Does anyone else feel under attack in the upcoming election?

oh my goodness your post encouraged me to look into it and sadly so many instances I’ve read where people got beat up just for a sign. An 82 year old man had a trump sign ripped out of his hands and he got beat up, also in Oklahoma… I don’t know how to link articles but found it simply on the web. they weren’t protesting either

Well, it’s just city council and school board in a small city, so, not a big deal really. 😉

This stuff isn’t all that new, it just gets more coverage since it’s Trump.

I’m old and remember when Nixon ran for second term. It was ugly out there. The fact that he got caught pulling dirty tricks made it way worse. If you watch old movies made in that era it captures a lot, but most people have died or don’t remember. Nixon is now remembered as some sort of foreign policy wiz who got a bum rap, not as what he was.

he’s from Australia and mostly only sees rabid Trump supporters on here.

It ain’t like that in real life.
Except I would not use the term rabid, just passionate. This forum and the media gives me the impression everyone almost is a Trump supporter. I was surprised that MarthaSo has a different experience in her neighbourhood.

I have a conservative neighbor whose signs were either stolen or burned, and his American flag on the side of his house was cut down.

The day after the 2016 election I parked my car across the street from our local library (which I went into), and in front of the local Democratic headquarters. My car had a prolife license plate and a Trump sticker. When I came out there was a note under my windshield wiper. I cannot write down what was written on the note as it would get me banned from the Forum.

I think both sides do stuff like this. It is unfortunate that our culture has lost its civility.

Sad to hear that. 😒

What gets under my nerves is a tactic by which Side A claims to be the righteous one due to an anecdote about someone from Side B issuing threats or doing something violent. Therefore all people on Side B are NOT righteous.

People do it on every side of every cause. It’s the sin of Schadenfreude, rejoicing over an act of violence because your side can score some cheap political points from it.

I also don’t do any signs or bumper stickers. My private property is not an advertisement for anything and never will be. That said, I live in a very blue area. There are lots of signs for Biden but I have yet to see one for Trump. I would feel it was safe to put up a Biden sign, Black Lives Matter sign, or All Are Welcome Here, or LGBT flag, but unsafe to put out a Trump sign or pro-life sign. Things are on edge here and I and many are concerned about potential violence after the election, no matter who wins. Praying a lot.

Otherwise, not any more than normal.
Yup. I think there’s a temptation to make every election a life or death struggle, and it usually just isn’t. I’m not saying it doesn’t matter, but it’s not like the sun will explode one way or another.

Just to put my cards on the table, I loathe Donald Trump. I think he’s possibly the most embarrassing oaf to ever hold national office. Having said that, if he wins another term, life will go on. I’m not going to herd my family into a bunker or flee to Canada. It won’t be catastrophic.
Me, too! I’ve survived many presidencies where I voted for the other guy. Life goes on. What I’ve noticed about sign posters is that they feel some great need to let everyone know who they’re rooting for. Why? It also goes beyond a sign in their yard…they’ll have banners and multiple flags of their candidate and the US flag so everyone will know that support a candidate AND are good Americans. A bit over much to me.

No matter who wins this election, be ready for the media to show the most over the top reactions from the losing side. Thus, many will believe that that’s how everyone is reacting. NO. Most will quietly accept the result and go on with their day…but that doesn’t sell well. We already have posters here showing crying college student from 2016 when Trump won…like that how the entire Democrat party reacted…because it sells papers, it drives clicks. If Biden wins, I’m sure the news will find crying Republicans, too. Don’t buy into it.

So to clarify, I meant under spiritual attack. But man I’m sorry there’s any instances of intimidation. I’ve had people whistle at me when I ride my bike, which is funny because I’m male and so are the ones whistling. Maybe it’s the pink bandana … I have daughters so lots of stuff in my house is pink.

I had a long conversation a few elections ago about a pro-choice candidate in a school board election. She had an education background, three kids in the public school system, a head for finances and good ideas; her opponent was pro-life and retired and had no kids or grandkids in the school district and ran on the sole notion of cutting the school budget. I had a few … terse … conversations with other parishioners because I supported the pro-choice candidate and I had no qualms with it. What on earth can a pro-choice politician do on a public school board? There’s literally nothing for her to influence.

This isn’t the same situation. I’m reading the USCCB’s 1999 letter on Forming Consciences and I’m stuck between “vote against abortion” and “vote to protect health care, vote against racial discrimination.” That hits at the national, state and county levels.

I am thankful to have the vote, though. If one of these leaders were simply foisted on me I’d take up arms, too, like in Northern Ireland.

Oh I hate the way I feel the media is trying to show a single, unified story. There is much more that isn’t being shown and much that is being represented, and I feel I can say that without defending either of the yokels who want the top job.

I remember when Clinton won. If memory serves, some hung-ho young reporter stuck a microphone in Barbara Bush’s face and asked how she felt. “We lost, get over it,” was her answer. The poor little dude didn’t get the reaction he hoped for.

Turn off the news cycle in your life. Moderate your intake to what is necessary.

If you mean “under attack by my fellow Catholics who won’t stop harping on the election” then yes.
I think Satan has played us off against each other quite well. His power is not political, but power to tempt us from charity to anger, resentment, and pride.

Is it certain that we separate the physical attack from the spiritual? People who physically attack may be led by satan. (yes I know that sounds so silly to some) but in my right spiritual mind I would never physically assault someone over a sign even if I thought it represented satan himself, and I live in Babylon!
I’d like to think I’m somewhat healthier spiritually than to do something like that. I’d like to believe most people are healthy spiritually whether they know it or not.

It’s disgusting behavior, no doubt about that. What has this country come to? No need to answer; I already know. However, if you live in upstate New York, I think you’re relatively safe supporting Trump. But Biden, I’m not so sure.
