For my part, I would have preferred Khan to not respond. Trump did not need to insult him, why not just day he disagrees with Khan’s position? Whatever point Trump is trying to make is lost because he can’t rise above it.
Khan called Trump a “fascist” in an op ed, to which Trump responded. Kind of hard not to respond to “fascist” with some force. Did you expect him to just say “I’m not a fascist”. Everybody knows that and it would have sounded weak to say it.
Curiously, Boris Johnson has said equally as unflattering things about Trump, but Trump hasn’t responded with the same kind of response Khan had.
I think the full quote was:
''I think Donald Trump is clearly out of his mind if you think that’s a sensible way to proceed. You clearly can’t ban people going to the United States in that way, or indeed any country.
And what he is doing is playing the game of the terrorists, and those who seek to divide us.
That is exactly the kind of reaction they hope to produce, and I have to say when Donald Trump says there are parts of London that are no go areas, I think he’s betraying a quite stupifying ignorance, that makes him quite frankly unfit to hold the office of President of the United States.
I would invite him to come and see the whole of London, and take him round the city, except that I wouldn’t want to expose Londoners to any unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump.’’
Its entirely possible that perhaps Trump didn’t see it and his lack of response was due to that. But the video of Boris’ comments is being projected onto Big Ben this evening, so perhaps we’ll have a response in the morning.
