Do you ever cry during Mass?

You can add me to your numbers. In fact, I got teary-eyed at Mass tonight. Many times, just after receiving the Eucharist, I get teary-eyed thinking about Gods love for me. I have sobbed after Confession when I truly felt the Lords mercy. While not an emotional person at all, sometimes at Church, I cannot help but cry!

Sometimes at Mass, I start to cry when I think that our Protestant brothers and sisters are not able to receive such tangible gifts of God`s mercy and love for us in the sacraments. I know most of them our content in their faith, so they do not know what they are missing, but it makes me incredibly sad anyway.

It has overwhelmed me to know, that no matter how bad things may get sometimes, our Lord is with me, carrying me through the hard times. So that makes me cry at Mass as well. When I am feeling closest to God, I cannot help but cry.

I have to admit, it was a relief to stumble across this thread. It makes me feel less embarrassed!!!

Sincerely,

Maria1212

😃 Just had to share, that it happened again this morning after receiving Jesus in Holy Communion! 😃

God is good!

I do sometimes. I do feel slightly embarrassed, but the Mass is so beautiful that sometimes I just can’t help but be moved to tears.

I’ve never cried during mass. It’s a beautiful, pious thing I’m sure, but it’s just not party of my “spirituality”. 🙂

Nicholas Goudanus1 had been working in Germany and Austria alongside Peter Canisius since 1550. He was a selfless worker in the Lord’s vineyard and, apparently, thought it would be good to have the gift of tears. Thus he wrote to Ignatius asking him to pray that the gift be granted him. In his response Ignatius, through his secretary Polanco, informs Goudanus that the gift of tears is not necessary for a fruitful apostolate. To have a heart filled with compassion for the miseries of one’s neighbor, and to seek to alleviate them are as pleasing to God as the gift of tears. Ignatius ends by encouraging him to keep his will strong and reminds him that this will be enough for his perfection. The language of the letter is Italian Ep. 5:713-715].
Code:
      The peace of Christ.
My dear father in Christ Jesus:
I received your letter of October 12, and it gives me great edification to see the desire you have of being of help to souls in Germany, not only by preaching and other external means, but also with your tears, which gift you desire from the giver of all good things.
As to the first of your desires, to be of definite help to the neighbor by the external means of preaching and so forth, we will beg of Christ unconditionally to deign to* give to his voice the voice of power* [Ps. 68:33], and to the administration of the sacraments the desired fruitfulness. But the gift of tears may not be requested unconditionally, nor is it, absolutely speaking, necessary and proper for all indiscriminately. However, I have taken the matter up with our Father Ignatius, and I myself have asked of God, and will continue to ask, that our Lord grant it to you in the measure that will be good for the end that your reverence has in seeking it, namely, the help of your own soul and the souls of your neighbor. *A hard heart shall fear evil at the last* [Sir. 3:26], but the heart, my dear father, that is full of the desire of helping souls, as is that of your reverence, cannot call itself hard in God's service. If in the will and the superior part of the soul, this heart feels compassion for the miseries of one's neighbor, and seeks to do what it can to relieve them and performs those services which a man of determined will undertakes, tears are not necessary for such a heart, nor other tenderness of heart.
Some indeed have tears naturally, when the higher motion of the soul makes itself felt in the lower, or because God our Lord, seeing that it would be good for them, allows them to melt into tears. But this does not mean that they have greater charity or that they are more effective than others who enjoy no tears. They are no less moved in the higher part of the soul—that is, in a strong and energetic will, which is the proper act of charity in God's service and the good of souls—than they who abound in tears.
I will tell you, reverend father, what I really think. And that is that, even if it were in my power to allow this gift of tears to some, I would not give it, because it would be no help to their charity, and would be harmful both to their heads and their health and, consequently, stand in the way of every act of charity. Do not lose heart, then, because of this absence of external tears, but keep your will strong and energetic, and manifest it in your actions. This will be sufficient for your own personal perfection, the help of others, and the service of God. Remember that the good angels do what they can to preserve men from sin and obtain God's honor. But they do not lose courage when men fail. Our Father has much praise for those of Ours who in this sense imitate the example of the angels. No more for the present, except to commend myself to your reverence's prayers.
      From Rome, November 22, 1553.

Aww…Yes, I have felt this way, at times. I sometimes find myself welling up after I receive communion, when I come back to my pew, and pray. The humble way I feel…the way I feel so unworthy for Christ’s body and blood…it’s very moving…beyond words, really. :o

Great thread!
Oh yes often and how enjoyable it is but i used to cover up and then thought that everyone won’t cry because everyone is at a different space with God. And that’s all right I love being where I am but want to be better so no more trying for me to cover up, what a joy to share my tears with the one who gave all for me what a joy.

God bless

Most definitely–my tears have occured while I’m processing forward to receive Eucharist. I feel so small, so unbelievably unworthy, that I repeat the words “only say the Word and I shall be healed” while I go forward. Gets me every time.

Tweety, I have only been writing here this year. I found the web site by asking the question search? CRY DURING MASS. And I began writing. But I origonly wanted to find GIFT OF TEARS. And I just found it today on this same site!! I also have gentle tears begining at the Concecration, and thru receiving the Holy Eucharist. I will probably write in that thread also. I hope all of you do. They have great info! Sincerely, Franny

Thank you Franny… I only found CAF this year too! Praise Jesus! The Holy Spirit can move a person in such a way. I have been teary before in Mass, but what i experience after receiving Jesus is*** different and awesome, *** my heart overflows with love.

God is good all the time and all the time God is good! As our old parish priest used to get all the kids to say after a school Mass.

God bless you and yours.

a friend almost always cries at the consecration. it’s one of the things that caught her new fiance’s eye/ear. 🙂

It has never happened to me but it did once during the Eucharistic Adoration.
Oh, I go through that! It’s a little less formal, a little less rushed at EA. It’s not just the Mass we can find His a physical sign of His presence, and it gets me every time.

I find myself tearing up at the consecration once in a while, and after I receive the Host is when I get that overwhelmingly peaceful, grateful, burning feeling in my heart.

or when praying. or when listening to good Christian music. or when just walking or driving along and something you see, hear, or think hits you. :crying:

I’ve cried many times during Mass.

I’m a cradle Cathlic that didn’t start to fully understand the faith until 2002. Before then, I would still attend Mass but not 100% understand what I was experiencing. (I have always been a late bloomer.)

Now that I’m on the path God set for me, and where I’m happiest, it is amazing to me to participate in the Eucharist. About the time that the Eucharist approaches, I start to get teary-eyed if I’m in a beautiful church like St. Michael’s Cathedral in the Archdiocese of Toronto, St. Mary’s in Kitchener, etc.

I also cry some times when the celebrant really gets to me. That is a combination of the readings, homily and delivery. Fr. Con at my 7pm Sunday Mass gives the Mass in a way that I like. I miss his Masses if I am out of town.

I also cry at midnight Masses and Vigils. 🙂

I don’t cry, but sometimes I have to force back tears, especially when they sing beautiful hymns during the Consecration of the Eucharist.I cried yesterday because I was thinking of the Lord’s crucifixion.

One Mass as I was watching the priest and 2 deacons during the Consecration, I started crying and thinking “that’s what it means to be a Catholic”

*Yup, I did cry:crying: once or twice after I was moved to realize the need for my personal conversion. Was embarassed too (was still in high school with parents and siblings beside me:eek: ) but since nobody late voiced out that it wasn’t okay, I felt alright aftrwards.👍 *

I experienced the same situation too.At that moment I felt so embarrassed but i cant control it,I really dont know whats happenning,so I just let it out…& to my amazement my mom experienced it too.We cried at the same time but in different place.I guess God really works in a mysterious ways.
