Many people including the moderators have asked that politics be kept out of this thread.
 
Everyone, can we please keep this thread on topic. Many people including myself and including the mod for the board have asked several times that politics be kept out of this thread, now we don’t just have politics, we have the gun control debate coming back up. This is not the place for it.

Not according to some people:
It will probably be much different if the bomber ends up being a Muslim and/or a foreigner from the developing world. As we know from our own history, when those kind of individuals break laws in such a high-profile way, America often cites them as both proof that entire demographic groups must be targeted, and that therefore a more systemic response is warranted. At that point, it’s easy to imagine conservatives citing Boston as a reason to block immigration reform defense spending cuts and the Afghan War withdrawal and to further expand surveillance and other encroachments on civil liberties.

It would appear that Salon doesn’t want the person caught if he isn’t a white male and being an anti-government extremist would be a bonus.

This is related to the gun debate since it has to do with terrorism and the debate over what can or can’t stop terrorism. The rules that I’ve seen say that the news section of CAF is the only place where political discussions are allowed.
 
I’m sure there’ll be very cautious in name and identity; nobody wants another Richard Jewell.

As to sanctuary states- those that have stated a policy of ignoring the immigration status of folks in the US. Many cities actually have formal statements declaring themselves to be sanctuaries.

You are right about the courts, do all the rights of a citizen apply to non-citizens? Why is it unconstitutional to ask for ID and act upon it? Is it ok if it is done for everyone vice based on an officer’s suspicions? Courts have ruled both ways.

Lots of cars in my area with Mexican plates, doesn’t bother me because I think, perhaps wrongly, that to be here they must have had to show their ID and have it verified by somebody when they crossed into the US.

Not an easy issue, but it is a reality we have to deal with vice pretending it isn’t a factor. I have no idea whether this will turn out to have been exploited in the Boston incident. Probably not, it’s only been a proven factor in one terrorist plot that I’m aware of- which wasn’t successful. But it is a vulnerablity.

US Attorney just said that no arrest has been made and no one is in custody (per Fox via the Boston Globe).

These are all just unconfirmed reports, same which CNN is reporting with much spin and speculation.
