But then you end up with a group of people that do not represent the country at large. According to a recent estimate, there were 18 black delegates to the Republican convention out of 2,472 delegates in total. Doesn’t that disturb you at all that the number of black delegates at the convention is less than 1% even though black people make up more than 12% of the US population?
I guess if one is obsessed with race that makes sense. But if the Party were truly diverse there wouldn’t be a reason for these rules

Whoa. That’s…remarkably low.

Montana and Idaho will never be NY either, whats the point?
I guess this is the point:

Hence the need for affirmative action programs. When left to their own devices, people favor those who look like them, sound like them, and are part of their own social groups.

It’s a bit creepy if the RNC has no plan in place to ensure that there’s a diverse group of delegates.

What difference does it make in the makeup of delegates? The votes are already pledged and determined regardless of the gender or race of the delegates. You could send 2000 dogs to the convention and it wouldn’t make one iota difference. The only reason to ensure diversity is to make it look good on camera. It’s a way to say look at all our minorities fighting against an entrenched white male power base.

As to the black RNC delegates only representing 1% compared to 12% of the US population, don’t we always hear that less than 10% of blacks vote republican? So isn’t it possible that it is simply a matter of it being representative of the small sliver of blacks that stand with the party? In reality I doubt it has anything to do with that since republicans aren’t really interested in symbolic acts to make people feel warm and gooey inside.

And it’s fine with Republicans if this means some groups are grossly underrepresented?
Is representation for the sake of representation now a virtue? Is it now a grave moral evil that people should be chosen based on merit instead of trying to fill a quota?

Actually, what you say is not true. My department is one of the most diverse on campus and it has nothing to do with affirmative action. We all could care less about affirmative action. We just hire the best available, regardless of skin pigmentation and their sex. There is no natural inclination to favor those who look like us. Maybe democrats cannot be trusted, I will concede that point to you.

I know you like to tout your department and kudos for working in such a positive environment. But that’s not typical – in employment, housing, and education opportunities.

It was originally reported by the Washington Post:
Last month, the Republican party’s national director for African-American initiatives sent an email to a number of reporters, including our Jonathan Capehart, delineating the diversity of the delegates at the party’s convention. The big number was 18 – out of 2,472 delegates in total.
A figure that’s lower than 1 percent.
Lovelace told Capehart that his estimate from last month was still preliminary (hence the dotted line, above) and that the party was working with outside groups to “ensure people from diverse backgrounds are able to participate during the convention.” Attempts to contact Lovelace on Tuesday morning were not successful.

I guess they rounded up a lot more African Americans after this Republican party national director for African-American initiatives sent his email.

This actually has very little to do with race and almost everything to do with income. One of the reason that poor people in general are denied access to affordable housing is because of excessive regulation of housing.
