Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?

i am concerned with the wway the Church seems to hold men to vows they took when they were in their teens and 20s… I know of priests who dislike the perpetual celibacy rule…

I heard of this one case where the process of laicization took so long, the couple just went ahead and got married before it was finished… Maybe they wanted to have children before they were in their 70s or something…
You know a LOT of priests, a lot? Why would a priest discuss his celibacy with you, especially a woman? With anyone? Don’t believe it girl, nice try though. Geez…

No priest makes vows in his teens.

Twenties? There is no reason why a person in his twenties, who has been properly prepared should be incapable of making a serious vow, even such a vow as celibacy.

Very true. But even so, when married people have periods of continence, we still have the other person in our lives. It IS a big difference. Continence is not the same as celibacy.

i have heard of some.

Well, then i will hold you to absolutely everything you said while in your 20s…

OK… so i am going to hold you to every thing you said whne you were 18…
That’s alright with me, but I didn’t make any vows to anyone when I was 18 though. I was living a celibate life then, as I had for all of my life at that time. So, if you want to pickle, I had been celibate for longer than your ten years.😛

Okay, I just read thru all up to here. It’s all starting to make sense.
Yes, sometimes women fall in love with priests. As was stated earlier they have some training on how to deal with that I’m sure. It’s not unusual for teachers, doctors, etc. either. But I can only imagine how difficult it must be. And I’m sure sometimes priests fall in love too.

Distracted…if this is true you weren’t forthright with us. The Church is what it is. It can’t be changed because you are going thru something that has probably been going on since the beginning of time. If this is for real and you truly love him you need to back off and give him back to God. He needs to be able to pray, reflect, and pray some more about his priestly ministry. He can’t make a decision based on lust. If your relationship, whatever it is, is causing him doubt, he needs to work it out himself. I personally cannot imagine the guilt I would feel if I played any part in this, and if you are truly a devout Catholic as you profess, I can’t imagine you want that on your conscience either. Perhaps you are his cross to bear…I am sad for you.

Don’t mean to be mean spirited but if he left her for a younger woman instead of repenting and going back then he obviously was not meant to be in the priestly ministry and it can’t all be blamed on the original woman.
What a great sadness that even a man like that can be ordained, a pity that those choosing priests are so easily fooled, of course God is the final judge and the woman is not the sinner but the man who turned from Vows to resort to simple pleasure. The training of priests is supposed to be a standard that prevents temptations from eventuating into mortal sins.

where do you get this 10 yr thing? Just because that is what i used in the title of the other Thread? That was just an arbitrarily-chosen number…

(sigh)… more presumption… 🤷

but i forgive you… 😃

The vows are made to God, not to man.
i know someone who promised God he woiuld give up some addiction he had… He failed that over and over.

So is he on his way to Hell?

Some people seem so… unforgiving… lacking in compassion… lacking in understanding… empathy…

Its like Oh, i would NEVER do THAT!!

hmmm… :hmmm:

Reading comprehension problems??

I did not say i know priests… I said i know OF priests (i read a lot)… Geez…

We’d sure have a lot more priests if they were allowed to marry. Did Jesus forbid his apostles to marry? What is the Biblical foundation for refusing them to marry?

No we wouldn’t. We’d just have a whole bunch of divorced ex-priests, and a ton of alimony for the Church to pay, if we did that.

For me it wasn’t even the fact that it initially happened. Who am I to judge? Even the saints were sinners. What got me was that he dumped her for another and went on down the road which struck me as amplifying the original sin and obviously no contrition there.

Do you believe everything you read? What are your sources and please site them.

You can also leave out the insults.

You all are nuts… No one said anything about this kind of thing…
Perhaps you are his cross to bear…I am sad for you.
perhaps people here need to stop PRESUMING…

Why do you ASSUME i have this kind of thing going on…

that is just plain nuts… to assume such things… and run with it…

the original topic was celibacy… how i have been celibate for a long time and how it is un-natural … (though sometimes necessary and good for awhile… AWHILE)…

Anyway… have a good one…

and if you are having an affair with a priest or nun, i suggest you back off, give him/her some space, give him/her some time to pray… and you really need to give this to God… and let go… it is not right to lust after a priest (or nun). they have taken vows that are forever… You ought to be ahsamed of yourself… 😃

Who said anything about going to hell?

Who are “some people”? And why are** you **judging them?

What’s with the assumptions that anybody is judging anyone?
**
“Hmmm?”**
