Where did you get your “Gloom and Doom Predictor”? I don’t want one, just curious.
you might be surprised to learn that’s more or less from the standard wedding vows many people here have said. its kind of a predictor for what the course of life is like. people get old, sick, spouses die, finances crash, aces get cracked, kids marry non-virgins, posters get schooled.
Perhaps you have the numbers for next week’s Lotto? I’ll gladly give you 5%.
I do have them. 18, 5, 24, 48, 88. bet the farm, ed. you can’t lose.

Thanks Ed, I agree, in today’s society virginity is seen as odd or unusual, which annoys me, it seems that the media is really pushing for people to embrace sexual immorality, there are far too many young people who see sex as “harmless fun.”

It’s the exact same reason why same sex marriage is being embraced, because I really question the sexual morality of those who advocate the sexual acts of homosexuality as an encouraged varient of sexuality for society.

how about, instead of obsessing on a virgin, you worry about finding a chaste partner?

If Ed wins the lottery, he’d better give the Catholic Answers their cut!

… But if people can’t be honest about some of the core requirements or things that will be a turnoff, there will be problems.
this is true. you should -]advise /-]warn every woman before you date that you’re only interested in virgins.

I can only imagine how that interview would go.

However, most women, had a choice to loose their virginity. Yes, a few were raped. But rape isn’t so common that there is a van on every street corner with a creeper who is looking for 4 year olds to scoop up.
One in five women has been sexually assaulted or raped. That statistic is for America.
But the point of having a relationship is ultimately to have lifelong happiness with the person you are with, underneath God.
I believe that the point is actually to help each other get to heaven.

I’m not saying that you need to change your standards, but you do seem to have a few misconceptions. :o

if God has forgiven a sin, I’m not the one to keep it on the front burner.

otherwise, we seem to agree.

things in the past like a commercial mentality towards marriage and the Fair Market Value of virginity according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, are likely to poison any future marital relationship. you can’t alter the past, but its entirely possible that (1) the OP’s future ex spouse will forgive him and, (2) the OP will grow out of that mentality enough to give the marriage a chance.
haha, the part I bolded was a good way to put it.

I agree. However I completely understand the OP, especially with where he is coming from, when he see’s a lot of people embracing sexual immorality and people tell him that his standards are too high. I just wish there were more women with high standards.

Shoot for the moon, even if you miss u’ll land among the stars.

And as Jesus said “servants don’t deserve special thanks for doing what they are supposed to do.”

right. we’re supposed to ask for forgiveness for our inevitable sins, I assumed that the OP had done that already.

Of course I am open to the church’s teaching on life. I am pro-life all the way, even in the more controversial cases. A disabled child is not a fair comparison to a non-virgin woman. The child had no choice to be born that way. However, most women, had a choice to loose their virginity. Yes, a few were raped. But rape isn’t so common that there is a van on every street corner with a creeper who is looking for 4 year olds to scoop up. I don’t think non-virgins are the scum of the earth, but they just aren’t for me. Human society, regardless of religion or culture, is hierarchical in nature. It is natural for people to classify themselves and others into different classes. I KNOW that virginity is not an indicator of marital success. Neither is making sure the person has a certain income or is a certain race. I know marrying another virgin could result in a dead marriage. But I will sure as hell take my chances with a woman who held out over a woman who caved in. I know virginity isn’t the same as chastity. Obviously, I will look to see if I’m compatible with the girl and not just go for her on the grounds that she’s a virgin. But the point of having a relationship is ultimately to have lifelong happiness with the person you are with, underneath God. But if people can’t be honest about some of the core requirements or things that will be a turnoff, there will be problems.
Actually, happiness has NOTHING to do with the point of marriage according to the catholic church. NOTHING. If that’s why you want to marry, don’t.

The point of marriage is first and foremost to get your spouse to heaven, the second is to raise children. If you think that a non virgin can’t do that as well as a virgin, then you might want to spend some time seriously considering your belief in your church’s teachings on forgiveness and redemption, as well as read some St. Augustine.

._. I never thought I’d agree with an Atheist on something religious…

That’s my main problem with the church…I don’t know… I don’t know…nevermind…I just don’t…I don’t know…ignore this.

I only see 5. I need one more.

You sir, are a spoil sport. And I’m sure there are virgins out there, but you… alas. I think you’ve issued your fair share of warnings. (Yep. Checking the post quota for warnings, you are one over.)

Oh well,
Ed

So, I get home and sit down to read through some journals I was given earlier today, and I came across a really interesting article in this month’s issue of Gene: Fetal genes in mother’s blood: A novel mechanism for telegony? (sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378111913003302)

Basically, they’ve found evidence for DNA contribution from previous male sexual partners of a female.

Again, forgiveness of sin should not be conflated with acceptance of sin - that is an error (I rarely see this conflation between forgiveness and acceptance anywhere but sexual sins - why is that?). Also, St. Augustine approved of virgin-seeking (Cf. Sermon #42).

you (the generic you) could always beat it out of her, eventually she’ll get the point that she shouldn’t have committed a sin you (generically) can’t deal with.

Oh brother. You haven’t read the Bible much? You know, about the wedding feasts and such? A wife is a gift from God. You’ll have to show me a Papal encyclical that does include the words “if you think you’re gonna be happy if you get married, forget it” or something to that effect.

Peace,
Ed

That works, I can do that. But I would worry about finding a partner who has been chaste for the whole ride, not a person who has become chaste after they finally felt like it.

if you did, do you think you’d meet her standards?

you might have missed a question that I put to you. Mary Magdalene – she doesn’t meet your requirements, although Jesus found included her among His companions. right?

Have you stopped beating your… With logic like that, you are winning no arguments. None.

“you could always beat it out of her” Judge, jury and verbal slicer and dicer. Not nice.
