It is sad, but I don’t see any American politician who has not flip flopped? Can you give us the name of one living American politician who has not flip flopped?
Not only that but would you want one?

“I believe the same thing I did 10 years ago. No amount of experience or education has changed my mind” is not exactly a good leadership quality…

Go ahead and show me proof that Rand Paul has flipped on:

Abortion
Gun Control
Healthcare

So you support warrant-less collection of emails and phone calls?

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
-Ben Franklin
Yes. I would be a little flattered if the government was taking the time to read through my emails and listen to my phone calls - it’s pretty harmless banal stuff. They are tracking this information in records, not reading it - that would be impossible. Seriously, I understand where you are coming from. But the USA is in a vulnerable position with regard to foreign and home grown Islamic terrorism. Most citizens understand this threat and support the reasonable security measures that are necessary to give us a better chance to effectively combat it. We need timely access to communication to monitor potential threats. The government cannot run Amtrak; it is not the KGB - they don’t care what you are saying in your email and are not even reading it. Google might be. I worry much more about them - they are more competent, private sector types.

As far as important issues on my list right now, I put this at about 37. I think Rand Paul’s dramatic fall as rebel anti-GOP leader to be replaced by big government Mexican hating Donald Trump confirms that many feel the same way. Besides, Rand is dead in the water on foreign policy. Libertarianism is ridiculous nonsense, IMHO. Right up there with Trump.

And that Any other Republican candidate gave money to and supported the candidacy of Hillary Clinton

What a crock. You’re willing to sacrifice the very freedom that folks like ISIS would love to seize. What’s the point if you through the baby out with the bathwater?

My question was to give a living American politician who has not flip flopped on some issue:
Rand Paul has flip flopped on at least 5 issues:
  1. Defense spending
  2. Air strikes on ISIS
  3. Aid to Israel
  4. Diplomacy with Iran
  5. SS marriage (From letting the states decide, to saying it is a moral crisis)

Chris Cristie and Rand Paul had their confrontation during the debate and most people agree Cristie got the better part of it, even if you disagree with that; a salient point to me is where CC said it was “easy for the Senators to blow hot air in committee rooms in their theorizing” (paraphrasing), Cristie, prosecutor of terrorists has real time experience on this matter. Again, I find his and Cruz’s position telling.

Looks like Allen West may have changed his views on the Patriot Act at least once.

There is not always something wrong with changing one’s views, though it can be problematic if done for reasons such as political expediency.

Are you 10? Were you alive on September 11, 2001? Do you concede that America is facing a very real sophisticated radical Islam terrorist threat - with cells all through the USA and abroad? What is your take on the Boston Marathon Bomber? And I am the one who doesn’t care about America???

Without commenting one way or the other on the actual issue, this is just another form of debate by bumper sticker.

Not only that but would you want one?

“I believe the same thing I did 10 years ago. No amount of experience or education has changed my mind” is not exactly a good leadership quality…
You do have a point there. It all depends on the reason for the “flip”. Is it out of mere expediency? Or was there a true change of heart? Very hard for a mere mortal to tell.

And while it would be easy to assume all politicians are ambitious and amoral, last I heard, there’s nothing in the Bible or Catechism stating “Politicians are exempt from Christian charity”. Though there is also the passage about not trusting “princes”, not blindly trusting politicians, is not the same as condemning someone just for being involved in politics.

Also, for Trump supporters who state “how is he worse than any other politician”; he very well may not be. The issue is that Trump is essentially claiming that he is BETTER than a “career politician”. If you concede that he’s not, that takes away a major reason to vote for him.

I was an adult in 2001. I saw (in person, I mean, not on TV) the smoke billowing up from the Pentagon, and like millions of others, I cried for hours watching the coverage of New York.

That does not mean that I think it is OK for the government to know the content of my e-mails or phone calls or texts, even if I don’t think there is anything that should interest them in that. It’s not like the government has a right to all information about me unless I can prove they don’t need it. And in fact, we’re not given the opportunity to prove it even if we could.

What if they collect all of this information and later decide that devout Catholics are a danger to the state? Do you know what they’re looking for? Does anyone? Is there any accountability for what they search for? Once they’ve collected it, is there any guarantee that they delete the information that is not related to terrorism? When they’ve indicated that Christians and conservatives and those who are suspicious of centralized federal authority are dangerous, even if they deleted information that they feel is not related to terrorism, they will still have information that I feel is not related to terrorism.

The interesting thing about that episode in the debate is that I found I didn’t agree with either Christie or Paul. In time-sensitive situations, I think law enforcement could have information without waiting for a warrant. However, they should still have to show (at least afterwards) that they had a good reason for collecting all of the information they collected, reasons having to do with suspicious behavior, information received, etc., and also that they had good reason to believe the situation was really time-sensitive. You can’t just say, “It’s OK to spy on everyone, because anyone might be a terrorist.” Or rather, you can say it, but I will certainly argue with you about it, and I will have to think long and hard before voting for anyone who says it. (I won’t think you don’t care about America, just that you’re wrong. 🙂 )

The fact that my life is boring and crime-free (well, maybe except speeding 😊 ) doesn’t mean that I am willing to have my every communication known by the government. Even if I trusted what they would do with it (which I don’t), it is my private life and I deserve, as a human being who has not committed or even contemplated any serious crime, to keep it private. The hundreds of millions of other Americans whom the government has no reason to believe are involved in terrorism deserve it too.

My question was to give a living American politician who has not flip flopped on some issue:
This is why I think character is an important criteria for a candidate. As far as the issues, uncertainty as to the consistency in a candidate is more critical in different areas for different voters. Abortion is a serious concern for me, for example.

And who is paying for this ‘sophisticated’ threat? Do they have bomber fleets, cruise missiles or advanced aircraft? Seriously. And the FBI and CIA are unaware and doing nothing?

And if a President decided to brand those strongly opposed to gay marriage as terrorists and proceed to use the previously gathered information to round them up will it be a good thing the President got all those bad terrorists? The problem with the USA PATRIOT Act is that it gives the government absurd amounts of power that could be used for much more nefarious purposes.
Thank goodness American-loving Trump has said the first ones he’d send back to Mexico are the gangs,

On immigration, many don’t disagree with Trump and on this vital issue, if it means deporting 50 million illegal aliens, I guess that is what has to be done.

Up to 80% of crime in the US is done by gangs.
There aren’t 50 million illegal aliens, not even 20 million. and a bunch of those gangs are ones such as the Bloods and the Crips.

The TSA has been proven ineffective at finding smuggled items. The Boston Marathon Bombing used pressure cooker bombs and the USA PATRIOT Act did not help find them. The point of asymmetrical warfare is that it requires few people and little money and is very difficult to detect unless your Security Apparatus is the Stasi or the NKVD.

I’m 25. Not that it’s any of your business. So yes, I was alive.

Certainly, I disagree with Trump’s ill-advised, rude or course remarks on Fiorina in the Rolling Stone interview. I don’t know if that interview was from weeks ago or what. Trump seemed to be acting somewhat civil at this rally in Washington DC and on Hannity.

Uh, I think this ship has sailed - see Lois Lerner for more info.

The man is an embarrassment.

If Trump becomes the nominee I may, and I say MAY
sit this election out for the first time since 1976. I mean it, too.
Cause I ain’t voting for any of the Democrats, of course.
I don’t know.

He is NOT pro-life he is a progressive.
If the election were held today he would be the nominee.
My only hope is that Carson or some other Republican will shine during the debates and show how much better they are than Trump.
