Jim, as usual, you have completely missed the boat. This cartoon was not referring to the 1960s as you remember them. The proposed springtime of the Church has not been a pleasant one. I studied meteorology for about a year. If you live in Texas (or in the midwest, for that matter), you know that springtime is also the time for severe weather, with an increase in tornadic activity up and down the dustbowl.Does this mean we’ll return to the mindset that existed before the 60’s?
Things like,
Forced segregation.
Blacks can not vote
We accept what the government tells us, even if if means sending our kids off to be killed in needless wars.
All Protestants are going to hell.
Catholics not allowed to visit Protestant churches.
Women must keep their heads covered and their mouths shut.
Obey the priest, even when he’s abusing you,… after all, he’s a man of God.
Nuns can beat children at will.
Uhmm, no thanks.
Although the 60’s had some problems, it was from that time period that we ended up with the freedoms we have today. Freedoms that some of our fellow Americans did not share.
Freedoms that if you had to go without them, you’d be screaming!
Jim
ROTFL!Well, I for one am happy to see the end of the 60’s.
I mean, we started out with that unnecessary war on the Danube with the Rhoxolani in 60; then a full-scale invasion of Britian in 61, where the Icenic queen was killed by Suetonius Paulinus. Then in 62 we ended up with that madman Nero as Emperor–what a disaster that was.
The same year, we had that earthquake in Calabria, and that storm in Portus that destroyed all those ships. Then in 63, we had that disastrous defeat in Armenia. In 64, Rome just about burned to the ground; then the Jews rebelled in 66 and we ended up with that whole mess in Jerusalem and Masada.
68 was probably the worst year yet—we had four Emperors: Galba replaced Nero, followed by Otho, Vitellius, and finally Vespasian, which led to incessant warfare in 69 with all the various factions fighting against each other.
Granted, we had the Olympics in 67, but by and large, who would want to go back to the 60’s?
This is still what the church teaches; those who reject the Catholic Church cannot be saved. The above is what the average Catholic was taught. Of course there was more explanation to this, and of course, because of the times, it was misleading. Yes, Catholics like myself were taught, that protestants, because they knew that the Catholic Church was the true Church established by Jesus Christ, but rejected it, would not be saved.
Jim
Amen! This means that the Jews, Hindus, or Muslims, who reject the Catholic Church, will not be saved.
Jim
…Vatican II wasn’t called to destroy the Church, but to preserve it.
Right, but something unexpected happened didn’t it ? The man who called the Council took ill, and on his deathbed pleaded for the Council to be stopped. He saw what was happening.
I believe if not for Vatican II, the Church would be in bad shape today. ***How is it in better shape ? Because Catholics are not wasting so much of our priests time going to confession ? Because parents don’t have to worry what other parishioners think about their kids wearing football jerseys to Mass ? Because boys don’t want to be Altar Boys anymore, due to to fact that many of them have never seen an Altar Boy in their parish, only Altar Girls, and think that is the way it’s supposed to be ? Because we can now go to Mass on Saturday evening in order to sleep in on Sunday instead of going through the hassle of having to shower and get dressed for Mass ? Or is it because anything goes now, and we don’t have to worry what Rome thinks ? Or perhaps it’s that dreadful silence we used to have to observe so those old fashioned Catholics who knelt in prayer after Mass could express their devotion ?
I’m sorry Jim, I know you probably don’t see any of that as a plus, and certainly didn’t say it, but it’s the reality of the average parish.
And it’s sad.***
Jim
Good deal ! There are indeed many good things happening in the Church today. Why the obsession with the 60’s, anyway?
(Though I must say kudos to Wolseley on an excellently funny point of view!)

Not only She didn’t change it…she simply cannot (and thus will never) change it.This is still what the church teaches; those who reject the Catholic Church cannot be saved.
You will not be able to find a single sentence in the documents of the council which even appears to challenge this. The Second Vatican Council did not change a single article of faith.
Yes, that’s how I feel. It seems that the new generation is already sick with the liberal nonsense! Indeed the new generation seems to be going back.I’ve been reading this thread and find it interesting. Allow me to post the thoughts that led to the the cartoon.
The “End of the 60’s” wasn’t necessarily directed toward everything that happened in the 60’s in a cultural sense, although I believe it was the worst decade in American History. But that’s another issue.
I was highlighting that the influence of that decade on the Church is - thankfully - dying a slow death. I read once that a liberal remarked back in late 60’s that all they needed to do was to wait for the dinosaurs to die off - then they (the liberals) would be in charge. That certainly happened. Now the reverse is true - we are witnessing the “dying off” of the liberals. As more and more ride off into the eternal sunset, the Church re-emerges in all Her splendor.
Thanks be to God for that.
