carol marie, I agree with you completely, & had similar thoughts when I read this stuff. Everthing is very superficial & shallow, & selfishly centered on wealth & happiness. Some of the leaders of this movement came under criticism for saying that survivors of the Holocaust & the World Trade Center must have somehow caused their own suffering by putting out the wrong energy. Yet, the masses seem to be buying it, hook, line & sinker…

Had anyone heard of this “secret” prior to this discussion? I’m afraid we will hear more about it in the future. 1 or 2 people were trying to point out the errors of this philosophy when I looked at the Oprah message boards, but most were “putting out lots of positive vibes”. Now those boards are down for some reason.

I’ve got to sign off until tomorrow, but thanks for all of the (name removed by moderator)ut. I was pretty concerned when I heard about this.

As for me, I think I’ll follow Jesus & not worry too much about energies or the universe. Thankfully, He’s in charge of it all, anyway! I do worry about all of those people led astray, though.

Just this past Saturday, my family and i had an argument. My daughter asked me to look up ‘The Secret’ to see if it was available in our local Coles/Chapters. I refused and told her why as gently as possible. She got really upset with me for refusing to help her, talked to her father and both of them went on an anti-Catholic rant. This i snot new in my household. She is 29 by the way, no child at all.

It seems I am in a constant struggle…😦 and i need a holiday in the Carribean or something!😃 . Anybody want to come. How about the Cruise organized by Catholic Answers. That should do…:bounce: We can learn the faith more with our resident apologists, wouldn’t that be fun! 👍

this is a duplicate thread to the discussion going on re:Oprah. Energy is not God. God created energy as He created everything. God is not a force, an energy field, or a Matrix, He is Trinity and Unity. One God, Three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Secret gives you everything you need to know to evaluate its authenticity: it claims to be a “secret” known only to a few intellectuals, while of course marketing itself to the hoi poloi. God is not a Secret. He reveals Himself continually to His children throughout history, and the culimnation of His Revelation is the Son, Logos, the Word, Jesus Christ. There is no secret. All is revealed, look for Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Light. There is no other “secret” except the meanderings of men’s minds along dark paths.

Thanks for the link to the other thread.
Shoshana, that sounds like a tough situation with your husband & daughter, but I’m sure it’s one that most people with older & adult kids face. My husband is away from the Church right now, too. I did have one thought for you concerning your daughter, though. You’ve probably already thought of it, but I’ll mention it just in case you haven’t. Maybe you could get a copy of the book for each of you, & ask her to discuss it with you, like Oprah’s Book Club… You could discuss it once a week or so, even if it was over the phone. In the meantime, research it as much as you can & continue to gently point out all the problems that she might not recognize. Before you know it, she’ll be hearing your voice in her head & recognizing the problems herself. I would only recommend this since you are so strong in your faith & she sounds like she might read it anyway. Use it as a teachable moment…

What a wonderful advice…just might do that. Thankyou so much for your inspiration…I am sure the Lord is working through you. Last Friday, coming home from work, I listened to Father Corapi…and anyone who knows him know that he is very strong in his convictions…well, he was talking about the Faith and the battle we wage. But this time he was so gentle, I felt the Lord talking to me…he said: I know your struggle, your pain and ever tear drop that is shed is known to God…Well, my eyes were filling with tears. Every tear drop is known to God and collected as it was…wow…so…God bless you mmm1

This looks exactly like Wicca to me, just with a more positive name.
"The concept says that the energy you put into the world—both good and bad—is exactly what comes back to you. "

I really want to thank all of you guys for the informative, insightful posts. I had a very bad feeling when I heard about this. People are talking about opening yourself up to the universe, which could certainly let in evil & cause our brains to fall out… This is about more than positive thinking. The secret claims our future can be without limits if we harness the right energy, but where are these energies coming from? Certainly not from God.

Again, thanks so much for the information & insight.

Wow, Shoshana, that really lifted me up! I would love to think that God is able to work through me, but I’m afraid I don’t give Him much to work with. I returned to the faith for real a few years ago, & usually check out these boards pretty sporadically. When I do, I feel a little intimidated & uninformed. People write such great posts. I hope my small bit of advice helps, you seem like such a nice person. I loved the quote from Fr. Corapi. God IS with you & I know He’ll continue to bless you, too.

You know, I’d rather trust in a God that does know every tear drop than trust in “an energy” or the universe. This practice does upset me, because I can anticipate so many souls being led away from God by it.

For every great thing Oprah does, like the school in Africa and her Angel Network helping New Orleans, she comes back with New Age garbage…kinda like the devil and his M.O, ie, do a bunch of great things and sneak in the one evil. Now please, I aint saying she is evil, but she is clearly duped and being used by the Devil - why would he? She is powerful, wealthy and has media access and is influential.

First its her Couse in Miracles ****, then its sitting in dark rooms and staring at a mirror awaiting visions, now its this…

Shallow? Bella…be careful…are you involved in the occult?
Be careful of what???

I am Catholic, and thankfully not a shallow one like many of those who post here.

But then again, many see Catholicism as being a cult. That is certainly evident with some of the many theads I have read in these forums.

My, you do get plagued for some reason. But I think it is because your eyes have been opened by the Spirit.

I also think Oprah may be covertly used to trap people into following a path that is NOT of God.

She appeals to a massive audience and could be a great tool by an ill intended spirit.

And evidently not as judgemental either.

As Catholics we have the “fullness” of faith. Why would anyone want to look elsewhere? There can be a danger of reading stuff like this and finding it more appealing than what Jesus taught. There are many “feel good books” from a Catholic perspective (sorry can’t think of one off the top of my head) and mixing “secular philosophy that borders on new age” with our beliefs as a Catholic can be a recipe for disaster.

Bella-

Why is Oprah beyond criticism? I ask that in all honesty and I hope I don’t sound flippant. Aren’t we all in danger of being seduced by the evil one without knowing it? I know that is true in my own life. It should be even more ture for someone like Oprah, who has so much more influence over millions of people.

Ouch. 😦 Can’t say I’ve come across “many” shallow posters here but I do run into nasty ones from time to time.

Dare I ask “apparently you can be…” what?
