Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?

Well, now we know that impalass is either not a Catholic or is nominally Catholic but has never learned anything about Catholic doctrine.

That explains it all.
I figured out right from the start that she gets her information about the Church from secular television and secular works of fiction. I doubt that she even owns a Catechism.

Not only that but his original intent was supposed to be to get others’ opinions on whether priests should marry. He wasn’t interested in our answers. He just wants to argue and slam the Church and drag every negative thing he can into the mix. All practicing Catholics here are well aware of the problems of the Church.

The Church will not, and should not, change Her dogma, traditions, doctrines and disciplines because a bunch of polls say people think She should. If impalass doesn’t like the Church he can go start another protestant church although its getting a little crowded out there. And by the way, yes, the protestant church is bigger here, but to make that claim you have to count ALL denominations.

I would like to know if you think priests should be allowed to marry and still stay in the priesthood… If so, Why or why not??
I think certain orders of priests should be allowed to marry and others not. It is a man made rule and I don’t see why it is even an issue to change.

This a totally ridiculous line of thought of course, but I must add that castration removes the body’s ability to produce testosterone and as a result, no desire. Which is why they castrated eunichs in a harem.
Talk to my dog.

Suupah: I don’t think we’re supposed to be putting up political posters in here. Might want to check with a moderator on that.

Back to the topic. I remember a priest once saying to me that if you make marriage for priests optional, you make it virtually mandatory. Every move to a new parish by a single priest would make him subject to the matchmakers that are in all of them. All would be considered potentially marriageable whether they wanted to be or not. Long-term failure to get married would invite suspicion as to why they did not get married.

Having said that, and with all due respect to the Eastern Churches, and realizing that the Church may well change her mind on it someday, she isn’t doing it right now, so it’s an idle speculation. No one could seriously deny that many of the post-VII changes have not been for the better. “Cafeteriaism” is rampant in more ways people thinking somehow they can pressure the Church into ordaining women or married men. It seems to me that if the Church wants to visit the subject, she ought to wait until the worst dissidents die off before taking a look at it. A lot of speculation, rebellion and ill will was created when the “spirit of VII” people had all these expectations that the Church was going to turn into what they wanted it to be, yet it didn’t. I see no reason for the Church to start that kind of wild speculation again while those folks are still around.

From what I understand, castrating them only caused them to be unable to reproduce. They still had a very strong sex drive, and the women were willing to accomodate them, because there was little or no chance of ever getting caught.

Talk to my dog.
:rotfl: I don’t think you can compare dogs with humans though. Have you not ever seen a female dog jump on another dog and mimic a male.
Why do you think castration talk, either chemically or physically, has been alked about in the judicial system as a way to deal with sex offenders.

Yes.

Okay…mercygate agrees with you so I’m going to have to check it out. Especially why they would be discussing the use of it for sex offenders.

Priests are following in the footsteps of Christ. It is only man made if you want to call Jesus the man.

P.S. If Obama gets in, I am leaving the country…

Yes priests should have the option to marry. Who are the hundreds of pastors from other denominations. Were talking thousands of priests from the catholic church not hundreds, and lets not forget protestants outnumber catholics over 2:1 in the USA. and catholic priests charged are right up there. In the news all the time. Its sad but true.

F A C T S: Bankruptcy…Diocese of Spokane Washington Bishop Sklstad. Millions in debt sex abuse scandal…Arch Diocese of Oregon bankruptcy same thing…Diocese of Tuscon Arizona bankrupt.same…Diocese of San Diego California Bishop Brom $100 owing in lawsuits…Canada St. George Diocese in province of newfoundland Canada. Bankrupt…these have all occured in the past 2 -3 years. How many more to come? These are facts my friend. Not slamming the church just presenting factual information that all should know. Being honest. Thats what a good person is.
A good person? You call yourself a good person JUDGING others? Remember:
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.------James 1:26

So Peter shouldn’t have been a priest? The hundreds or thousands of priests that were married up to the time that this became the discipline of the Latin Rite shouldn’t have been priests or didn’t serve in the person of Christ? The thousands of Catholic priests that do not belong to the Latin Rite whom are married do not serve in the person of Christ?

Please, have strong faith in your belief…believe celibacy makes a better priest…but don’t argue from ignorance that insults the thousands of married priests…including the first pope.
I was speaking of today of the Roman Catholic Priests of the Latin Rite, in the future I will try to be more specific for those who might be offended, I surely did not try to offend anyone. Seems to me that some people assume too much sometimes too.

Celibacy of the Clergy
Speaking, for the moment, only of Western Christendom, the candidates for orders are solemnly warned by the bishop at the beginning of the ceremony regarding the gravity of the obligation which they are incurring. He tells them:

You ought anxiously to consider again and again what sort of a burden this is which you are taking upon you of your own accord. Up to this you are free. You may still, if you choose, turn to the aims and desires of the world (licet vobis pro artitrio ad caecularia vota transire). But if you receive this order (of the subdiaconate) it will no longer be lawful to turn back from your purpose. You will be required to continue in the service of God, and with His assistance to observe chastity and to be bound for ever in the ministrations of the Altar, to serve who is to reign.

By stepping forward despite this warning, when invited to do so, and by co-operating in the rest of the ordination service, the candidate is understood to bind himself equivalently by a vow of chastity. He is henceforth unable to contract a valid marriage, and any serious transgression in the matter of this vow is not only a grievous sin in itself but incurs the additional guilt of sacrilege.

This is good to know, but not necessary. It is totally irrelevant to ask what I think. Church doctrine/dogma is not changeable. It is part of the deposit of faith given to us by Christ through the Apostles, and Apostolic Succession through the Popes.
The priests should not and will not be allowed to marry for these reasons.

You have the part about base salary correct. Most, but not all, get free rent…most do NOT have free board. Some get a car allowance, some don’t, it’s up to the Parish. Dental plans, health care and especially pensions are NOT included in most priests compensation. The ones I have spoken to pay their own pensions. SOME priests do quite well on the stipends…some do not…you’d be surprised by the number of times I’ve seen people NOT give a stipend to a priest for a wedding, or a funeral, or a baptism done outside mass…and the stipend can not be required. On Christmas some priests do VERY WELL with the gifts they recieve.
…and may I ask who you think you are that you have your nose in their business anyway and then bring it to these boards?

By the way, eunuchs could not complete sexual relations even if they did have the desire as testosterone is gone with castration and a man will not be able to function. That’s why men with sexual problems have long been given testosterone.

I did find this on Wikipedia.
Similarly, testosterone-depletion treatment (either surgical removal of both testicles or chemical castration) is used to greatly reduce sexual drive or interest in those with sexual drives, obsessions, or behaviors, or any combination of those that may be considered deviant.

I learned some interesting stuff on eunuchs too. 😊 Anyway, intestesting side trip but back to the subject now.

Where is that coming from? I don’t think it was meant critically. Just explaining that priests do not live in the lap of luxury with every need taken care of. True, they do not take a vow of poverty but most still live with very modest means.

Yes, whoever said here that priests have the best dental care is absurd. I’ve met many priests who really need to have their teeth fixed. They live humble lives. They help the poor.
