Does your church use Communion patens?

I’m going to date myself. I was an alter server when the communion rails were done away with and the choice of recieving in hand came about. Shortly after the choice of how to receive communion came the pattens were retired. Only place I remember seeing them used now is at the latin Mass. I kind of miss not kneeling to receive our lord. Never thought about it until attending the latin Mass. Didn’t understand much but felt better kneeling for communion.

You can still kneel if you please and no one can do anything about it.

No my church does not, nor I have found one in my Diocese that does (unfortunately). I guess the real question is are they required. I would say yes (while many would disagree). The GIRM states that the “altar plate” for the reception of communion by the faithful is an item that the priest is to have set out in preparation before mass. So if it is one of the preparation items for the priest to have in place; then I say common sense requires its use.

Jiminy, I voted yes and was surprised to see that there are more nos than yeses! I haven’t been to THAT many churches, but I think I can only remember one church that I’ve been to that didn’t use patens.

I would think you’d WANT communion patens…

Well. If I become the priest of a parish that doesn’t use patens, I’ll change it so that they do. 😃
I can only remember being to one parish that used them and even then it was only the main aisle that had them…

At my RCC, never. At my ECC, always.
???

Is there an Eastern Church in which the use of a paten rather than a cloth is regular, rather than a latinization?

We have two servers hold the cloth, one on either side of the priest.

Now, if we could only get the last couple of people to stop grasping it to their chins . . .

You are probably correct in regard to your small parish but my parish is much bigger and 99% of the people go to communion. We have lay ministers of communion who perform their ministries in a reverent orderly fashion. It’s not so much about how much time it takes (but that is a factor for most people) it’s about doing so reverently. The priest would feel overwhelmed and rushed if he were distributing alone…not to mention that most people in my parish communicate from the Cup as well. As I stated before…this is a wonderful result of Vatican II that so many people go to communion.
I misunderstand the word “paten”. We call the small plate that the priest gives commun ion from, the paten. These we use at daily Masses for their are from 5 to 9 that attend so the paten(small plate) is sufficient. We did have a larger plate for the weekend Masses but we have since acquired two communion bowls and these are a blessing. Because of their shape the Eucharist is protected. What you are calling “paten” no, we have not used a paten in the 30 years I have been in the parish.

First of all I’ve seen communion bowls used before though not in my parish; they’re regarded as types of ciborium’s or ciboria which don’t entail the use of patens.

Communion Patens are hand held patens
The Chalice also has a paten.

Sundays at EF – paten always used, only priest distributes, at altar rail.

Weekdays at OF – paten always used, only priest distributes, outside altar rail.

Only time I go to OF on Sunday is occasionally for Bishop Morlino’s Mass – paten always used, only Bishop Morlino and priest-concelebrant or vested deacon distribute, no altar rail there.

Diocese of Madison Cathedral Parish is headed (back) in the right direction. Now we just need a cathedral…

As a server at EF Mass on Sundays, I have seen many particles of Our Lord’s Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity fall on the paten. They are most definitely not just for show.

It sounds like the parish/diocese should change their supplier of altar-breads. There should not be so many particles. The altar-breads should be made with sealed edges.

Mine does not, which I find unfortunate. Redemptionis Sacramentum seems to require it when saying, “[93.] The Communion-plate for the Communion of the faithful should be retained, so as to avoid the danger of the sacred host or some fragment of it falling.” But in the same paragraph, there is a footnote pointing to GIRM 118, which says, “Likewise should be prepared: … c) on the credence table: … if appropriate, the paten.”

Therefore I cannot decide whether or not the Communion paten is required in the OF.
The Church I went to doesn’t. They just handed the Eucharist straight out from the Chalice.

The church ive been attending for the past 3+ years uses one......but its TLM only, Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter.

The former PP of the local parish re-introduced the paten; but the current one tossed it because he claimed its use was an insult to the laity!!!
Nothing about disrespect towards our Lord! 🤷

I think I could complain but I think the point has been made already. 😃

Yes, we use them, because we are a Traditional Latin Mass community 😃

This thread has surprised me: sadly, in this country (Australia), the number of OF priests who make use of the paten seems to be virtually zero.
There`s a stupid saying about the risk of fallen Host particles: “Let the angels take care of it.”!!! 😦
But that’s just like a lazy husband saying “Just let the wife take care of it”.

All precautions should be made. No one wants to see the Host on the floor…
