous messages: “To stop Islamization, pray the Rosary” “Islam hates Women” “Abolish all Religion” and threatening and promoting Q’uran burning, etc… If you want to read about this google Extremists Hold Weekend Of Anti-Islam Hate; Mainstream Americans Push Back With Rallies And Interfaith Events

Lack of care and compassion
How could a party turn medicare into a voucher sysmtem? How is this care for the elderly? What platform issues do they do for the poor and disadvantaged? For the environment? For saying that climate change is a hoax? The tax break for the wealthy is just outrageous! How compassionate are you as a leader if you close a business for profit and abandone your employees? How caring and compassionate are you if you are going to outsource jobs overseas? How caring and compassionate is the party in deporting undocumented immigrants or dreamers who have been living in the country showing good citizenship?

So this is my impression with the Republican Party who is in allies with the right wing conservatives. Most of my concerns are of religious in nature, the issue of money or the worship of money, and the treatment of people and if abortion is tied to social and economic issues then the Republican Party seriously have to fix itself. Is this just a pigment of my imagination as some of you might say?

You have got the openness of the evil of the left but you also have the evilness of the right hiding behind a fascade of religiousity and piousness. Who is more evil in your opinion?

Obama is a born leader who have far more life, cultural and social experiences which enhance is decisions in dealing with the people he governs. He has proven to be a very tough and a great leader facing touch challenges and adversities.

When things are very difficult everyone must come together for the betterment of the country as a whole. This is not the time to experiment with a different president. Vote for the goodness that it will do to your country and the world. Remember that you are voting for a political leader not a religious one. Religious leaders are chosen! 😉

Hi, Je333,

Interesting. Maybe there are those who think they are better today then they were 4 years ago. If the Russians Under Stalin could have really voted - they may have been thrilled with the first 5-year Plan on getting their economy to move beyond the 18th Century… and, maybe some type of majority would have been thrilled with the second 5-year plan … but, after a while, even the Russians figured out that socialism really does not work.

In my opinion Romney hit the nail on the head when he identified those who want Obama as essentially being entrapped by the entitlement mentality. But - just for a change, let’s say that taxing the rich is the right course of action to take! And, hey - I think that if we took about 95% of their surplus incomes over … say… anything over $20,000/year … we would have two major accomplishments: 1.) we got even - there obviously is some kind of payout in envy and 2.) we brought in money to the US Treasury! Sounds like a success story, eh? After all, isn’t the idea that government is to give to each according to his needs and take from each according to his ability?

But, maybe we need to take a look at some of the down-side to this logical extension of Obama’s economic policy. Seriously, where do you think the money in this money comes from? Even though the feds have the printing presses - and rreally do not create wealth and value and prosperity. If they did - well, then, just load up the paper and ink and have those presses put on automatic run until we all have all of this money. We could model ourselves on the post WW I Germany - where wheelbarrows full of money were pushed to the local bakery to buy bread. As I see it, the power, in this case, does not lie in the press - at least the printing press. You know, we just can not continuing borrowing money from China to give to Afghanastan and its neighbors. We are having a major melt-down in our foreign policy so that ‘Death to American’ is ringing in the streets of countries where we have spent billions.

I think there is a better way - but, it will mean that more people will actually have to look at how we create wealth and value and what it is we want to spend it on. As I recall the guys who had the mythical ‘Golden Goose’ were not satisfied with her laying abiliteis and thought they could open the goose up and get as many golden eggs as they wished. But, when they killed the golden goose, they found that not only did it have no stock-pile of eggs - it was now dead and would lay no more. Like us, these men fail to really understannd / appreciate how our economy works.

God bless
Depending on your social and economic status, Obama has not been destructive to the overall health of this country. Taxing the wealthy is the right thing to do. ObamaCare helps those who don’t have access to healthcare.

Catholics and anyone whose main vote is solely for abortion is inviting themselves into the gates of hell. Likewise, anyone who violates the 10 commandments, who woship the God of Mammon are throwing themselves into the lake of fire. A vote for Romney because you don’t believe that Jesus is God violates the top 2 commandments. A vote for Romney by rich and wealthy people to escape paying taxes violates “Thou shall not steal.” These are just a few examples.

My Catholic faith is not dependent on any political party. Your interpretation of my statement is totally skewed. We have an election with two viable options: the GOP or the Democratic Party. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan espouse values more in line with my Catholic faith and conservative beliefs. We obviously have different views over the Obama presidency, which I categorize as abysmal.

Hi, Je333,

In my opinion, your command of the English language is just fine - the problem, at least as I see it - lies in building you argument on sand. Let me explain - and I will just deal with just a few of your statements.

Can you produce any evidence that any poster has ‘…put their Catholic Faith…’ on a political party and not on God? Point out the moral evils that Obama has promoted is simply a matter of fact: abortions in ObamaCare when he said he would respect those who disagree with abortion, tax payer funded embryonic stem cell research, tax payer funded abortions in this country and as a part of his foreign policy initiative to get abortions legalized in countries that have prohibitied them, respect for conscience and the HHS mandate where we will have abortion provisions in the health insurance policies we are now required to get. Yes, all of these are a moral evil - and all trace their ancestory to Obama’s murderous disdain for the unborn.

The issue is not about Catholics putting their faith in a political party - and not God - but, rather listening to the ALL of the US Bishops condemn abortion, condemn this attack on religious liberty and condemn the HHS mandate. There has been no endorsement of the Republican Party - there really are others running for this office who do not want abortions and will work to stop the tax payer funding for this butchery.

Now, there may be a flip-side to this matter - and, that would be Catholics who have put their faith in the abortion promotion of Obama and Democratic Party. As I see it - these are people who have truly sold out on their Catholic Faith.

Concerning the argument for envy for those with money - and some type of organized effort through new laws to take their lawfully earned money away from them. This has no standing in Catholic Moral Theology.

Finally, cocering not changing Presidents … please note, it really is wisdom to understand when a mistake has been made and come Nov 6 we have a chance to correct it by voting Obama out of office. To say we got him in once so we must get him in again - tells me there has been precious little time spent understanding Obama’s track record in the area of promoting a national moral decline.

God bless

Since this is a question of voting for the lessor of two evils, I am confused how it became a debate on who is best? Seems to me that there is not much of a choice in this election. Both Obama and Romney have sold out to te special interest groups and that is who is controlling this election. Many times in the past, this question as been posed, and the same answer is to extend the two party system. Unfortunately that has never worked in the past and probably will not now because the Dems and Reps are too solidly entrenced by the power of money in the special interest groups. The majority, unfortunately does not rule, MONEY rules. A step in the right direction woud be to limit campaing contributions, eliminate PACS and force all polictical ads to identify who they represent, and perhaps most important, all ads should be fact checked and misleading ads should be pulled with penalties attached to the producer of the ad.

As a matter of fact, I don’t like either candidate. I will vote for whomever is the lessor evil in my mind, but I won’t share that. This is not a political platform and that would not be in answer to the original thread.

OK, you’re on - I have provided you with references on Catholic teachings about our obligation to do good and to work for the good of fellow citizens - how about you showing me a Catholic sources that actually backs up your position.
First let me be sure you understand what my position is. I am claiming that Church teaching does not demand that all faithful Catholics vote against Obama. But if individual Catholics (like you) want to conclude based on their informed conscience and reason that they personally must vote against Obama that position would be consistent with Church teaching. My claim is quite a weak claim and therefore quite easy to defend. And for a Catholic source that backs up my position I choose undoubtably one of your favorites: Archbishop Chaput. Here is a link to another thread where the Archbishop is quoted in an interview. In this interview he was specifically asked whether Catholic teaching could allow a faithful Catholic to vote for Obama. He answers the question by saying that he can only speak for himself. He then goes on to say how he personally could never vote for anyone who is pro-choice or pro-abortion. So why is it that Archbishop Chaput declines to make it a matter of Church teaching binding on all? Instead he speaks only as an individual. But you, when presented with the same question, have no trouble speaking for the entire Church. What makes it so easy for you to do what Archbishop Chaput would not do?

If you would simply recast your arguments as those of your informed conscience and not an automatic consequence of Church teaching, just like Archbishop Chaput did, then I would have no argument with you.

Hi, LeafByNiggle,

First - thank you for the link.

I am simply unable to give you the answer that would naturally flow from Archbishop Chaput’s statement. I guess this is simply a personal failure of mine - but, I simply do not understand how one can be against evil in general but not be equally against evil in particular. There is a distinction here that simply gets by me - and, believe me, I have honestly tried to look at this from several different views. I guess it is fine in theory - but, come November 6, we will not be voting for a theory.

There is no position on the ballot called “Evil” - all positions are occupied by sinful human beings. From every indication in all the reseaarch I have done - as I attempt to forecast the future - Obama has played every card he has held in his hand against the unborn - at no time did our Presdent ever side with the unborn deserving life or protection. He was not alone is this position - but, he is the only one with such a record running for President. I honestly see no way that Obama could or can change his position on this matter.

Romney is not 100% pro-life (like his V-P nominee is). And, yes, this too is of concern. I do, however, see him as not providing for tax payer funded abortions or demanding that abortions be included in healht insurnce. So, here we are - with 48 days to go before we vote - we are, to use a phrase confronting the ‘devil we know with the devil we do not know’.

Seriously, I (and maybe there is another confused soul on this thread) would truly appreciate a link that would actually explain the mechanics or philosophy or theology as to why this Archbishop would only speak for himself on the voting matter - but all of the US Bishops (and the Vatican) have condemned abortion and the HHS Mandate. Claiming that someone - especially a Catholic - can honestly vote for Obama (and the abortion policies he hand crafted and put into place) is beyond my ability. Admitted, finding personal limitations has never been a problem - ah, but dealing with them is another story! 😃

God bless

Obama voters: Please don’t forget that Obama expanded tax payer funding of EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH…wasting our tax $ on killing HUMAN EMBRYOS for medical research which has found ZERO cures. But I guess that doesn’t matter because he’s a christian and ‘cares’ about the poor? 😦
What’s troubling you, my brother? Do you have anything against a Christian who cares about the poor? Are you advocating that Christian shouldn’t care about the poor?

It’s clear that if we are comparing Obama with Romney, Romney is the lesser of the evils. Which one is endorsed by pro-life organizations? --Romney. Which one is endorsed by Planned Parenthood?–Obama.

Which of the two is the most radically pro-abortion? Obviously, Obama. Which one supports redefining marriage? Obama. Which one intends to suppress religious freedom? Obama. It’s no contest.

I would imagine that it shows a level of caring if one votes to allow them to be born.

I care about the poor. I just don’t think they should ALL be on Government programs. it makes them too dependent on handouts. On the other hand, there are numerous Christian organizations (Saint Vincent De Paul Society, Saint Francis food pantry in my city, Catholic Social Services/Catholic Charities, etc) that provide almost the exact same services. And the best part is: they aren’t the GOVERNMENT!

Oh, and there are those who CHEAT the system…

Also, Obama waived the work requirement. I think that’s pretty bad…there’s a difference between unable to work due to injury, illness or disability and able bodied that are just plain lazy (those might be the cheat the system ones).

Sorry, but I can’t vote for a Pro abortion candidate, even if he says he’s a christian. I had a democrat u.s.senator claim to be pro life, but he turned his back on the people who trusted him and voted for Obamacare. He betrayed pro lifers. I don’t vote Democrat EVER.

The problem is that the alternative to Obama is Romney. I’m leaning towards not voting for president at all. Mass will go to Obama anyway so my non vote would be strictly symbolic.

Romneycare covers abortion by the way. He can wiggle out of it by saying that he had nothing to do with that part of it but any true pro-lifer would choose to not implement something that funds it. I really don’t like him and would neve vote for him.

Certainly Romney is not perfect on the issues important to Catholics; he is just 100% more acceptable than Obama. It is, after all, the Obama administration which threatens to bankrupt or close down Catholic institutions which do not agree to violate their moral principles.

Of course, that’s just on the moral issues: abortion, homosexual marriage, religious liberty. When it comes to economic issues, I think that Obama will drive the country off the fiscal cliff much faster than any other candidate. And driving off that fiscal and debt cliff will hurt the poor worst of all.

Hi Tom!

“people would put their Catholic Faith on a political party as a dependancy.”

Sorry, there should have been “if” before “a dependancy.” 😃 Is that better? 😃
I never once envy people’s successes and wealth especially their money. I live by a principle that a person who has every material thing in the world but does not have God in him really has nothing but a person who has no material things and has only God in him has everything. This, however, does not mean that I won’t fight and advocate Jesus’ teachings about wealth and money and fight for those who are poor, neglected, abandoned, outcast, oppressed, marginalized, abused, manipulated, treated unfairly and unjustly, discrimated against, ostracised, etc… Jesus said, “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god” matthew 19:24 People really have to meditate by what he meant by the kingdom of God. Jesus also said to the rich man to sell all his possessions and give it to the poor before he can follow him. Again, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24… It goes on and on… I can’t stress this enough, Tom. I hear the homilies at Catholic Mass all time about money and wealth and Jesus teachings and these are what they teach… Which Catholic Church do you go to?

It is simply not Jesus way to turn his back on sinners. He hates the sins but loves the sinners. He does not get rid of them. He befriends them, interacts with them, heals and transforms them, and loves them… He uses everybody even Satan. He loves Satan as well! He lets evilness in this world because he knows something good will come out of it. It is better to use evilness to do goodness that to use goodness to do evilness. And this is what my impression is happening between the 2 major political parties.

God Bless,
je333

And you think that the services provided by religious charities is enough for the poor to survive on? There’s a limit on the number of people they can serve and help at the same time.

Just because there are people who cheat the system does not mean that the government programs must be abolished. Do you know what I really feel about healthcare and education? I feel that Catholic Church should provide free education and healthcare and even food to all it’s members so that we don’t have to depend on the government. But that is too much wishful thinking, huh? 😉

And finally, there’s nothing wrong being a pro life and supporting Obamacare. As I said again and again, being a pro life is not only about your support in nonlegalization of abortion but also for healthcare of all people and life in general, and that means to support education and healthcare that Obama is providing for the poor and disavantaged, protection for the enviroment, for the undocumented immigrants, for the elderly, etc…

But you have already made up your mind so as long as I see the evilness in the Republican Party that I mentioned in my previous posts, I cannot simply vote for that party either. I never voted Republican, ever! NEVER!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I am a pro life, my brother and have marched at pro life rallies! But voting for romney will not stop abortion.
Not right away, of course. But the next president will be nominating justices for the SC that could make a difference. Obama will not.
