But it’s called a unicorn because it is the closest resemblance to a unicorn. It has hair and a horn on its head. Just because it’s called a rhino now doesn’t mean the term unicorn that was used then stops being true.

Supposedly this is what it looked like

Haha I’m not sure. I think you can flag your own post and send them a message about it to remove it.

I guess he had to scrap that whole idea of punctuated equilibrium .
No. That is one of the signs of punctuated equilibrium. A small population evolves in a small area to form a new species and then stays the same for a long time while it spreads out over a larger area, like humans or whales/dolphins. Unless you are looking in the right place and at the right time horizon you will not find the transitional fossils.

You appear to need to learn more about evolution if you want to make relevant criticisms of it. Trying to learn about evolution from YEC websites is like trying to learn about Christianity from atheist websites. You will be misinformed.

There are many horned animals on this planet and many extinct animals that had horns too. It is not impossible to think that a horse like creature with a horn may have existed, or even that a horse with a horn existed. Of course they would not have been magical or anything, but if unicorns did exist, and were rare and similar to horses, I could see how myths about them could have started. Also, I can see how myths of them could have started even if they were not real.

However, my personal feeling is that they most likely did exist, even if they were a mutated animal and not a real species.

In regards to dragons and dinosaurs, it is possible that a few dinosaurs (or dinosaur like animals) lived well into the Old Testament era. There are some ancient sculptures that are very good representations of dinosaurs around the world, which makes me believe that some may have survived into human history. OR some cultures had pretty advanced paleontologists in ancient times.

Obviously, dragons were large reptiles (or maybe even scary looking large birds). And obviously they didn’t breath fire and obviously, have been mythologized over the centuries. But it is logical to believe that “dragons” have a base in reality instead of total myth.

Lack of physical evidence of unicorns and dinos (or dino like animals) living with humans does not mean it’s impossible. Everyone used to think the giant squid was a myth until the late 20th century. So it’s possible these animals were real.

HOWEVER, if some dinos did live into Old Testament times, that DOES NOT mean the Earth is only 5000/6000 years old. I would simply means that they is a ton of pre-history that we are unaware of (which most of us know already).

God Bless!

De_Maria:
We have? Which? …
Various islands have examples, such as: Aleixandre et al (2013) Speciation on Oceanic Islands: Rapid Adaptive Divergence vs. Cryptic Speciation in a Guadalupe Island Songbird (Aves: Junco).

IIRC there are other examples among lizards on the Dalmatian islands. Islands are often a way to isolate populations so they cannot physically interbreed, so they can evolve in different directions without exchanging genetic material.

I thought TWF said, “in our lifetime”. The first article says:
We found high mtDNA divergence of the island lineage with respect to both continental J. hyemalis and J. phaeonotus, representing a history of isolation of about 600,000 years.
Is there something I’m missing?

This is genuinely one of the most bizarre debates I’ve ever had on CAF.

Can I ask where unicorns even came into this discussion?

Because Mike from NJ mentioned it.
The word ‘unicorn’ was replaced by rhinoceros in Challoner’s Douay-Rheims translation in 1752. Today’s translations starting from 1800 usually render it wild ox.

It would be weird to have a unicorn (the one that comes to mind) smacked in the middle of lions, donkeys and bulls.

Right, okay, thanks.

So is the argument here that dragons are also real because they are mentioned in the Bible? Or is it not related to the OP?

The same way He held them responsible in the Genesis narrative. Upon receiving the gift of an immortal soul, they communed with God and knew His will.

Just scroll up and you can see where and how unicorns came into the discussion.

Unicorns are in the Bible. They are not even remotely close to magical white stallion unicorns. This is just a name. Unicorns did exist, just not the typical kind. The kind we’re talking about closely resemble what Blessed Anne Emmerich was most likely seeing in her vision.

I know it sounds ridiculous, debating unicorns lol.

Bacteria of some sort or another. You can Google the specifics. Bacteria go through reproductive cycles incredibly quickly so you can observe a thousands of generations in a short time.

IMO, it doesn’t really matter whether evolution is true or not.

I doubt we’ll ever know unless the human race is around long enough to witness and document evolution occuring on a large scale over various species and see how these develop into different species. Maybe that will happen in a few million years.

I don’t really mind either way.

The Siberian unicorn looks nothing at ALL like a rhino. It resembles an equine species. I think that after it went extinct, subsequent humans slimmed down the image of the unicorn in their storytelling to make it prettier. Or maybe they didn’t know what the original unicorn looked like, only that it was equine-like, since they didn’t keep fossil records back then.

If you read the source provided, there is a suggestion that it was a type of rhino. It wouldn’t look like a rhino today, for a multitude of reasons, one being that rhinos today live in Africa and this previous rhino lived in Siberia.

But based on the fossils it looks more equine-like, which would explain how it took on the form of a horse to subsequent generations of people who had never actually seen it but had only heard of it from stories passed down. In this area of the world, these people would have never seen a rhino, so they couldn’t have compared it to one anyway.

I mean intelligent Sapiens who had what Aquinas termed a “sensitive soul”. These are natural souls that, as far as we know, end at death. There has been no definitive doctrine on the state of the sensitive soul after death.

Maybe read some Aquinas on souls? Reading some of the rich Catholic teachings for a bit instead of YEC blogs can’t hurt.

Sacred Scripture is not a Natural History nor a Biology textbook.

Wait, isnt there like a theory out there that dinosaurs died out sometime in earlier biblical times? (if they did exist) just curious ! 🙂

And then of course Eve didn’t even come from Adam… she’s the offspring of animals.
