I would like to say something about music…

First I am very much heavy metal. i love bands like Demon hunter, The Showdown, Throwdown, War of Ages, Atreyu, Etc…

Next, Music is one of the only things other then Christ, that is Truly universal. My church, The RCC is not even as universal as music is.(Sorry My fellow Catholics we are not…) Music is the only thing Other then Christ that anyone can listen to and understand what is Going on. FOR instance, pick a Bag pipe and play Sir John Newton’s Amazing Grace and Most everyone on the planet can know what song it is. Play Mortal Kombat theme song and most everyone knows where it is from. Any one who says that music does not effect you is on crack. Music is at the depths of our souls. Music can inspire, it can cause fear, it can sooth, it can put people to sleep, It can cause emotions( Example, Take the scene in the movie Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, the scene were King Thayodin Charges the orc army on the Fields of Planenor and replace the music score with The Showdowns’s Nemesis, It conveys a whole new feeling) I am all for listening to what ever you want, But remember St Paul’s words, What ever is Lovely, pure, Holy, gentle, Think on such things. LIstening to music that is about Ra.pe or Murder, always about Death will effect your soul. i am not saying that you will go out and kill someone or murder someone but it will effect you.

Again I love heavy metal. I recently came on to a band called War of Ages. I would suggest anyone who is looking for a heavy, yet very talented group of young men to look them up. Also Look up the band The Showdown, they have a new cd out called back breaker, it is amazing. Demonhunter is also the Christan Heavy metal Tyrant that paved the way for most other bands…

So a last Quote from a Wise and smart man, st Paul the Apostle, All things are Lawful but not all things are beneficial. let us run this race as if competing for a prize and cast off all that hinders… If you music hinders you in ANY way. Cast it off. If it does not bring you closer to the lord or brings you to a point of seeking him or makes you fall in love with his creation or marvel at the freaking awesome concept of Sound waves…Cast it off. It mocks our God or church, cast it off. Other wise every day you listen to what ever it is that hinders you from the above, you place that object, that music, that finite and perishable “thing” above a infinite and undying being who has paid the full price for our ransom, and you are in Idolitry and every day you take communion with out fixing that draws you away from your First love, and you trade your heart for a lie…

Now here is the crazy thing… This does not apply to just music, this applies to anything, even the church, the bible, food… i mean i know someone who is so wrapped up in his theology, that it has actually become an idol to him and he refuses to see the truth of Christ… he even has allowed the bible, the ink filled rice paper bound book, become an idol, He listens to a book( and i am not downplaying the bible at all) instead of a good and holy God, who inspired and guided men to construct the bible and put the truths of Christ together in a form we has humans would understand. Now I am not saying we cast off church or the bible, but we cast off what is hindering us from understand God in the mass and the his word, like our own understandings, our own piety.

For instance, In my Parish, during the flu season our bishop suspended the right of the Cup. Now I can understand and it hurt that we could not take his blood, but we still had the body and that was better the nothing, in fact it was gift. Then our bishop suspended the right to recive on the tongue, during the flu and Swine flu seasons.People in their own stubborn and selfish ways actually refused to recieve Communion at all. they would not take it on the hand they just did not go up.they Actually had the nerve to refuse Christ in his own house. that is Idolatry. When you refuse Christ that is Idolatry, you can refuse him in any way, with your music, your food, your speech, your actions, the way your dress, the way you act towards people.

So my point is brothers and sisters… Who cares…about how fast or what beat…Who Cares… it aint gonna save you, but if it hinders, get rid of it…

There isn’t much to it. Sarcasm is harder to detect when it it written rather than spoken.
 
Well what about christian heavy metal? I;ve listened to bands with christian generes such as Divinefire, Majestic Vanguard, and a new recent, HB (a Finnish symphonic christian band).
 
I thought this thread had finally died! Oh well, I guess everything ends up resurrected on CAF sooner or later. 😛 Most of the justification for rock music bashing came from the “Bayside Apparitions”, which are disapproved by the Church. And I don’t think the OP has been around for a while, anyway.

We are a Resurrection people. 😉

What really raises red flags for me in regards to the rock bashing are the sources. I keep seeing appeals to the Bayside Apparitions (condemned), Jesus-is-Savior.net (a virulently anti-Catholic site), Jack Chick (anti-Catholic), and other appeals to pseudo-scientific persons or urban legends. It’s tough to take the argument seriously when these are their bedfellows.

Also, oftentimes I will hear people say that Pope Benedict XVI said rock music is satanic. I always ask for a citation, but have yet to receive one when I have asked for it. I’m sure they’re referring to a passage in Ratzinger’s “Spirit of the Liturgy” and taking it way out of context. The fact that I’ve yet to have someone actually give me the citation leads me to believe that they’re just repeating information secondhand (or third or fourthhand). I should look up the passage myself so that I’m able to respond to that point, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. :o

The reason you were shocked is probably because it isn’t true…
Unless you would count being “against organized religion” as “satanist”.
Which, of course, it is in a sense. But i don’t think i would put it so black and white.
 
I think the reason many people get trapped into this kind of world view is that they assume everything has either divine or satanic origins.

What about us?

What if scary heavy metal songs or sexy pop tunes and even mysygonistic raps have no supernatural connections at all?

What if they are created by human beings and therefore just a big sloppy mix of virtues and vices?

In another thread they are talking about violent movies. Same deal. The fact that it is such a grey mix of good and bad suggests that it is all just human to me.

Here is the passage from The Spirit of the Liturgy:
…] there is pop music, which is certainly no longer supported by the people in the ancient sense (populus). It is aimed at the phenomenon of the masses, is industrially produced, and ultimately has to be described as a cult of the banal. “Rock,” on the other hand, is the expression of elemental passions, and at rock festivals it assumes a cultic character, a form of worship, in fact, in opposition to Christian worship. People are, so to speak, released from themselves by the experience of being part of a crowd and by the emotional shock of rhythm, noise, and special lighting effects. However, in the ecstasy of having all their defenses torn down, the participants sink, as it were, beneath the elemental force of the universe. The music of the Holy Spirit’s sober inebriation seems to have little chance when self has become a prison, the mind is a shackle, and breaking out from both appears as a true promise of redemption that can be tasted at least for a few moments.

In my own opinion of what I can tell from that excerpt, I think Ratzinger is painting the issue a bit too black and white. I don’t think a blanket statement like that is justifiable for all cases, especially when rock music is very loosely defined (even seems to include stuff like “Cans and Brahms” by Yes, which is an excerpt from Brahms’ fourth symphony played by overdubbed electric keyboards). And a diferent opinion was expressed by Pope John Paul II, who was a fan of musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bono, and BB King. 😛

Two things, though. First, no where does Ratzinger say that rock music is inherently evil or satanic. Second, Ratzinger is speaking primarily of what can happen at rock concerts. This makes sense when seen in the larger context of his book on the liturgy. Thus he is holding up sort of a secular counter-example to our worship.

I’ve been to such concerts and I can definitely understand what he’s saying. It really does seem like “worship” for many of the attendees. But I think it’s a long leap to go from that to saying that all rock music is inherently satanic and evil.

I think Ratzinger could have also chosen sporting events as a secular counterexample to the liturgy. But that doesn’t mean that football is satanic either. It just means that some people take it way too seriously.
