OldCatholicGuy, thank you for those important facts about how Ebola is transmitted.

Unless there is a vaccine or reliable medical test with immediate results.
  1. Incoming travel bans from certain places (not likely)
Which would entail bans on anyone traveling from west Africa during the past month or months?
  1. Temporary restraint centers for travelers with a high likelihood of having the virus.
And how is “likelihood of having the virus” to be determined? A person, such as the traveler we are discussing, may have no symptoms or reasons to be concerned.

I’m sorry, but your above linked information doesn’t count because a)it’s actually factual and b)doesn’t blame Obama. Please restate your comment so that it results in this being the fault of Obama because he lets illegals into the country. No need to provide actual evidence, just the occasional “well we all know” and “its common knowledge” type statements. Thank you and remember it’s really all Obama’s fault.👍

Likelihood will be difficult to determine, in my estimation… in about a year or less.

At which time, if there is anything left to our country, a very strict foreign travel policy should be implemented for all incoming travelers.

How our country has gotten to this point is beyond me.

Like I said before, my descendants all had to pass through Ellis Island. Some here don’t want to know that most US citizens came legally. I think they are fearful and or ashamed.

From the US Center for Disease Control

CDC has been anticipating and preparing for a case of Ebola in the United States. We have been:
  • Enhancing surveillance and laboratory testing capacity in states to detect cases
  • Developing guidance and tools for health departments to conduct public health investigations
  • Providing recommendations for healthcare infection control and other measures to prevent disease spread
  • Providing guidance for flight crews, Emergency Medical Services units at airports, and Customs and Border Protection officers about reporting ill travelers to CDC
  • Disseminating up-to-date information to the general public, international travelers, and public health partners
The data health officials have seen in the past few decades since Ebola was discovered indicate that it is not spread through casual contact or through the air. Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to objects such as needles that have been contaminated. The illness has an average 8-10 day incubation period (although it ranges from 2 to 21 days); CDC recommends monitoring exposed people for symptoms a complete 21 days. People are not contagious after exposure unless they develop symptoms.

More information is available at www.cdc.gov/ebola.

I’m not sure what you keep digging at. Please stop.
I keep digging at you making a claim- " am really surprised that Rob is being attacked over and over here by a number of users.

I believe what Rob means is that collectively, our country is way to loose at the borders.

Border controls are necessary to protect not just interests within but also out.

This incidence of a person coming from Western Africa without necessary controls in place to protect the safety of those within is the most recent pinnacle of a long series of neglect.

Tomorrow, the trouble related to loose border control might be something altogether different.

The front door to the White House was left unlocked."

about loose borders and border control and then can’t actually provide factual evidence that this individual was able to get into the country due to loose borders/faulty border control, let alone evidence that this is somehow linked to the administration.

You’ve claimed that the “the necessary controls” weren’t in place, and attribute this to the current administration (“is the most recent pinnacle of a long series of neglect.”) You should be able to support this claim with something more than partisan rhetoric and “it’s common knowledge” assumptions.

There is nothing fancy about it. Legal immigration after passing certain checkpoints for health etc.

Winging it and breaking the law seems to be the thrust these days.

I was studying Medical Laboratory Technology in the 1980s, when we were first learning about AIDS, and I remember we had a panic similar to now.

We were taking all kinds of precautions that later turned out to be unnecessary. At least with the Ebola, we know how it’s transmitted. With AIDS, initially, we weren’t sure.

Ebola is fairly hard to transmit. It’s not like, say, the flu, that is transmitted even through the air, with just a sneeze, so easy to catch.

I think we’re overreacting, again. At that time, we had some who thought we would die! Some freaked out. We don’t need a panic.

Where your family comes from and how they got here doesn’t actually matter. It has zero impact on this discussion. What matters is your continued refusal to provide supporting evidence that this individual in question got into the US due to a failure in our border control/screening process and that this is due to changes made by the current administration. To date your only evidence seems to be the fact that this individual (who we don’t even know the gender of, let alone their citizenship status) is in the US. “Winging it and breaking the law” isn’t the thrust these days, thinking one doesn’t need to actually present a well supported argument and that political rhetoric and gross generalizations are better than facts seems to be the thrust these days.

You know, I just knew it would happen eventually. I suspect bad times are ahead for America if they cannot contain this virus. One would hope that all people coming to America via plane/car/foot are checked out medically just like immigrants were at Ellis Island… Might go a long way to prevent a disaster from occurring.

At this stage pointing fingers at Washington/CDC is not going to stop the spread of the virus, so I hope that all energies are focused on stopping this and not on assigning guilt.

GOOD GREIF, please stop harassing the poor girl!

This President should be taking effective steps to stop the importation of a deadly disease with a 55% mortality rate, dude, and this is not about partisan politics it is about the federal government being run by people with too much money in their pocket from international corporations that use illegal labor. They wont close the borders till they can sort out what to do because that might huirt too many campaign contributers quarterly profits!

CLOSE THE BORDERS AND QUARRANTINE ANYONE WHO HAD CONTACT WITH THE GUY is the obvious choice here, but only the POTUS can do that.

And he wont unless Yellin says he can.

Dude, you’re 100% right its not about partisan politics. Its not partisan at all to blame Obama for this individual being in the US due to his administration’s actions prior to even know if the individual being treated with Ebola-
-is a male or female
-a citizen of the US or not
-how this individual was screened
-and if this screening is adequate

Nope, not partisan at all.

CDC doesn’t have the same fact sheet as DC, I can’t only assume why.

The CDC states…
Because the natural reservoir host of Ebola viruses has not yet been identified, the manner in which the virus first appears in a human at the start of an outbreak is unknown. However, researchers believe that the first patient becomes infected through contact with an infected animal.
There are “no” facts in that paragraph. 🤷 You have no facts how the virus is spread. none, you have an educated guess, better know as theory.

All of that is panic control lies of omission. There is some grounds for believing that Ebola can mutate into an airborne form and did in 2010. Also they say the virus cannot be transferred in human food but that is only because the disease is not widespread here like in Africa. Pigs, bats and a few other animals have been shown to be able to carry the disease and transfer it to a victims through ingestion.

Here are the facts from the Canadian health services and they have no pro- open borders groups there shutting down debate with half baked ‘facts’ and pure bluster.

Obviously our top of the line hospitals are handling the virus appropriately, much like MRSA is handled well there, but the third tier hospitals and clinics will not do so well and there record of MRSA proves it.

From another thread on this topic:
I thought I would share some of the articles I have collected about this current Ebola outbreak. IF it can save a single life of a brother or sister in Christ then Praise God.

This is the Ebola fact/data sheet provided by the Canadian government and it has some interesting facts.
phac-aspc.gc.ca/lab-bio/res/psds-ftss/ebola-eng.php
Early signs of infection are non-specific and flu-like, and may include sudden onset of fever, asthenia, diarrhea, headache, myalgia, arthralgia, vomiting, and abdominal pains Footnote 13. Less common early symptoms include conjunctival injection, sore throat, rashes, and bleeding. …
Fatality rates range between 50 - 100%, with most dying of hypovolemic shock and multisystem organ failure …
So Ebola first seems like the flu, and while a person shows symptoms they are contagious. Many people appear to get the disease from others who are in this phase of what seems to be basically a flu.

Ebola can live in the listed animals, to include dogs. Whether it can jump to humans is affirmed if humans eat the host in the case of the fruit bats, but nothing proven otherwise. Still, ingesting the virus does seem to be another vector for getting Ebola and if a dog carrying the disease got into food, it would seem plausible that the disease could be picked up from the contaminated food.
HOST RANGE: Humans, various monkey species, chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, and duikers are natural animal hosts for ebolavirus Footnote 1 Footnote 2 Footnote 5 Footnote 22 Footnote 23 Footnote 24 Footnote 25 Footnote 26 Footnote 27 Footnote 28 Footnote 29 Footnote 30 Footnote 31. Serological evidence of immunity markers to ebolavirus in serum collected from domesticated dogs suggests asymptomatic infection is plausible, likely following exposure to infected humans or animal carrion Footnote 32 Footnote 33. The Ebolavirus genome was discovered in two species of rodents and one species of shrew living in forest border areas, raising the possibility that these animals may be intermediary hosts Footnote 34. Experimental studies of the virus have been done using mouse, pig, guinea pig, and hamster models, suggesting wild-type ebolavirus has limited pathogenicity in these models …
MODE OF TRANSMISSION: In an outbreak, it is hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected as a result of contact with an infected animal Footnote 22. Person-to-person transmission occurs via close personal contact with an infected individual or their body fluids during the late stages of infection or after death Footnote 1 Footnote 2 Footnote 22 Footnote 42. Nosocomial infections can occur through contact with infected body fluids for example due to the reuse of unsterilized syringes, needles, or other medical equipment contaminated with these fluids Footnote 1 Footnote 2. Humans may be infected by handling sick or dead non-human primates and are also at risk when handling the bodies of deceased humans in preparation for funerals Footnote 2 Footnote 10 Footnote 43.
In laboratory settings, ***non-human primates exposed to aerosolized ***ebolavirus from pigs have become infected, however, airborne transmission has not been demonstrated between non-human primates Footnote 1 Footnote 10 Footnote 15 Footnote 44 Footnote 45. Viral shedding has been observed in nasopharyngeal secretions and rectal swabs of pigs following experimental inoculation
OK, so Ebola can be spread airborne, but only proven so far to spread from pigs to monkeys that way. No proof it can spread between humans or apes.

Ebola is also transmitted sexually up to 7 weeks after it is cleared from the rest of the body.
COMMUNICABILITY: Communicable as long as blood, body fluids or organs, contain the virus. Ebolavirus has been isolated from semen 61 to 82 days after the onset of illness, and transmission through semen has occurred 7 weeks after clinical recovery
Sweat is a body fluid folks and the virus has been proven to live in clothe like bandages etc but it can also live in the clothe bus seats or other surfaces.

Only in laboratory settings, I think. I don’t know of any natural cases of it doing so.

Several days is not enough.

Anyone that has read the nature of this illness knows this. Also, we know too that this victim did seek medical help. Red flags should have been raised! Instead he was sent home for a few days before the virus was p(name removed by moderator)ointed.

A ‘several day’ watch is not enough. Who can tell which traveler has recovered from the disease and remains contagious? The time of contagion is several WEEKS after recovery.
The incubation period is from 2 to 21 days. If we force a quarantine from West Africa, or any hotspot, that should slow things down. It will also all but kill travel to such destinations. But they won’t do that until it is too late.

I think this is the most devastating headline sine 911.

Your not contagious during the incubation period. Not sure we want to lock people up during that time. If they have had contact with an infectious person, and have a fever, then isolate them.
