Does your church use Communion patens?

Mine does not, which I find unfortunate. Redemptionis Sacramentum seems to require it when saying, “[93.] The Communion-plate for the Communion of the faithful should be retained, so as to avoid the danger of the sacred host or some fragment of it falling.” But in the same paragraph, there is a footnote pointing to GIRM 118, which says, “Likewise should be prepared: … c) on the credence table: … if appropriate, the paten.”

Therefore I cannot decide whether or not the Communion paten is required in the OF.

It is not required. That portion of RS is a (too-little-kept, regrettably) suggestion.

At the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis, the paten is always used. They celebrate a beautiful OF. Here in Rolla Missouri, I have never seen a paten. I’m not sure why, as the altar servers just sit down after communion and watch the priest and EMC’s administer communion…

I see. What an unfortunate pity.

Same here. Our servers kneel after their communion until everyone else is done, but no patens to be found.

I can’t imagine why any parish would chose not to use them.

Oh right — that’s from the olden days.

Yes - my parish uses them…every…single…time.

My RCC doesn’t use them, and I wonder if there is a correlation in music styles to paten use? Are OCP/GIA Churches paten-less? If the faithful hear chant, will there be patens?

The paten is not required. If it were, we would be instructed with the word would “must”, not “should”.

I thought they were always used. The only time I haven’t seen them used in when it is a very small mass without altar servers. 🤷

Our parish does not, but we are regularly instructed on how to receive in the hand, prividing for a safe transfer. My distress is that the first time I received at our new parish, I dropped the Host. I just picked it up and put it in my mouth. Sometimes I am a little shakey. Now the priest puts it firmly in my hand, and I am way more careful.

Our parish used to use them frequently, then a stopped suddenly a few years ago. No one seems to remember why.

What is a Communion paten? I think I know but I’m not sure …
A small, generally gold, plate on a stick of some sort that is held under the chin (or hand…) of each person as he communicates, which is used so that any tiny crumb that breaks off of the host does not fall to the floor. It is to prevent Eucharistic desecration. They used to be absolutely required.

I could never really understand that change. One day my job was to make sure any fragments of Holy Communion could not drop to the floor, the next day it was no longer necessary. It all seemed to go downhill after that.

Nope, we have a pretty traditional, although in English, Mass at 8am, no paten. We then a very contemporary Mass at 10, again no patens.

My parish uses patens, but sometimes there are not enough altar servers to accompany each minister of Holy Communion.
