Quite a few Americans are racist. That’s been our very bitter and sad experience throughout the decades. I don’t know the proportion or percentage (or whether it is the majority or a large minority), but in daily experiences one “rotten apple” racist can spoil the whole barrel. It’s sort of like living with some snipers around – you never know when one might shoot you. It’s a very horrible sin, and also contributes to people’s early death through the stress they experience and the economic harms, if not actual physical attacks.

But one thing I can say is that the working class is no more racist than the elites and educated. In fact there has been some study that shows the less educated who are racist more easily overcome their racism, often just by being exposed to good and decent minorities who break the negative stereotypes, while more educated people who are racist hang on to their racism and are able to justify it in more complex and nuanced ways.

Go figure.

It is very sad that Trump has now made racism more acceptable and okay…giving complex and nuanced ammunition for the racists in our society whoever and wherever they may be.

You seem to have a one-sided view of your fellow Americans. I work in a hospital and come across all kinds of people. Most people I see are very nice and polite and kind. Even when they’re sick or hurting. This includes all races and ethnicities. It’s been my experience that if you treat people well, they are good to you in return. Americans in general are good-hearted people! And I think most just want to have peace and unity. Didn’t you hear Trump’s acceptance speech? He wants to unify the country. We should all be praying for this!
 
I think it’s hillarious that the media as well as people here on the forum told us that Trump supporters would be sore losers and start violent protest riots. Looks like they were on the wrong side of that also!!! Hypocrits

I really do hope you’re right. It just doesn’t jive with the talk and actions that have preceded.

Also I know Trump is a climate change denialist with fossil fuels interests here and abroad. That to me is even a more dire problem than his stoking of racism. It is a huge life issue and may have very tragic consequences for decades, centuries, and millennia to come. This decade is basically our last chance to avert very serious harms on into the future. Of course, where there is life there is hope, so we can always mitigate later…but the harms of tomorrow are being thrust into the pipes today.

It’s like this – in the past a diagnosis of cancer often meant certain death, even if it took years to die. In the early stages people could not perceive the cancer; only medical tests could reveal it. By the time they could perceive it in the later stages it was way to late to cure. Same way climate change – many cannot perceive it today, and it requires experts to tell us about it and explain the long term consequences. I’ve been following the science like a hawk for nearly 30 years, and the consequences and knock-on effects are already killing many people around the world, mainly the poor. However by the time well-off people are able to perceive the problem we will have tipped the system into a non-reversible life-inhospitable climate in which many will die from its effect. It will be like a killer musical-chairs of diminishing life-sustaining resources. It’s not expected to start drastically reducing our food productivity in the US until mid-century, but by that time it will be way to late to stop the spiral into very horrible times for life on earth.

I wish people would be as concerned about this huge life issue as they are about abortion. Killing people by whatever means is not good and needs to be reduced.

I don’t think it’s Trump that did that. We have had agitators stir up racist sentiment for several years now. There seem to be a lot of racists on both sides of the political divide. HRC made quite a few racist comments as did her staff. So I suppose one could say that a Clinton win could have made her brand of racism (and other bigotry) “more acceptable and okay”. The demonstrations over the last two days have certainly shown us that progressives have a low level of tolerance for those they disagree with.
 
Seems like the only way to remain charitable for next next few weeks is to not comment at all! Let’s wait until Trump takes office at least. Both sides need to relearn the art of COMPROMISE!

Another thing that is telling … in one of the pre-election polls, the question was asked “regardless of whom you support, will you accept the outcome of the election?” and while only 69% of the Trump-supporting respondents answered in the affirmative, 86% of the Clinton-supporting respondents said they would.

So, are the rioters comprised of the ~6.68% (Clinton supporters who wouldn’t accept the election outcome) of the population?

More the case that the Clinton supporters were overly confident she would win.Last debate this same question was asked of DT but not of Hillary probably for the same reason.:cool:
