Evangelical Question On Prayer

TO ALL ROMAN CATHOLICS,

I’m curious…I am not going to respond at all, but I am simply asking a question just for Roman Catholics in good standing and practicing.

When you pray, who do you DIRECTLY pray to the most often (as in directly speak to them)?

God the Father?
God the Son, Jesus Christ?
God the HS?
Mary, the Blessed Virgin?
St. Joseph?
Another Saint?

And if you’d like to describe HOW you pray, feel free to do so…but please do not include the rosary, the Our Father, or other formula prayers – I am interested only in personal, one-on-one, intimate prayers wherein you are speaking to the individual.

Well Im not yet a catholic, and I dont know many formulaic prayers, so I talk, same as I would to a girlfriend, to God the Father and Mary his Mother and Jesus. Trying to think about who I have talked to most in the past weeks it would be:

1 -God the Father

2 - Mary the Virgin Mother of God

3 - Jesus.

Im not too clued oup on saints but when I am, theyre gonna be hearing from me 😛

Ive just had a thought - unless you knew the conversation and the topics and the desire, that order of chatty conversation probably wont actually make a lot of sense.

I wish I could vote for more than one…my personal prayers are ussually directed at God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit… And I begin those prayers with “Lord” after making the sign of the cross:)

I will also pray to Mary, particularly when the prayer is involving my family, my children, or pro-life intentions… But when I pray through mary, I am praying WITH her, to Christ, God the Son:)
 
I can’t answer that poll correctly bc there is not an option for the Divine Trinity. I believe that, like the sign of the cross, is that God the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are all in one. So I would be praying to them all at one time. I also pray to Mary and I say Novenas through Saints to the Trinity. There are times I say Jesus, or may pray a Sacred Heart of Jesus Novena, or I said God, and sometime Father in my prayers. Jesus is most tangible bc He was human once so it seems that I see his face when praying, sometimes I imagine a great big being of the Holy Spirit.
 
I wanted to give an option for voting for 2 at most, but I was afraid to click a button and maybe accidentally make it so people could vote for all, which would throw off the poll, I think (I’m not very scientific). But this will do. Ashley’s explanation helps.

Blue, if you HAD to pick one, which would it be? Perhaps, maybe your idea of who the prayers are actually going to, or whom you find yourself directly speaking to most often. Try. TY.

The Holy Spirit bc He always was and always will be. I know that he made Himself into three images/forms. It started out with The Lord, as the Holy Spirit. Then he created Himself into a Father, so He could have Jesus, the Son. I mostly think of a big Holy Spirit being anyway when I pray for the most part. I think of Mary too as herself and Jesus of who He is and what He looks like. If I had to choose One though it would be the Holy Spirit.

Couldn’t vote since you didn’t put the Holy Trinity as an option. I pray to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I ask Mary and the saints to pray for me.

I noticed you addressed this to ROMAN Catholics - Did you intentionally make this so Eastern Catholics couldn’t answer your poll?

Who says formulaic prayers can’t be personal, one-on-one, or intimate? :confused: In my experience they can be just as intimate as spontaneous prayer.
 
Interesting! I’d never though about how I pray. I think I learned something!

I generally always start off with the Father. I tend to think in more of a parent/child relationship in prayer.

If I’m praying for other people, intentions, things “outside” of myself, then I tend to pray to Jesus. I also love formal Jesus prayers which invoke imagrey in my mind of some part of His life.

I usually follow Jesus petitions up with asking Mary, Terese, and any other pertinent saints to help pray for that intention as well. I also like to ask “All the holy souls in purgatory to pray for Intention.”

Poor Holy Ghost… apparently I leave him out except for sacraments; that’ the only time I can think of praying to him specifically (aside from the Glory Be).
 
I am going with what most everyone said and say that I am not able to vote because the choices are too limited.

I pray to God.

I guess depending on the situation which person of the Trinity I pray to might change.

I make sure God comes first in my prayer. I usually praise God, thank Him and then ask for His mercy to me and all. In the morning I ask Him to open me up to all of Heaven so they may see me as He sees me so they may pray with me (us) and pray for me (us) so that we can all come closer to Christ.

Since the Trinity is equally God, I try to have a balanced prayer life to the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit because they all have something unique to offer!

Interaction with Heaven is far outweighed on the God side compared to Mary, Angels and Saints. I ask for their assistance in prayer, but I my focus is always on God. If a certain situation arises where I know a certain Saint has gone through that, they will come to mind in prayer. They also give me hope in that situation as being another human being who went through it already for the sake of God!

Basically…prayer becomes very dynamic for me. It can be as simple as “Lord help me”, “Lord love them”, to meditating with the Rosary (which is very personal, by the way), to a long drawn out conversation, etc. If words are not there I might default to a structured prayer, especially when I know I want to just say the right words or have that prayer lead me into more prayer and sometimes from their a cascade of personal prayers might or might not abound.

I am working more on LISTENING. I know I do too much of the talking in my prayer life. It is amazing when one experiences God’s voice through silence!
