Fifth Graders Quizzed on Proper Condom Use

My school did mandatory sex-ed classes when I was in fifth grade. We got taught what a condom was, how to use it, what a penis was, what a vagina was, and what happens to them during intercourse. We were warned about how early pregnancies could have irreversible negative effects on our futures, not to mention the very real danger of having to live with a life-threatening disease for the rest of our lives. I’m 18 and haven’t had sex. Being taught sex-ed in fifth grade didn’t make me want to go out and have sex. If anything, it was quite the opposite. I don’t see any harm in this. You must realize that all the religious upbringing in the world isn’t going to make every child not want to have pre-maritial sex. If one day my kid decided that he/she wanted to have sex with his/her boyfriend/girlfriend behind my back, then at least I can take comfort in knowing that because of what they learned in school, the sex will be safe, there will almost certainly not be a teen pregnancy, and my child won’t catch an STD.

Nothing wrong with giving age appropriate info to kids. Since they are starting to have sex at this age, they need the info. Simple as that.

The moral issues are another matter which should be taught at home. I don’t think that kids should end up with diseases because their parents are irresponsible in educating them, if the schools can fill the void. If a parent is doing his or her job, then this is a non-issue. If a parent is derelict, then the kids need this info.
It is an issue for them, because it is mandated. If I’m doing my job as parent in the area of morals, it isn’t the job of the schools to undermine what I teach my child. When the DC schools can prove they know well how to teach what they’re supposed to teach, then perhaps a discussion on what other things could be taught might be in order.

While there may be the occasional precocious child having sex at the age of ten, most of them are still playing with trucks, catching frogs, and making sand castles.

Much better idea than addressing the social and moral issues that are leading 10 year olds to have sex…

Go act immorally – but do it smartly.

And when you are ten, the proper use of a condom involves filling it with water, tying the end and throwing it at girls! 😃

“Thou shalt not commit murder” is a religious law. too. Do you think it should be taken out of the schools as well? 🤷
Schools teach kids so that the kids will grow to functioning members of society. Murder antithetical to being a productive member of society. Therefore, murder ought not to be taught in schools. There is no need to invoke religion to explain this, I would have thought that was obvious.

If the school teaches something other than the facts, you have a right to complain. However, if you feel that facts undermine what you teach your kids, perhaps you ought to re-evaluate what you are teaching them.

Well, if it’s only the facts they need, let’s make sure that every 5th grader gets to see videos of partial birth abortion.

Thanks True Centrist. Exactly.

Very true. In fact, some people I knew in high school that went to one of the Catholic schools had to go to a mandatory abstinence only retreat for a day and left just wanting more sex. I think John Denver said it best, “That which is denied becomes that which is most desired, and that which is hidden becomes that which is most interesting.”

Giving children facts – like what contraceptives are, what they do, and how they’re used – could never possibly “undermine morality.”

Facts are facts, and no one has any reason to fear children knowing facts.

People do, however, have good reason to be concerned about children who grow up sheltered from the basic facts of life – and who develop an unhealthy obsession with the things that are hidden from them and made taboo – out of a misguided desire to preserve a perceived and imagined “innocence.”

Should children be given the facts about how to make bombs and blow up buildings?

Maybe if it were a military academy or a demolitions trade school. However, for most kids, the answer would be no for the same reasons as murder.

Logically, it seems as if it should cause exactly the same damage that doing these same things outside of school would cause - and it’s illegal outside of school because it causes mental trauma, so … 🤷

It just makes sense that the same action should have the same result, whether it’s taking place in the school, or not.

Showing kids pictures and movies of people having sex is illegal outside of school, so it should also be illegal in school - but it’s not. It’s considered “sex education” when it’s in school, and it’s considered a felony when it’s outside of school. 🤷
Do you think Michaelangelo’s David causes mental trauma? How about Titan’s Danae? Obviously not all nudity is the same, and suggesting that it is does not seem like a serious position.

Context matters, when presented in an educational context, non-erotic pictures of genitalia are completely different from someone giving kids a pornographic magazine.

Once again, the school is not where kids should be taught this sort of morality. Yes if you want to fix underlying social issues, that is great, but keep in mind that Christianity has been trying to do this for the past 2,000 years. In the meantime, however, the government is going to institute programs that seem the most effective at reducing teen pregnancy.

Agreed, Christianity is taught in the home and Church. When I was in high school, I remember there were some days where you could get a condom and when I started university, we were all given condoms. Despite this, I’m still fine

At the age of 10? I have yet to see a study by the government that would show that 10 year olds are leading the charge in pregnancy…

I would be willing to bet that I can find a whole lot of studies to speak on the cognitive ability and maturity level of 10 year olds - I have a hard time thinking that quizzing 10 year olds in condom use is a viable method to reduce sex among teens and teen pregnancy…

I have a real concern when someone argues that schools or society have no place to in teaching morality. Especially when the lack of morality is an obvious problem in today’s world.

I am all for educating TEENS at an appropriate age to health concerns and issues. I am also all for teaching them about the repercussions of pre-marital sex. What I am against is subjecting children to age inappropriate information and condoning sexual behavior. Someone can argue they are not condoning it, but whenever you say to a child – “Don’t do it, but if you do…” you are sending some very strong mixed signals. Then we place the condoms in their hands – and hope for the best.

Sex outside of marriage (especially among the very young) contributes to poverty and delinquency, which are also antithetical to society, in addition to religious considerations.
