If the US Army Chief of Staff calls the Commander of West Point and says, I just met this terrific kid, the kid needs to apply only as a formality. Seriously.

First, Ben Carson was a terrific candidate for the school at any time. Second, he would also have helped the racial balance. Third, Carson was applying to colleges during the Viet-Nam era, when entry into the military was lower than usual.

So I see this whole tempest in a teapot as a canard against a truly admirable person.
But be never applied to West Point as he said he did.

Jim

Jim
No, he never said he applied to West Point.

Pertinent quote from book:
*At the end of my twelfth grade I marched at the head of the Memorial Day parade. I felt so proud, my chest bursting with ribbons and braids of every kind. To make it more wonderful, We had important visitors that day. Two soldiers who had won the Congressional Medal of Honor in Viet Nam were present. More exciting to me, General William Westmoreland (very prominent in the Viet Nam war) attended with an impressive entourage. Afterward, Sgt. Hunt introduced me to General Westmoreland, and I had dinner with him and the Congressional Medal winners. Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point. I didn’t refuse the scholarship outright, but I let them know that a military career wasn’t where I saw myself going.

Carson was the top ROTC student in Detroit.

Some say basically all West Point Cadets are on Scholarships.

In fact, that’s exactly what Carson’s campaign manager said to Politico in an email:
  • Dr. Carson was the top ROTC student in the City of Detroit. In that role he was invited to meet General Westmoreland. He believes it was at a banquet. He can’t remember with specificity their brief conversation but it centered around Dr. Carson’s performance as ROTC City Executive Officer. He was introduced to folks from West Point by his ROTC Supervisors*. They told him they could help him get an appointment based on his grades and performance in ROTC.**
He considered it but in the end did not seek admission.*

Oh, it will hurt him. No question about it. But when you really look at it, he failed to make a proper distinction in a subject regarding which he probably knew little of the details as to how West Point admission works. But, granted, he should have checked it all out before writing about it.

The slightest defect in telling your story can bite your head off, unless you’re a Clinton.
and this is very minor to all the baggage Obama has.
the democrats are hypocrites to make a mountain out of this little molehill. I bet Carson knows there aren’t 57 states in our country!

As Dennis Prager always says,a Republican is running not only against the Dem candidate but the liberal media as well.

He should be discredited.

Its a lie that was too easy to check and being he didn’t know that, shows a deficiency in his not only in character, but also his ability to grasp the political arena he’s playing in.

Jim
Very true.

Although it is highly unlikely that a major political party would nominate someone who has never held elective office. As a result, I never gave Carson much of a chance anyway.

Going up against Hillary who is by nature a serial liar,Carson is a piker. However, maybe the point you were trying to make is Ben Carsen needs to hone his lying skills,to keep pace with Hillary?😉
good point Jeanne. the old double standard - telling lies okay for democrats but not republicans.

and what about Black Lives Matter? not if you are a conservative man or woman according to the democrats! just ask Clarence Thomas and Herman Cain. I knew they would start trying to tear down Carson sooner or later!

I don’t think so. ALL that we will hear is the RETTIP–RETTAP of backtracking little feet. 😉
:rotfl:

It’s begun already. The headline of this thread was not the original headline of the Politico story. The site retracted the word “fabricated” from the original headline. ReTTIP! 😉

Let’s see, Tax Returns? Grade Transcripts?

Remember Harry Reid absolutely saying something unfounded, that Mitt Romney hadn’t paid taxes for 10 years?

There is a big double-standard here.

He never said he applied. In fact, he said he decided NOT to apply. He said he was offered a scholarship. WP says it’ doesn’t offer “scholarships” but it calls them “scholarships” in their recruiting material. 🤷 WP also makes offers (contingent offers) to many high school students, especially high-speed minority prospects, in hopes they will apply. For many students, the application process is highly competitive. For others, an appointment is a virtual lock. As a URM student with high grades and top rank JROTC participation, Ben Carson would have been much more likely in the latter than former category.

If people perceive that Dr Ben Carson is being attacked by the media, that could help him in the polls, but it may depend on how truthful he has been, and whether they believe Dr Ben Carson and his campaign’s side of the story. I’ve seen various conservative outlets hitting back at the Politico piece.
From what I have heard, it sounds like an argument of semantics mixed in with a shocker headline from Politico that’s sure to hook the “low-info” crowd.

I listened to the news tonight on this.

It turns out, no one in the media made it up, Carson wrote it in his book.

Jim
Which “news” outlet does this comment refer to? What exactly did Carson say in his book?

And really, it’s no secret the left is scared to death of a Ben Carson candidacy. In two recent polls, he’s leading Clinton by double-digits in the general election.

Also, where was all this pain-staking vetting when Barack Obama was running in 2008? Why wasn’t the media this tough on Clinton and the Administration over Benghazi?

So Carson has never been an elected politician, good, I can think of other reasons to vote for him as well.

I never thought Carson was going to be nominated, but I didn’t expect him to implode this fast.

Looks like Rubio may move up to 2nd soon. 😃

Well, good, glad you declared victory and judged the situation. 😃

Just heard Ben Carson in thevMark Levine show. You are correct in your remark. As Dr.Carsen said, they can’t find any scandals in his past so they have to create something. He is waiting for them to check with his kndegarten teacher,to see if he ever wet his pants!:Gotta love it!
